It also has fun Christmas decorations to enjoy, with lit up ornaments so huge you can walk around in them! They rent ice skates on site if you don't have any and they also have a "Snack Shack". The village is run by local volunteers which I thought was really cool - the ice rink was full of kids and families having such a great time - Their website even has an ice rink webcam haha! It's free to enter in general but there's a charge for the skating. Prices are very reasonable and include the skate rental - and a ticket lasts you all day with in and out privileges. There's also a discount if you have your own skates. The volunteers provide "safety monitors" on the ice and there are benches/bleachers on the sidelines for family/audience viewing. We didn't skate but had fun watching briefly and walking around all the decorations. Parking seems to be all street parking in the surrounding area with time limits so be sure to read the signs. There are lots of cute shops and restaurants in the surrounding area so it makes for a fun outing!

SHOUT IT OUT for Yelper Kris R of Quilcene, WA and Santa Cruz, CA as he constructed the offical Rhody-Run website. The folks who organize this event are amazing. They even care for sixty-five year old walkers who complete the course in just over two hours. I ought to know. That would be my category. Sunday, May 11th was a beautiful Port Townsend day. Not terribly hot, not terribly cold. And absolutely no rain. Well...maybe just a sprinkle or two. We gathered on the parade grounds of Fort Worden for this annual 7.46 mile event. Almost three thousand eager beavers of all shapes, sizes and ages headed toward the starting line as the race began. Some of us (and that would include me) started in the middle group, knowing that the world-class runners would *not* like to trip over our corpulent little bodies as they streaked out over the timing pads placed across the track. Others jogged along with strollers, a few wore casts, bandaids or splints. A couple of folks had canes. Volunteers, ambulances, park rangers and the Port Townsend police were all available to ease our journey toward the finish line. Residents along the route held out cups of water, lemonade and water hoses to sprinkle over heated runners. All were cheering. Along Cook Avenue, the crowd grew thinner and more spread out. The first runners had already finished. Young runners jogged back along the route wearing their newly acquired "winners" t-shirts. Great whoops and hollers from the crowd greeted these folk as they rejoined slower members of their familes to complete the run for a second time. One neighbor poured champagne for those enough old enough to drink, but determined enough to reach the finish line. Kinectic Kops circled up and down the lanes to urge the runners onward. For some, the goal was the t-shirt. For others, the goal was the free beer poured at the finish line by the Port Townsend Brewery. By the time I crossed the line, most everyone had already begun to party on the Fort Worden Green. But that's not the point. The point is: I finished. Next year, I'm going to beat my personal record. Great young men, doing there best to provide an enjoyable game. This league started a couple of…read moreyears ago. Then It was the next best thing to Seattle and the Mariners. They had great food then. Bar Hop had a food truck with exceptionally delicious food as well as the Tribe serving hamburgers. This year, the Lefties team owner kicked out all vendors hoping to support advertising of his own new restaurant. Now they only serve hotdogs, funnel cake and pretzels at the games and they are mediocre at best. The beer selection is still good but the business decisions of the team owner leave the experience no better than a high school event.

The hubby and recently went out to Port Angeles for our first half marathon. The NODM was amazing…read more They run the event in the beginning of June each year (next year will be on June 3, 2012). They have a marathon, half marathon, 5K, 10K and kids events. The course is beautiful and runs through trees, streams, open fields and along the ocean. There are lots of stations along the trail where different groups have volunteered to provide water, gatorade and snacks. There are even average folks who come out to hose you down, offer water from their own little tables set up or just hang out to cheer you on. This is the first time either of us have done anything like this and it was a huge challenge. The event was so well run, organized and executed and everyone was made to feel so welcome and supported. We will be back next year for sure!
