I haven't been here in years but it's as good as I remember! They start the table off with edamame which is a staple for me ordering in a Japanese restaurant so that was a pleasant surprise! We were a large group and the staff was very friendly and attentive. I ordered the Buddha scallop for an app cuz it sounded very unique. I was expecting one scallop but it actually came with 4! It was scallops over guacamole served on a Pringle-interesting yet very tasty! Expecting a much smaller amount, I over ordered on my dinner but it was so good I had to be a member of the clean plate club-I got the sweet potato tempura roll, peanut avocado roll and the spicy onion roll-despite it not being spicy at all, it was still delicious. Amazing last minute stop in after a JCPenny photo shoot. Closes at 10 and had like 45 minutes to order and eat. Never disappoints with the customer service and especially the food. not trying to bash this place. but... the service was very slow and to start, no one asked us what we would like to drink, so we had water the whole time. next our waitress messed up the order, and then it took even longer for the correct order to come out. 4/7 of the meals were served within the hour of ordering. the meals which took the longest? a bowl of edamame which is on the appetizer menu. the lighting was VERY dark and it was hard to read the menu. as much as this angers me, the food was good. not amazing, but good. i'm sure with the added wait it tasted better than it actually was. read more

I returned to Aji 53 after a long time last night and it was a good choice. I used to go every week. It used to be my favorite restaurant until I felt the rolls became chincy and I stopped going. The place always has good beats playing and the atmosphere is cool. Our waiter was great. He was attentive to our needs and had a good personality. I ordered the orange blossom Margarita which was strong but yummy. We skipped appetizers and went straight for our main entree. For my dinner, I ate the sunshine roll and new year rolls which were what I always ordered in the past and I was impressed. The new year roll was my favorite last night and was packed with flavor! Fish was definitely fresh. The other guests there with me also enjoyed their rolls. At the end of dinner our waiter brought us sake bombs on the house. Was a nice ending. So in summary... Hi Friends, Yelp led me to the Delicious Aji 53 in Bayshore Village. Walking in we were really pleased to see the big selection of Happy Hour specials. Also there is a FREE sake bomb with Yelp check-in. I'm a fan already. I was celebrating my birthday week pub crawl with my college friend Mikey. Aji 53 looked like a great spot to stop in. Pulling up to the bar we were warmly welcomed and really happy to see the big screen TV with the Sunday Night Football game on. Happy hour special seem to be the thing to do we got the Free sake bomb with Yelp check-in, the crispy fried Goyza with the off-the-wall sweet spicy dipping sauce..and an incredible delicious and generously stuffed veggie wrapped lobster roll. Mikey spied the 12 year old Japanese whiskey on the Shelf and we decided that we would try it. The barmaid suggested that we had it shakin with shaved ice and we were happy to experiment. Shaken not stirred.. the food came quickly to the bar, the sake bomb was followed by a jumbo bottle of hot sake to sip. But it disappeared rather quickly for just sipping. No worries friends.. bottle number 2 was brought quickly to the bar. Mikey and I had a great time at Aji 53 in Bayshore I really recommend that you stop by and check the place out. I have been going to this restaurant for years and also ordering take out at least once or twice a month. I ordered a lunch special of three rolls for 14.00 along with 60.00 of other food. I asked that they pack the three rolls separately because one was a California roll and they didn't want it next to fish for allergy reasons. She called me back and refused to pack them separately because it was a "lunch special". I'm absolutely flabbergasted. I have never made a special request, complained about an order or had any issue with this place in all the years I've used them. I asked her to refund my order and I absolutely won't order ever again. It's a petty thing to do to a loyal long time customer. Their sushi hasn't been that good lately either. Food was ok but the sushi chefs have ZERO personality. No greeting by any of the 4 chefs when we sat down to an empty bar. They just all chat amongst themselves in Chinese and ignore the customers. They don't even look at you. That would never happen in an authentic Japanese restaurant. Waitresses were friendly but hardly came to check on us so we asked one chef for more ginger and he calls the waitress so he can hand it to her instead of me. She made me very uncomfortable. I tried ordering a roll and she suggested something else. Lady, if I'm already ordering a $12 roll, bite your tongue, take my order, and walk away. They had a ridiculous amount of specials, which is good I suppose, but it was overwhelming. We ordered the red snapper sashimi and that was delicious. So