It took us 3 tries, but we finally had dinner here at Akami Sushi. (1st time their rice cooker was broken, the 2nd time the wait was too long for dinner) Whoa, we were so impressed with the freshness of all their fish. Glad also they are on Yelp Waist list. We put our names on the list before we left the house, and we only had to wait another 10 mins for a table for four. I ordered: Aburi Salmon, 3 Sampler Salmon and Blossom Rolls. The aburi salmon was seared, and the truffle salmon was my favorite from the sampler plate. The Blossom Rolls was wrapped in soy paper. Hubby ordered: Negitoro don, Scallop carpaccio, and rock shrimp tempura. The fish was amazing and this was the best shrimp appetizer dish we've had at a Japanese restaurant. Our friends ordered the Black Cod entree plate, Yellowtail sushi, and the albacore onion roll. All our plates were completely clean without any leftovers. Their hot tea is served in a kettle, and service was prompt & friendly. Pricing is similar to what you pay in Little Toyko, but it's so much closer to home here in Arcadia SGV. We did the $150/person omakase. It was 9 courses. It definitely won't get you full, but it's enough to feel satisfied. We really enjoyed the sushi with the wagyu and the uni from Japan. It was also our first time trying truffle and caviar, so that was a nice experience. Portions were just enough to taste everything. We sat at the bar and the waitress was very attentive to us. Fantastic new sushi spot in the SGV! Just opened a few days ago and they're doing a great job - their sushi was so fresh and flavorful with flawless texture - definitely quality fish here. Service was top notch and their unique homemade ice cream was delectable! We tried two Special Rolls and a Signature Sashimi item. But before we got to any of that, the chefs generously welcomed us with a sample of their Spicy Tuna Crispy Rice - it was lovely. The rice had a soft, supple texture on the inside with a perfect crisp on the outside and their spicy tuna is well made with a perfect spice level (I'd say between mild to medium). I'll definitely be ordering that on my next visit. Then we tried their Yellowtail Carpaccio from the Signature Sashimi menu - it's always one of my faves and theirs is delightful! Six plump slices of yellowtail topped with a fresh jalapeño slice in a light vinegar sauce - fresh and excellent. For our rolls, we shared an Arcadia Roll and Tuna Crunch Roll - both delicious. The Arcadia Roll has spicy tuna and cucumber inside, wrapped in soy paper and topped with seared yellowtail, jalapeño, sauces & unique chili threads on top! The chili threads were a very interesting and fun touch - red stringy concoctions with a smoky spice to them. The Tuna Crunch Roll has spicy tuna, cream cheese & cucumber inside, is wrapped in soy paper and topped with tempura and some lovely sauces as well - this one was my fave....but I'm a sucker for cream cheese anything lol! For dessert, we couldn't resist trying out their homemade ice cream which the staff are all very enthusiastic about haha! Definitely a dish to be proud of. We wanted to try the citrusy Yuzu flavor but they were out so we went with the Shio Koji flavor that comes topped with rice puffs - what a fabulously unique dessert! The ice cream has a very creamy, somewhat dense texture with a milky, almost light caramel flavor to it - and the rice puffs add a brilliant slight crunch to it that just puts it over the top. It was lovely - definitely give it a try! The staff and chefs couldn't have been more welcoming and excited - they were so attentive and enthusiastic about the menu. It was such a lovely experience. Their unique touches to their rolls and the menu really make them stand out! Prices are very reasonable given the location and quality. Everything was so clean with chic decor and a very cozy vibe. They have a large sushi bar with lots of roomy seating and several tables with partial views of the San Gabriel mountains. They're located in a small shopping plaza with a small private parking lot but there's also street parking in the area. We had dinner here about 10 days ago on a Saturday and I was very impressed with the food. Outstanding freshness and variety. Love the yellowtail sashimi and everything we ordered was outstanding. Service was good but a bit rushed that is the only downside. We were at the sushi bar and there isn't much room there. Drinks came after our first two courses and the order in which the food came out was mixed up and not the way I asked for it. My friend and I were hungry after work and was in the mood for some sushi close by. We stumbled upon this hidden gem as it showed on Yelp as. new restaurant so why not try it! Food - 5/5 all around! Everything from the House Salad, to the sushi rolls down to the dessert! We settled for a house salad to share but decided one was not enough so we ordered a 2nd one. The house dressing had a tangy flavor which paired well with the salad! The Mixed Tempura was a unique one that came with Matcha Sea Salt on the side which I have never heard of before but it is good! There were a few other appetizers that I wanted to try. The hand rolls were filled with a lot of ingredients, and not just the rice and veggies but more of the main items such as the fish or crab meat. I would With the rolls, we opted in for the Arcadia Roll and Tuna Crunch roll. The flavor and quality was