I tend to write reviews of restaurants I like. This is no exception. Love this diner. Is it hip and a gastro experience? NO-it's a diner. Breakfast all day and many choices for lunch and dinner. The club sandwiches are fabulous and I've never had a bad experience. The waitstaff are bend over backwards to get you what you want . The old jukeboxes no longer work-what a blessing!! Hahaha. We have moved to New Hampshire and have been to 4 different breakfast and have found the Agawam Diner is so much better. We have been spoiled and so we are willing to drive the 40 minutes on the weekends for there breakfast. No one makes hash as good and there pies are crazy. read more

This is not an upscale dining experience, and no, this is not your average chain restaurant experience either. This is an old diner, as old as they come, and that's what you'll get when you go. Their menu is pretty simple, and growing up I used to grab 2 hot dogs and a side of fries as a dinner. Now that I'm a bit older I grab a turkey club with fries. If you're a frequent visitor the waitress will remember your name and face and you'll get treated like family. New comer? They'll still treat you like family, maybe a cousin instead. No matter what you do, you need to grab a slice of banana cream pie. Sometimes they run out because people will and DO buy full pies when they go. Its not overly sweet, it has great flavor and texture without being overwhelming. They also give you a huge slice. I love a good diner. This isn't one. It is a over priced tourist trap of a "old timey" diner. The food is passable, but there is no reason lunch for three people should cost $80 at a diner. The service was slow and the waitstaff acted as if they had better things to do with their time. Now please let me be clear. The food was tasty, but i have had better at a chain. OH! Love their fried chicken sandwich, and I think they have the best fries around! You can't go wrong with the classic cheeseburger and french fry, and all of their desserts are top notch! (baked on premises) I was once sitting at the counter when a guy came in from NH, and bought 6 chocolate eclairs. After he left I asked the waitress what was up with him buying the six eclairs, she said he comes down from New Hampshire, driving quite a distance, just for the chocolate eclairs. I have been coming to the Agawam since I was old enough to drive. The ambiance is that of an authentic 50s diner. This is not a fancy new diner dressed up to look authentic, this is the real deal.The place is actually listed as a historical landmark. Cash is king here, no credit cards accepted Everything is priced very reasonably though. The specials are always awesome. The food is great American comfort food from grilled cheese and tomato soup to meatloaf and mashed. save room for the pie though!! For me it's all about the pie. Staying with good friends in New England, I roll out of bed on a dreary Monday morning. Despite the threatening skies, I'm feeling good; just a few hours earlier I was at Gillette Stadium watching the Pats lay a smackdown on the Packers. Joining my friend in taking care of his honey-do list for the day, we decide that recharging our batteries is at the top of the list. Something hot and filling, and greasier than Jermaine Jackson's jheri-curl is the order of the day. When it's 20 degrees out, you need all the calories you can pack into a single sitting. With those criteria in mind, my friend suggests Agawam. Agawam Diner is one of those places that you'd literally miss if you blinked, owing to the fact it's basically an old streetcar someone turned into a diner. Definitely cozy, since I had to suck in my gut and hunch my shoulders a bit to squeeze into the tiny booth tucked in one corner; the heavy meal I was about to gorge wasn't going to make getting out any easier. The menu is typical homestyle diner fare...burgers, fries, chili, omelets, and what have you. I'm feeling breakfast, and for some reason, an omelet. While I normally don't go for eggs, something drew me to the corned beef hash omelet, with cheese. After placing the order, and waiting a few minutes for the feeling to return to my lower extremities...yeah, I was wedged into that little booth tight...the food arrives. The omelet doesn't look that inspiring, just your typical beaten egg folded over a filling. But when that filling is a thick, hearty helping of hot corned beef hash, something happens. The sun shines a little brighter, birds sing a little louder. I love corned beef hash, and Agawam's is pretty tasty. Even the slice of white American cheese folded inside, which I'd otherwise consider an affront to fromage, didn't feel out of place. It added a cheesy, gooey goodness that works well with the beefy hash. About the only thing that wasn't working for me were the home fries that came on the side, which were kinda bland and a bit too crisp on some parts. But the chocolate cream pie I had for dessert - yeah, you can have dessert for breakfast - made me forgive that. Creamy chocolate, real whipped cream, and a flaky crust gives one amnesia in regards to lackluster spuds. While it's cramped, and not fancy by any stretch of the imagination, Agawam is one of those old-time spots you can't help but love. Serving up hearty food for good prices, it's just the thing to fuel you up for one of those cold New England winter days. read more

IF the breakfast was better Agawam you would get 5 stars forever. Come for Lunch, dinner and dessert but SKIP the breakfast! Cheeseburger, double cheeseburger or cheeseburger club = diner cheeseburgers are to die for! Turkey club, chicken salad sandwich or a BLT are my second choice! Oh and the pie, you cannot forget the pie especially when they sit in those clear cases and watch you during your entire meal. The number one? Banana cream. This is a classic diner, the service quick and on the run- you don't even need a menu you should be able to guess whats on there! I am not sure why there are always such long lines here. I went there this morning for the first time with my toddler since our favorite, the bagel bin, was closed. We waited for 20 minutes for a seat outside in the rain and then our food was definitely not good when we finally got it. A veggie omelette- the only choice for cheese is American and feta. It was basically a blob of American cheese (which we don't eat since it's really processed but I didn't know if my 1 YO would eat feta), with canned mushrooms and soggy peppers. And a blueberry pancake that was just not good at all-very dry. They also don't take credit cards so you have to wait in line to pay at the register if you want change. It's also very cramped. But a cute atmosphere as far as a traditional diner. read more