fresh, portion was large, but had a similar price tag to match. I assumed it would be around $25. Nope, $30. Expensive. And prices weren't mentioned in the ordering process, so we were a bit stunned when the bill came. As for me, I had a special roll with chunks of salmon, avocado, spicy tuna on top, and a mango sauce. This roll was mushy. I did not have one full piece because it continuously fell apart. My spicy scallop roll was also filled with tempura flakes. I couldn't even tell it was scallop! And for $8, I want to be able to know its scallop. My boyfriend enjoyed the items from the menu that he ordered, but I just wasn't wowed. There is much better sushi way closer to home. I wouldn't venture out this far for sushi in a million years. Aji is definitely a solid sushi place! Every time I have gone or ordered in the food has been good and fresh. Most recently I ordered a lunch special and the mango shrimp tempura roll was excellent. The Tokyo roll which is spicy shrimp and spicy crab was also super flavorful. First off the vibe is nice albeit very dark and very red inside, had to turn up my phone's brightness to see the menu. The service was also nice and very quick! My order ended up being wrong, I didn't fix it but I ended up with the shrimp tempura instead which is whatever because I like it as well but the shrimp tempura was dry and little to no sauce on it, the other roll "American Dream" was really good. I have been here many times over the years but last night was an awesome experience. Our server was Richard. He was very fun and friendly. We had a great time doing sake bombs and trying a bunch of sushi rolls. I had the amazing tuna which was soooo good. Super fresh. We had the American Dream roll , pico roll , a roll with steak on top which was different and everyone loved. Drinks were strong and good. Cucumber and coconut margarita are a must try. Came here for a date, and was impressed. Excellent sushi. The Monster roll was unbelievable--spicy, but not overbearing. The eel in my eel avocado roll was some of the best I've ever had. One thing to note is that there is only a very small hot food menu. Don't bring someone who dislikes sushi here. This isn't a criticism but something to be aware of, especially since the place has that date/birthday/celebration vibe. This place is exactly what you'd expect for this area. It's a place trying their best to be trendy and "hip" while the food suffers. I had heard good things, but I'm always suspicious of eating around this area. Walking in, I was already put off by the dark setting, the loud music, and the flashing lights. My coworker and I were the only Asians eating there, which was probably a bad omen. We were put in the back by the bar where it was so dark I almost had to pull my phone out to read the large menu. On first glance, what stood out to me were the prices. They were a bit higher than I'd expect, I guess to fit in with the atmosphere they were creating. We started with miso soup. It was standard instant noodle soup you'd get anywhere. It definitely was not a miso soup made with miso paste in dashi. I recognized the bite of the dehydrated seaweed and the texture of the perfectly cubed pieces of tofu. Nothing exciting so far. We then got calamari which were awful. They were frozen calamari and the kind seasoned to be served more at an Italian place. The rings were very thin and each piece was mostly breading. The texture of the breading was also very heavy handed. There was no flavor of squid. The dipping sauces did not help things at all. Then came our sushi. Everything was pretty disappointing. We ordered the Bay Shore roll as well as the Monster roll. Both were much smaller than you'd expect for the price and the flavors just did not gel. The ingredients and the sauces were a mishmash and the flavors just clashed. I got some salmon nigiri which were acceptable, although the cut on the salmon was subpar and resulted in the salmon itself being a bit "stringy". Overall, the two of us spent just over $40 per person for subpar food. This place should put some focus on the food instead of trying to be trendy. They have no right to be trendy if they can't even serve a decent sushi roll or fry some fresh calamari. This is the kind of place you'd expect to see on Kitchen Nightmares as Gordon Ramsay starts yelling at them for serving frozen breaded calamari. read more