amazing and you can tell everything was fresh. I was even telling my friend that the type of rolls we were eating were the types of roll we would have gotten at a fine dining sushi restaurant. Lastly, the Shio Koji Ice Cream with rice puff. As my friend and I took our first bite, we were literally speechless the whole time because of how delicious it was. It was a sweet and creamy texture and a hint of caramel almost. The server told us that this is made in house from the owner's recipe. You have to try this if you decide to come here and you won't be disappointed. My wife and I have been here before when they first opened. We got the Sashimi premium and we thought the fish was on the fishier side but overall not terrible. Fast forward to today, we decided to give it a second shot and there were a number of things that I needed to express. First of all, the person who took our order looked like a possible manager because he was dressed differently but not in a professional way. The servers and cooks were all wearing uniform and then you have this guy in a t-shirt and shorts. Not only that, he did not take our order completely, leaving out my sake that I was looking forward to. But that wasn't a big deal for me. Second of all, I had an issue with the fish. My wife ordered the sushi premium and I got two orders of sashimi, hirame and kinmedai. The sushi premium was okay, they used classic fish (salmon, tuna Yellowtail etc). My wife said the cuts of the fish were inconsistent and sometimes too thin where it fell apart. My sashimi were abysmal. I could not taste the hirame because they hid the flavors with strong essence of lemon peel and the kinmedai was completely drenched in truffle. If you love truffle, go for it, but I do not feel $30 for 6 pieces of sashimi is justified if I cannot taste the sashimi I ordered. I sent the order back. This leads me to my last point. The returned order was not followed by an apology nor was it followed by an offer to replace the dish. The service at the restaurant is not the best but i feel like the lack of follow up on a returned dish is huge red flag of bad service and is the nail in coffin for me. Not coming back. read more

This was our third time visiting Akami Sushi, and it did not disappoint! My mom doesn't eat raw fish and they have plenty of entrees that she could choose from - we ordered chicken teriyaki, salmon teriyaki, and black cod. Their teriyaki sauce is DELICIOUS! It goes with anything and everything, they make something thats supposedly mundane absolutely yummy. Also the plating of things is just sooo nice. We also ordered yellowtail collar which was cooked to perfection. The breading on the vegetable tempura was just the right amount with a little bit of umami to it. This is a new and pretty small sushi place. Parking lot is small too but I think they also have parking in the rear. It's so new that they don't have sun shades up, so if you're eating when the sun is about to set, the sun will be in your eyes for a good while. The Miso soup was pretty salty so I didn't finish it. The White dragon roll was really yummy. They didn't provide ginger or wasabi until we requested it. Mentaiko Mazemen smelled like truffle when they brought it to our table. It was delicious, but there's not really any protein so this dish is more for sharing. Black cod and salmon entrees were pretty tasty, but more so the black cod. It was very tender and flavorful. When we placed the order, they mentioned the dish takes longer to come out but it was the first thing to come out and my salmon was the last thing to come out. The flavor for the salmon came more from the teriyaki sauce. My salmon took so long to come out that my dinner mates already finished their entrees. I was so hungry that I forgot to take a picture of it! The sushi set also took really long to come out so they upgraded it to include a few extra pieces. As for their sushi quality, it's alright. It's not the best but it's not bad either. We've had fresher elsewhere. Service was alright, but they didn't check up on us to make sure our dishes were all there until we asked about it. They also weren't very proactive on water refills. Their kitchen needs to work on their pacing cause it made for a really awkward dinner. Glad I decided to give this place a try. The old restaurant Mako sushi has been at this location for at least 25 years. Although we really liked the sushi at Mako, we were always hesitant to go back because of the poor service. When Akami Sushi opened, I gave it a go and to my surprise the food was still very good and the servers are all over the top friendly. The interior space is warm and inviting and also very bright. We ordered the Chirashi, Salmon donburi, Ribeye lunch special and uni pasta. Everything was so good. Very fresh sashimi and the standout dish was the uni pasta. Dishes were not overly seasoned or salty. The best dishes we had was the dessert! We got the fermented sake ice cream and hojicha panna cotta. Both so good and not overly sweet. The Good: It seems to be an authentic sushi spot operated by Japanese. The service is always excellent, and the waiters and men preparing the sushi are very friendly and accommodating. It's a small intimate, cozy spot with nice wood paneling. The rolls are good, though they seem to really favor spicy tuna because it's in most of the rolls. I'm not a fan of that. My two