Food not-too-good, staff (server & cashier) are not too interactive, despite my "pleasant" attempts (might be a Massachusetts thing?) ... Food Report: My grilled pork chops were dry & grizzle-ly, the apple sauce was more water than apple, and the gravy delivered on-the-side was thick n' "cold". The string beans weren't too bad though (but could have been warmer) ... Of the 4 "vintage" diners I visited in last 4 days for "DUSA Tour 2016", the "Agawam Diner" would be my 4th favorite ... basically only had "vintage" & "along US Route 40" goin' fir it! Was here for breakfast with a friend of long-standing. Oh, Agawam, Agawam, Agawam what have you done? I think they toast the english muffins and then put them on the roof. They were stone cold! Eggs and bacon were fine, I guess. The coffee is as weak as can be. It is cramped in that joint. Lotsa locals, it seems. Our waitress could not be bothered with us. Granted, when I go out to eat I certainly never expect to put the waitress or waiter in my will, but a little personality would have helped her. I've seen livelier headstones. We waited an eternity for our bill, even though the waitress said "be right back with it" 20 minutes earlier. I said to my friend upon leaving, that they should call this place the AGONY diner. Everything you would hope for, and expect from, a small town diner! The food and service were spectacular!

Me and my family are big fans of the show Supernatural, and often look for old style Diners to stop by, and we one day we came across Agawam Diner and had to stop immediately. I've been to other "Diner Style" Restaurants, where they kept the Diner Cart shell and built an entire restaurant behind it, but to my delight Agawan Diner was the actual fully functional and original deal and as the brochure will tell you, manufactured in 1954. That by itself would warrant the 5 star rating, but Agawan proved to be more than a Sam and Dan worthy establishment. In honor of our fictional heroes, we all ordered the cheeseburgers and pie and it was delicious, the burgers are so good that eating juts one is the main problem. The pie would make Dean forget about his problems for the entire time he's eating it, and the coffee was fantastic. We went back several times after, and every time is the same. Great food, great service, polite servers and welcoming environment. Dont forget to bring cash, as I found out the hard way most of the old school diners do not take credit cards. This place not only has amazing prices but their food is also AMAZING. I ordered the fish sandwich with fries and coleslaw and the sandwich was HUGE. it had two pieces of fresh fish in the sandwich. Along with amazing food, the service there is impeccable. Elaine was very attentive, personable, and understanding. I encountered a personal issue while dining there and Elaine and the other waitress were very understanding and accommodating to the matter. 12/10 experience for service and food! highly recommend! read more

Breakfasts have always been fantastic here. The staff friendly and attentive. Today I decided to try lunch. A huge disappointment that started the moment we entered the diner. It was not very busy. No one acknowledged us. We sat ourselves and waited. There was another table waiting for menus. 3 customers came in and had their orders taken at the counter immediately. We asked an employee who was cutting a piece of pie if there were servers working in this section and she said that she would get to us. She gave the other table menus and took their drink orders. She eventually brought us menus. It felt like she didn't want to take our orders. We should have left then, but I work in the service industry and know how exhausting it can be especially during the pandemic. We ordered. My order was incorrect, but I was afraid to complain. The server never followed up post delivery. We wanted a beverage refill and couldn't get our server's attention. The other server was hovering over a pie. We tried to get her attention by saying excuse me 3 times. She walked away. Another party arrived and our server immediately arrived to take orders. My husband turned around and waved his hand in the hopes of getting her attention. She flipped out. The other server brought the refill and waived her hand inches away from my husband's face. She Spun around and told the other sever what she had done and how awful we were. So my husband said to me I guess we are done and we won't be back. The server yelled fine with me. I couldn't believe what I was seeing and hearing. So we paid our bill before leaving. I was really horrified and couldn't leave fast enough. I will miss those fantastic breakfasts. read more

I haven't been to the Agawam Diner in probably 18 years. My dad always took me when I was home sick from school as a kid. I was in the area and decided to see if it held up to memory, turns out it's even better. Everything was good, I got the chicken pie special and my bf got a pastrami sandwich. Our waitress did not wear her mask the entire time we were there, other waitress working was putting mask up and down and when it was on it was below her nose. Tables close together with only some glass shields between tables. Tables sometimes being sanitized between customers, menus were not sanitized at all between customers. Room was packed. I usually love this place but with such a large elderly customer base they don't seem to be taking covid precautions seriously enough. read more

