It wasn't their books though, I actually couldn't believe my eyes when I saw them selling a Tomb Raider game just above their books which I once owned. Well not actually mine but I have an identical at home dating back to 1998 (if I can recall). It was my favourite PC game back then and it brought back many memories. I must have bought it for about £30 but now you can buy this for £1.99 at Red Cross (second hand); out of fashion obviously but I'd treat it as an antique if anyone would buy it! It just shows that you never know what to expect at charity shops so it always makes an interesting browse in addition to the clothes they have. And don't forget other items such as little glass ornaments and china; they have a cute collection here too.

A non commercial charity shop that hasn't started charging ridiculous prices for its stock!…read moreMuch unlike the highly overprices Oxfam's and Banardo's that plague the high streets, animal rescue is a very reasonably priced, honest, friendly charity shop. The shop is pretty big in terms of standard sized charity shops, and they have a wide range of stock inside. This ranges from women's and men's clothes, to books, CD's, DVD's, computer games, board games, ornaments, vinyl, cassettes and other random bits and bobs. All the VHS videos are 50p each and they seem to get loads of them in. It's pretty cool routing through them all because there are some that never made it to DVD and they're worth a watch if you still have a VHS machine. These include old music videos which may be a gem for an avid music collector!

This is an excellent independent charity shop situated on Aigburth Road. It is a large shop and is…read morefilled with all sorts of bits and pieces you wont find elsewhere. It has an excellent range of stock including men, women and children's clothing. They have a large selection of books of all types. I like the selection of board games where you can pick up an old game for next to nothing and be a bit nostalgic with your friends. Other items include ornaments, toys, jewellery, records, tapes, Cd's and textiles. Everything here is very cheap. You won't pay more than £1 for most items, and if something is more its usually a good as new piece of clothing. The staff here are lovely and happy to leave you to mooch around for as long as you like.

These two charities were previously known as 'Age Concern' and 'Help the Aged' This shop has been here for years! They have one entrance on Telegraph Road, and the other inside Heswall Bus Station. Somehow I would always find myself wandering in if I had missed a bus. There're all sorts of bits and bobs in here. Loads of books and DVD's, video games, clothes and children's toys. As far as Heswall's charity shops go, this one and the Banardo's around the corner are well priced. With the Heswall Oxfam selling at extortionate prices, even if they are a charity shop! Age UK is fighting a good cause, not just for the respect and wellbeing for the elderly, but to provide for them when they have nobody else. I can't imagine how lonely some of them must be, so I try and buy a little something from here whenever I pass through!

This charity shop has recently had a makeover which I can see the reason for but I do feel it a…read moreshame. With the makeover prices have jumped. £6.99 for a Primark dress with yellowed armpits? I hardly think so! Previously the prices had been middle of the road for a charity shop and there was a lot more stock on the shop floor. It is all a bit sparse now and seems to concentrate on new stock. There are some gems still in the shop if you pop in on a regular basis and the staff are lovely. It is just a shame that some charity shops put customers off by trying to make the shop more and more like a boutique.

The only problem I have with…read morecharity shops is that some of them are like this particular War on Want--that is to say, they are wanting. This was a bit of a disappointment. There was only a small range of stock (though I know that's not entirely the fault of the shop as people need to donate!), and most of what I saw did not look that nice. I wish that more charity shops would stock OLD used books (not just recently discarded best sellers, or trashy romance.) They don't have to be first editions or even remotely valuable--they are just prettier, and sometimes mean we poor people can finally get hold of some of those out of print treasures we've been dying to find. Even so, much of the fault lies with those who donate. You need to donate to charity shops. They need good stock. And you need to donate high quality items that you would actually expect someone to buy!

However, they did have quite a few nice jeans and I was able to find a really great pair for £3. I was very pleased. :) So you never know what you might find if you take the time to poke around.

Oxfam is the only charity shop in the Lark Lane area so I thought I'd check it out. The shop is…read morequite small and narrow but is crammed with lots of goodies. At the back there is a big section of books, DVDs, videos, Cd's and ornament. In the past I have found a couple of rarities and hidden treasures in this section. At the front is the usual clothes section divided into men's and women's items and clothes. The staff work hard (and obviously for nothing) to keep the items organised into size and style so that you can easily find what you are looking for. I have never bought an item of clothing from the shop, but that has been due to not being in the right place at the right time as it would be with other charity shops.