favorite rolls are the baked crab and salmon and the flower blossom. The Bad: The only issue here is the number and size of pieces for the price. You only get 6 pieces per roll and these rolls are very small compared to other sushi spots (I've been to) and have very little meat. They really need to give at least one additional piece per roll. Also, the seaweed cucumber salad I would avoid, as the portion is extremely small here. You cannot get remotely close to a full meal at this place unless you're willing to fork over well over $110 (for 2), and that does not include any specialty drinks. My kids and I love sushi! And we have gone to a lot of restaurants and usually, only to Japanese operated ones because there is a difference in quality and taste. When we first walk into a new place, I always pay attention to what language the chefs and waiters/waitresses speak. Well, they were not speaking Japanese. But I must say, the food is excellent! The presentation is excellent. And the service was wonderful! Salty. Salty. Salty. And I don't just mean the food. TLDR: I do not recommend getting the Salmon Skin Salad. The service was good. Parking was limited. Interior is pretty small as well. There is a small parking lot out front, and I managed to get the last available spot! It was a late lunch, so the wait time was really short. They were still using the lunch menus with adjusted lunch pricing. The tables inside are set for a maximum of 4 people, but the staff were nice enough to add a chair to the end of the table for the fifth person in our group. There were several other tables by the window and a bar area right where the chefs were making sushi. I ordered the Salmon Skin Salad. I must admit that the salad looked gorgeous when it came out! The salmon skin had a soft but crispy texture from being lightly breaded and deep fried. They had a slightly salty flavor that I don't think is just from when the sauce was poured over it. The mixed greens were okay. They were pretty much the same thing you can get at a supermarket. There were also little slices of cucumber inside, which I think usually does go well with chili sauces. The leaves felt a bit thin without much crunch, which just made the garlic chili ponzu sauce weigh them down. This sauce was extremely salty! The top of the salad was a bit more tolerable because the sauce descended and pooled at the bottom of the plate. However, when combined with the salt of the salmon skin, the sauce completely overpowered the greens. Each leaf became a sopping wet towel of sauce, which made each bite excruciatingly salty. I think I drank 3 glasses of water to help wash it all down throughout the meal. The cherry tomatoes did not help either because tomatoes are naturally tangy, which is also a strong flavor. Lastly, I think the ratio of salmon skin to greens could be improved. There was just so much salmon skin and not enough greenery to support it all. Either cut back on the salmon or add another vegetable with more substance like carrots or edamame or something. I'm not one to waste food--especially when my boss went through the trouble of treating us out to lunch, so I ate it all like a soldier. I just thought I'd leave this review here for people who may be considering getting this salad so they can be aware. I do think this salad can be redeemed. It would be great if the chefs could put the sauce in a little ramekin bowl or something on the side so that patrons can add as much or as little to their salad as they would like. I'd recommend asking the waiter to put it the sauce on the side if you do plan on ordering this just to be on the safe side. I would still probably come back to this location to try some sushi since that's what they seem to be known for. If I do, then I'll be sure to leave an updated review. read more

My family got sick afterwards (it was the only thing we had eaten that day). This is the one sushi place where I'd recommend going with rolls over sashimi + nigiri given the quality of the fish. The Sushi Premium came with 12 pieces of nigiri and 6 pieces of negitoro. The Black Cod Lunch set came with 2 large pieces of cod and sashimi. We enjoyed the same sides that came with the sets. Unfortunately the cod tasted as if it had been marinated for too long - the mushy fish was dissolving into the plate. I've been here for both lunch and dinner and I can see that it's becoming a popular local spot. Can be very busy for dinner so remember to put your name on the waitlist as you get closer. For lunch you get a great selection of fish and a good amount of food for about $45. Very tasty and filling and will definitely fix your sushi cravings. I like to get that and share an appetizer like their salmon skin salad, which is one of the better ones I've had. . For dinner I ordered their specials a la carte instead of doing the omakase. I liked it that way better so I can choose what I want. Don't forget the oyster shooter and chawanmushi. It's one of if not the best I've had anywhere. It's fine for what it is, but not deserving of 4.5 yelp stars, that's insane. They make pretty looking food but it's way out of balance. Rice is too sour, they are too much citrus to everything so halfway through the meal, the sourness adds up and kind of ruins your appetite. It's Thai run, and while there is nothing inherently bad with that, the flavors are certainly not authentically Japanese.