I typical gravitate towards these old trailer diners, and I was optimistic going in. The place reminds of so many of the old diners I would frequent in NY/NJ and out in the Southwest along the highways. The only good thing I can say about it is that it is clean and well maintained. Started off by being "greeted" by a salty old crank who seemed as though she was being bothered to be there, not sure who pissed in her corn flakes that morning but shake it off when you are serving customers. Bad attitude. Food was awful. My omelet was dry and there was way too much cheese in it, home fries were all dried out and crispy, coffee was blah, and the milkshake my daughter ordered was not thick at all, like frothy chocolate milk but almost warm. Not sure what all the hub bub is about this place...I'll say its edible and if I had a hangover and there wasn't a line I might hit this place up again but there really is nothing special about this place. The people are friendly and the food isn't overpriced but this place would rank towards the bottom of the diners I've been to. That makes this place all the more disappointing because the Yelp reviews made this sem like a killer place you would see on Diner's, Drive-In's and Dives...this place feel waaayy short of that. "What is this, an omelet for ants!?" Warning: I am about to rip this place a new one. If you are ever traveling north on Route 1, chances are you could get shipwrecked, like a dingy in a storm, and end up inside the belly of the whale, the Agawam diner. From the 1950's look inside and out, one can tell that this is not your typical diner. Your typical diner of course consists of good service, friendly people, and decent food for a ass cheap price. So in that regard, Agawam is not your typical diner. The service would be good if were a caged animal or a prisoner in Tibet. The first wrong move they made was mixing up coke for water and then pulling a Houdini for fifteen minutes. I still don't understand which dimensional vortex I had landed in where water meant, "bring on the diabetes and charge me three dollars for it." However, the cardinal sins were committed with the food. I had the veggie omelet with cheese, wheat toast, and home fries. By dining mate got French toast with a side of bacon (doesn't that make you think of the POV commercial where you are looking down a dog's snout for beggin' strips?). The omelet was the worst processed crap....ever. It was obvi frozen and the portion was no bigger than my hand. The food was great if you happen to be a hostage. If I were blind, I would guess my home fries were charcoal. But when covered in ketchup they magically transformed into ketchup saturated charcoal. The best part of the meal was the toast that I could have made at home with the assistance of a toddler. The bacon was odorless and tasteless, comparable to carbon monoxide. The only beacon of light in this shit storm was the french toast which was warm, soft, and full of flavor. I like to think of this toast as a Dementor that sucked the life out of everything in the room. Then the check came. I would only recommend this place if you are a dog that likes chewing on rocks or if you are depressed and hope to remain in that state. I do, however, know one place worse than the Agawam diner and that is the Haverhill soup kitched. However, that food is free. But after eating at Agawam, gruel doesn't sound so bad. The Agawam Diner is proof that time travel is possible. I was in the area at lunchtime with an hour to kill and this seemed like a good place to visit. I had a cheeseburger special & it was exactly what a thin and apparently preformed beef patty on a very seasoned griddle is supposed to taste like. The fries were good too and everything was so fresh I had to wait for it to cool down before I could eat it. This isn't gourmet food, it's classic diner fare in a setting which seems like it's right out of the 50's. The Agawam Diner is full of locals that all seem to know each other and the waitresses knew what all the regular customers were having before they sat down. And the guy working the cash register is really funny. I wish they had onion rings but it's a slippery slope. Keep going and it won't be long before they're serving sushi and empanadas. Okay, maybe not, but I would have loved some onion rings and they've got a good deep fryer. Prices weren't bad but you won't forget that you're in the 21st Century. It's open until 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and open till 10 p.m. on weekdays, i haven't found any diners on the north shore as of yet that is open past 3 p.m. I ordered the "Franks and Potato Salad" dish which came out looking delicious and to my benefit lived up to it. Two beef franks grilled with a full plate of yummy potato salad and coleslaw (both were exceptionally good, just enough dressing and seasoning) and last it was served with two hot standard dinner rolls with butter. it was $7.25 and well worth it! As my husband and I sat at the counter we watched the waitresses bring out several freshly baked pies and cakes, all looking equally phenomenal. I heard someone order the Pineapple Cheesecake and I knew I had to try it...the crust was amazing, light buttery flaky heaven...I wish I could have tried all of them, they had Brumbleberry Pie, Chocolate Mousse Pie, Blueberry Cheesecake, Chocolate Cheesecake, Oreo Cheesecake, Apple Pie, Banana Creme Pie and on and on and on! The Agawam Diner was the only motivation that got me out of bed early in high school. I had high expectations when I stopped at the A-D for the first time in almost 10 years and it did not disappoint. The chicken pie (think upside down chicken pot pie with no crust over the top) is phenomenal. When I think 'comfort food' this is exactly what I have in mind. Quick & friendly service, generous portions, and great prices. Two meals and 2 fountain drinks came to $24, including 20% tip - how can you beat that? My only regret is not trying one of the desserts that filled the display case behind the counter. The Boston cream pie practically had me drooling, but I was stuffed after our meal. Guess I'll just need to visit again! The A-D is a traditional lunch wagon diner. If you're looking for a spacious, renovated restaurant with gourmet cuisine and a quiet environment, this is not the spot for you.
