Small it might be but 100% better than Childwall Library which has definitely seen better days. Allerton Library is modern (it isn't dated on the inside) and well equipped with a computer suite, tables to sit and work or discuss the challenges of the day at and as you would guess many many books. The library is very accessible with a long ramp up to the entrance. There is no waiting about to take your books out, as if you are registered, you can take them out via the self service machine. The opening hours are pretty good Monday to Wednesday, but go a bit down the pan on the remaining days. Longer opening hours on these days would be good, or maybe that is just me - I guess it cannot hope to be a 24hr tesco's.

Anyway, this is not aided, in the case of Allerton library, by the smallness of it and hence the additional feeling of claustrophobia. From the exterior the building looks shabby and practically abandoned. Inside, it's a little gloomy. Chances are, they've refurbished it since I last went in (at least 5 years ago) but there's a good chance they haven't. Having been somewhere I went to almost on a weekly basis as a kid, I can't imagine it being that inviting in its current state. Still, like I say, it might been brought up to date. Some of the books definitely needed replacing and a few extra staff wouldn't have been a problem. Despite all this, it's a nice enough place for small family outings, and less formidable than the huge main library in town.

There is an excellent childrens section as well as a quite comprehensive adult section and a small reference section. They have internet capabilities and offer storeytime and other events for children. Staff are helpful in finding or reserving anything specific. A great local resource.

Golborne library is at the heart of the community. It is situated just behind the main shops on…read moreTanners Lane. The car parking is the same as the main shops and there is lots of space. The selection of books is good for a relatively small library and they can get you any book from across the Wigan area quite quickly. There is free internet access which is very useful. The staff are very helpful and quite knowledgeable if you need help. There are also activities in the holidays for children.

I think that the Wirral really falls behind Liverpool in terms of the quality of libraries in the…read morepeninsula. I mean, West Kirby Library is ok as it has a few computers that you can use the internet on and a wider open community space. But really, all the libraries are old fashioned and seem to use archaic equipment. When you go travelling you notice that in other countries such as the states and Australia, libraries can become community hubs for serious intellectuals and learning. Pensby library doesn't seem to have that. They have a minimal range of popular fiction, children's books and nonfiction books. They have three or four outdated computers for community members to access the internet, and they have a dull, drab 70's style building that could do with a revamp and a refurb. The staff are friendly enough, and they are happy to ring around other libraries to track down the title that you are after. But I really wish that the libraries in our peninsula would get a bit of money spent on them for the sake of the community as a whole!

Huyton Library is a medium sized, general public library in the village of Huyton, a very short…read morewalk from the train station and shopping centre. I'm a bit of a library hound, as I love books, and I used to work in two different libraries, and love discovering and exploring new ones. This one fairly impressive for a small town library. They have a good sized general fiction section, as well as a good children's area. And they were doing story time when I went in, so you can bet they have some good children's programs on during the summer months for your kids. I didn't really have time to check out the craft section, which is a bit annoying since I'm always on the look out for both new craft books and old, vintage gems, but maybe next time I'm in the area. All in all, a good library. You may not find highly specialized books here, but you will find the basics, and you'll certainly find something to take home and read.

Not a big library and the opening times are limited but I would rather go here than town centre…read moreone, the staff have always been very friendly and never seem too busy to help as has been the case in town, my daughter loves going to choose her books and settles happily in the junior section whilst i choose mine and I can see her which is important. For a small place it is bright and airy, there is a good selection of books and you can order any that they havent got in. Books from any Lancashire library can be returned here as well. There are about 6 computers connected to the internet which are free to use if you are a member.

It's definitely expaned more in time, the staff are very friendly and as its part of the whole Bolton chain of libraries, you can reserve a book from any branch free of charge. Horwich library also has about 8 internet-accessible PCs, free of charge.

They can get any book from across the St Helens area relatively quickly and being a member there means you a member of all the libraries should you be passing them. The parking is shared with the shops so isn't great and is limited to 2 hours. They have a lot of activities on in the summer for children.
