You pay for the convenience, and although fares as low as £49 are advertised, I've never been able to get anything as low as this. At peak times you'll pay from £150 to £300 for a return with your car, and maybe £400 if you want flexi-times. These days, the ferry companies have upped their act and the RORO procedure has been cut to a matter of minutes, to compete with the 35-minute Tunnel crossing. If you get there early, there's no avoiding being shepherded into the Shopping Zone, where W.H.Smith, Burger King and all the usual suspects lay in wait for you. The Duty-Free on the UK side is that in name only, and you'd have to be slightly potty to buy here when La France is just minutes away. Nevertheless, the speed with which you get across to France is amazing, and the loading on and off is slick and efficient. The crossing is not for the claustrophobic, however. Of course, this meant I didn't have any accommodation set up in advance. But the lovely Albanian taxi driver who met me at Canterbury West station rang some hotels while driving me to others to find a suitable room during Freshers Week (who from Australia knows what that is?) with most places fully booked. I really needed two nights in the one spot so I wouldn't have to drag myself out of bed by someone else's timetable. With plenty of drunk students roaming the midnight streets, it really was wonderful to have such a taxi driver turn around the image of being taken advantage of when vulnerable in an unknown city. Many thanks (& I know other customers have been very happy too because of the calls coming in while I was in his car and he had other drivers look after them for him). Only sorry I didn't ask his name to thank him here personally.

Simple, fast and a good option for travellers with pets…read more We went to the UK this year and took the Tunnel both ways. We had our dog with, so this was way faster than taking the ferry and we didn't have to be seperated from our doggy. Prices are similar to the ferries. Taking the dog from the UK into mainland EU is simple. No special preparations are needed. The boarding areas both in Folkestone is pretty big with plenty of shops and fast food chains. Pet areas as well. The arriving area is quite a bit smaller. Just a shop or two and some fast food chain. Small pet area and a gas station. That's it. But it's all you need I guess. The Check-In is pretty fast (even faster if you prepare everything in advance online) and the lines are moving quickly. We got chosen randomly for a security check, which took a few minutes. Enough to miss our booked train. But that's wasn't a big deal, the next train left in 25 minutes, and we didn't have to do anything extra to get on that one. Time enough to eat a Burger in the car in the waiting line. Once inside it's a fast ride and pretty smooth and quiet. Most people stayed inside their cars....but you can wander around a bit, if you fancy a talk with some travellers. Exiting the trains is a fast affair. In a matter of minutes after arriving you'll find yourself on the motorway. Be sure to drive on the correct side :) We really liked the Tunnel. Of course, a ferry might be more enjoyable when it comes to travel. But if you have a pet, I'd go for the Tunnel. It's all very well organised. Travelling from Folkestone to Calais is a bit easier. Everything is thought trough very well with good signs. From Calais to Folkestone it's a bit more difficult.

We had initially booked the ferry and ended up canceling it for the simple reason that you had to leave the dog in cargo in car. The train was easy and quick without stress for all. Prices are not too dissimilar to the ferry and the process is fairly quick and easy. Would definitely use this service again. It was my first time and I really liked it.

The bed was comfortable but the height of it and the placement of the television (at a little over bed-height) when combined with my double chin made TV viewing a little uncomfortable. Poor planning. Breakfast was very nice. However, not without some problems. On the first day we went down at 10am expecting that half an hour would be plenty of time. Due to the slow service by the time our breakfast had arrived they had started clearing away the buffet items. My full English breakfast wasn't as full as it could have been. I only had one fried egg and there was no black pudding (kaszanka). Not that I am particularly fond of black pudding, but I would like to get some. I suspect I had been given someone else's break. Oh, the toast was burnt too. When I am staying in a classy hotel I expect them not to burn my toast. Breakfast on the second day was more agreeable, I arrived early to ensure I was able to take advantage of the buffet. The hotel's cocktail bar was very nice. The first night I had an egg nog and for a nightcap a banana rumba drink. Not cheap at ten pounds a shot. But, hey, I wasn't paying Checking out was a pain. The girl had trouble understanding that I wanted separate bills for each night's stay. I gave up in the end.

Plus, Patisserie Valeri across the street has some of the best pastries i've ever had. -The rooms were nice, a good size and modern. The beds were comfortable but a wee-bit narrow but nothing extreme. -The staff was O.K nothing to write home about but they are not very knowledgeable of the area but were fine overall -The restaurant looks like a complete waste of money but then again I didn't find the desire to eat there with so many options just down the street. I took a trip to Canterbury with a small group of friends recently and we decided to do quite a bit…read moreof the tourist program. One of the obvious stops is a river boat tour! Such a cheesy cliché, had to be done! We picked a random time slot and were led down a few small foot paths to the moorings where we met our captain, who's name I'm unfortunately struggling to recall, and took our seats in the boat. During the ride up and down the river Stour, our guide told many stories about the history of the area and the buildings along the river. We had to duck under some bridges and tuck into corners to let other boats pass, though it was of course our captain doing all of the actual work. He also had a lot of tidbits and anecdotes to entertain us and was quite funny.   As cheesy and touristy as this activity was, I actually enjoyed it.
