This was a great hibachi place we stumbled upon while being out on the west side visiting a friend. They had sushi options as well that we tried before the hibachi. I had the filet hibachi and it was tender, tasty, and FILLING! even without the appetizer, easily 2 meals worth. Our waiter, Yancy, was absolutely amazing and the main reason I wanted to leave this review. (Hoping I spelled that correctly). He was full of character, amazing suggestions, and all around fun to be around. He made us some combinations of his favorite sauces to dip our sushi in and we ended up chatting about some of our fav kpop singers, like he was a friend we hadn't seen in years - chattin and catching up. I really wanted to like this place, but alas it was only mediocre tonight. I do believe the problem to be that they are horribly understaffed. We ordered food and some cocktails. We never received our cocktails. The other party at our hibachi table also never received the sushi they had ordered. But we did get waters and soft drinks and watch the food being prepared. It was entertaining as hibachis tend to be. Soup and salad are included in the hibachi experience. The soup was not a plain miso soup, but it did have a delicious broth and onions floating in it and was really delicious. Also appreciated having a choice of salad dressing. Most folks simply serve it with ginger dressing, but here you have two additional choices, Ranch or Sesame. I opted for the sesame dressing and was pleasantly surprised. A new favorite. I had the shrimp & chicken combo with fried rice. The shrimp were nicely done, but the chicken was rather dry and the fried rice was quite bland. My friend had the salmon and really enjoyed her dish. Overall, dinner at Akira was good! But Let's be honest... no one goes to a Teppanyaki restaurant expecting to be amazed at the food as much as they are impressed with the skills of the chef. In fact, Tappanyaki restaurants have a relatively low bar for me with my only requirements being does the food look and taste fresh? Akira hit this mark nicely! Both the steak and the shrimp were fresh and the preparation was flavorful, albeit "par for the course" for Teppanyaki. What impressed me most, though, was the fact that my wife's sushi was fantastic. It was also very fresh tasting, and generous with regard to its size. I don't typically expect good sushi in Indiana much less at a restaurant that's focused more on the grill - but the sushi at Akira will be added to my "go-to" list for Indy. The crab Rangoon was only average - mostly because I prefer a thinner, lighter wonton - but if you don't mind a thicker, doughier Rangoon, the flavor was fine. My only other negative critique was that we felt a bit rushed out of the restaurant with our server, bringing us the check before we had even really had a chance to eat very much and we had also planned to save room for mochi. This is not a major issue for me, just an observation. It was easy enough to rectify when we told him that we were still planning to order dessert. Overall, very good and we will definitely return. If I had read the reviews of this place, I would not have gone, but as it was, I enjoyed our experience. First, let me explain that I went there on Father's Day. Going out for steak guarantees long lines. After trying two other restaurants, we just about gave up. I was visiting from out of town, away from my family. I spied this place as we were driving by turned around and gave it a try. I was pleased. Ambiance was typical of most Hibachi grills It was nice, clean and open. Normally I do not need the entertainment of the hibachi, but we conceded anyway. Seated by ourselves at a grill for eight, we had a wait to get attention. As we agreed, it was not a long line and it was air conditioned. They were not overcrowded and by the time we finished, there were plenty of open tables. Chefs rotated the grills and I was very glad that we got the most entertaining one. There was too big a difference between them and they could all take lessons from him. I committed a tipping sin. It is customary to tip both the server and chef separately on the bill, even if there is not place for this. oops. We were seated at hibachi table with no wait. The chef was very funny and friendly and was exactly what you would expect from a hibachi chef. Jokes and tricks! I had chicken teriyaki and fried rice and veggies that came with it was generous amount and very tasty. 4 stars just because it felt like teriyaki was swimming in the sauce and the whole thing became very salty. This place was fun! It's always cool visiting a place like this, where you can see your food being cooked and the chef does tricks with it (I'm a sucker for an onion volcano). Our chef was amazing and funny, and the food tasted excellent and fresh! I will say that portions are pretty big, but don't take your food home to reheat. My spouse at his today and actually got sick off of it about 20 min later. Service was pretty bad, but I believe that is because I only saw one server in the building who is grabbing everyone's drinks, salads, and soups.. it took him 20 minutes just to greet us, and my drink personally took almost a half hour to come out after that, and I had to ask about it twice (it was just vodka, sake, and wine). You could tell that he was very overwhelmed, and I really don't think its fair for him to be the only one on the floor on a Friday night. Today for $25 I got vegetable tempura, which was amazing better than I've ever had it anywhere else . WE also got the chicken lunch which included rice and salad. We also got hot tea. We came here Saturday morning around 11:30 before a movie. We weren't surprised the hostess stand was empty since they just opened at 11:00. We only waited a few minutes before being seated at a Hibachi table with another couple. The older gentleman who seated us took and delivered our drink order and arrived quickly. He was filling in until our server arrived which she did minutes later. He came back out to take our orders promptly. We order the Gyoza (fried dumplings) as an appetizer. The dumplings were very overcooked when they arrived. I was going to send them back but we were starving and short on time. Just moments after the dumplings arrived the onion soup and salad appeared. The onion soup was lukewarm and the ginger salad was literally lettuce only. Not even shredded carrots and the ginger dressing wasn't very flavorful. Edible but missing the mark. My husband ordered the hibachi steak with fried rice and I had the hibachi spicy chicken (sriracha). The Chef put on a wonderful show while preparing our meals. Both of the meats were prepared as requested, the onions and zucchini were tender as well as the fried rice. The dipping sauce served with our meal was bland and disappointing though. Our lady server never reappeared to refill any of the beverages at our table. My husband finally asked