A friend got take out w me and had 3 wavy blond hairs in her food some in the fried rice, one coming out of a sushi roll. Manager was a condescending and gross, asked my friend where she's worked in a restaurant and what her credentials are. Over the phone we were nice. He said come in 'we will remake your order'. *** you would think the entire order bc that's what we paid for & we said neither of us are eating it.*^ (He also said no one there had blonde hair and everyone was Asian w a hat. Mind you, the hosts are all teenagers in Guess crop tops w their extensions everywhere. Another long drive there, at this point we're upset & don't want a remake bc if there was that much hair before, this isn't our idea of edible. We also paid decent money. Bay Shore has a plethora of choices when it comes to Japanese cuisine- all of which are actually very good when put against the ones of neighboring towns. However, Aji 53 is my all time favorite for signature rolls. Since it's opening it has been on the cutting edge of flavor and creativity. Their flavors rival any of the noteworthy joints in Manhattan or Brooklyn- as does the decor. In truth, the quality of their customer service has become inconsistent since its opening...which I wish they'd work on (hint hint). But regardless, their sushi is the best I've ever had. Food breakdown: (bare with me, I've had close to everything so this is difficult) -the green salad. NO, this is not your typical crunchy green salad with ginger dressing. This is much, much more. The dressing is creamy and delicious. I can't explain more than that. They should bottle it. It comes with what seems like jicama, spring mix, tomatoes...amazing. Don't skip this. -spicy edamame, trust me -shumai, fried oysters, and tuna pizza are all winners Sushi- Bay Shore, monster, rock and roll, holiday, American dream (I call this the gateway roll- this will convert ANY non-believer.), 3rd avenue (no longer on menu but ask for it!!) all among my favorites. Aji used to be one of my all time favorite sushi places. I tried my first sushi roll here about 7 or so years ago! Over time, I have become disappointed in the quality of the sushi. I feel that the fish is not as fresh as it used to be, Roll size decreased & also the care and finesse that went into each roll has definitely decreased. Yet, I still return for certain highlights that I have yet to find elsewhere. I came today for the lunch special (2 rolls from a select menu, with either a soup or salad for $8.50) and I was not impressed by the look and taste of the fish. I had to order a specialty roll to satisfy my craving. Highlights: 1. Ginger dressing for the green salad is the best I've ever had. I have still yet to have found one that compares. I went here for lunch once with a friend and we both agreed that it was just okay. The food is honestly very bland - I had some sushi and the hibachi. The hibachi was the most bland hibachi I have ever had! Absolutely zero flavor! The sushi was fresh but, again, disappointingly flavorless. There was also a LOT of lettuce in the sushi rolls - and lettuce is not something normally given in spicy tuna or shrimp tempura rolls. Very skimpy on the roll fillings. I honestly wouldn't recommend this place or visit it again, but the interior is beautiful and the service was great. The food just doesn't deliver ANY flavor! Better off taking the ride to a number of other better than average sushi joints in area. I got take out on a Tuesday aways a good indicator or fish quality and chef quality.(they are open on Mondays so that says a lot) Picked up order. First off the Blue fin toro sushi was inedible from appearance to taste. I fed it to my dog. The cuts of salmon were sinewy a clear sign of lazy or lack of craftsmanship when cutting sushi. There is a reason these chefs train for years.. The yellowtail had typical discoloration from not being stored correctly and again sinewy cuts of fish. The fluke/whitefish was ok... I also got a tuna avocado roll. Very simple roll but by far their best showing. Maybe be better to keep it simple when ordering here.. Ordered a garden rainbow roll and it is clear the chef/owners are fans of Escolar(white tuna). Tuna and salmon look decent again the hamachi(yellowtail) is very discolored and fish's taste started to be affected. Fish cuts were better and you could easily bite through the cuts of fish on the rolls. All in all I would definitely consider walking past Aji 53 and trying out/exploring another sushi restaurant in the area as they may offer a much better sushi dining experience. Sorry Aji 53. Terrible customer service. Literally late anytime an order is placed.

No one can deny that the sushi and food at Aji is delicious. Because it is. My biggest issue with this restaurant is their customer service and their ability to get food out on time when you've placed an order. Waiters and people who work there often are rude or have very bad communication/time management skills. While many of their foods including their salad dressing, miso soup and unique rolls are quite good, there are numerous other Japanese restaurants right down the street that treat you with more respect. Why not just go to them? read more

I arrived at Aji 53 and my order wasn't ready. 45 minutes went passed when I had enough of waiting and asked for a refund. I asked the young blond lady behind the pick up area for a refund and she ignored me, then I asked the Asian lady behind the pick up counter for a refund she walked away from me. I spoke to the ladies seating people to stay who got a manager. He was extremely rude when I asked for a refund. The Asian lady came back 10 minutes later and tried to hand me a bag of food. Which I refused and again had to ask for a refund. This is the worst customer service I have ever seen and I will never be spending money here again.... go somewhere else! read more