the Chef for a drink refill which he promptly notified the server. She again didn't return until we were through and waiting 10 minutes for our checks. The other couple were just as restless as we were. The food was good, the show was fun, the Chef was extremely personable but those minor misses put a damper on things. We had a fun evening celebrating a birthday. We got a free pineapple boat for the birthday boy. This place has a little slow service and the sushi isn't that great. I've tried a few different rolls here and they've always been rather mediocre. The hibachi chef's are always pretty good here and put on a descent show. The prices are a little high I feel like. So in summary I think service could be faster, sushi could be better, and prices could be lower. We drive buy Akira very often and we have wanted to try it, but never really had the opportunity. Last night, three of us were waiting on a friend with a delayed flight and we decided to stop here for a meal. Since we were in a bit of a time crunch, I called ahead to see if they had a wait and/or would reserve a table. The woman who answered the phone was very kind and helpful. She took our name and promised to have a spot for us. Watch out for the face slapping curtain on your way in. The wind had blown it up when we opened the door and I didn't see it until it smacked me in the face. Oh, how we laughed. We arrived around 6:30 on a Saturday and the restaurant was at about half capacity. We were greeted warmly. The staff are tremendously kind and friendly. Our server was a young man who was friendly, funny, helpful and kept our drinks full. We were taken to a teppanyaki table, but declined to sit here. Personally, we just aren't really that interested in the teppanyaki "show." If YOU are, I would recommend giving this place a try. We sat at a regular table and were given a sushi menu. There were a few noodle dishes, but mainly sushi. We were disappointed to not find other options like appetizers or bento boxes. We ordered 5 or 6 sushi rolls and two noodle entrees. The sushi came out and the rolls were okay. They weren't very well wrapped and fell apart at any attempt to lift them. They tasted fresh, but they each seemed very similar. Also, instead of the accompanying sauce being served on (or in) the roll - the plates had a side condiment cup. The only problem was that 2 of the 3 plated sauce cups arrived empty. By the time we figured out what was happening, we weren't bothered to ask about them. I'm certain, however, that the staff would have made it right. Much after our sushi arrived, the server came to our table to let us know that one of the noodle bowls ordered was no longer available. At this time, we just declined to have it and we all had a share of the one noodle bowl. It tasted okay. It wasn't overfly flavorful and it smelled like hot water. First of this was not due to covid they flat out forgot to put the order in and didn't care of their mistake! Yelp wouldn't let me give 0 stars! Small background I've worked just about every position in a restaurant for about 10 years from server, cook, bartender and manager. Let's dive into this restaurant; We were in town for a recreational event and called a couple hours ahead and asked if they could accommodate 10 guests with out any issues and they assured we'd be fine. So! We get to the restaurant at 7:45pm (reservation is for 8pm) we are not sat until approx. 8:20pm... we are given menus and that is all. Approx. 8:42 comes and we finally get water and the server asks if we are ready to order and so we do. Now we feel like we are getting some where and so we joke around and have a great time talking and we get our miso soup and salad and we eat... about 45 minutes later we are confused as to why our chef hasn't came out. The staff down to the owner just walks past and AVOIDS eye contact. We approach the owner and she says that we need to be understanding cause restaurant work is hard work, and staffing is hard and they don't have people. So we ask if we were going to be comped, discounted and she insisted we'd pay full price after being in the building for over an hour and 20 minutes and still haven't eaten dinner. This place is a steer clear and go to the competitors for sure! Benihana here we come!!!!! Miso soup tastes like hotdog water, sounds gross right? I wish I were lying. This is the second I have been here in the last few months and neither have been a pleasant experience. The first time the service was bad but this time it is completely horrible. We came back to give them a second chance. This time waited roughly 45 minutes to be seated and waited another 15-20 minutes to get our drink order taken. Don't come here if you expect exceptional service or even mediocre service. They have 2 waitresses and neither seem able to actually perform basic server functions. Drink refills are non existent and takes manager intervention to actually get a refill. Outside of the service, the cook started to cook our food only to realize he was at the wrong table. Instead of proceeding to continue to cook our food he packed up and moved. They never said sorry or anything. The best part was the cook proceeded to cook for another table that came in after us. If I could leave zero stars I would. Or negative, but I'll probably just end up reporting them to the health board instead. I literally can not believe that they are still operating. Me and my friend decided to try this place out. The most heinous portion of the meal was the fact that THE FISH WAS COMPLETELY INEDIBLE. Every single piece of seafood that was on our plate had an extremely fishy odor. The rolls literally fell apart when we tried to pick them up, which means that someone with absolutely no sushi making experience attempted to create them. The Akira roll tasted extremely sour, you could definitely tell that the fish was at least a couple of days to a week old. The Tiger roll had raw lettuce inside. Anyone with even a small understand of sushi should know never to put raw lettuce in a roll. Both the rolls had an extremely unpleasant texture. I have literally NEVER left sushi uneaten before in my life. I've also never wanted to gag while eating sushi. Well today changed that. I feel sorry for anyone else that tries the travesty that is their sushi rolls. The chicken was dry and pretty tasteless, but that compared to the rolls was a blessing. The entertainment was subpar. I also noticed the Mexican chef who was preparing our meal use his cooking utensils to flick on a light switch on top of the fan, can you say DISGUSTING? We decided to give this place a shot, having neglected to read the sushi reviews. We ordered 4 simple rolls, and after 45 minutes of waiting our server finally let us know our food was being prepared. So we sat another 15 minutes and by then half our order was brought out to us. I assume my first roll was supposed to be a spicy shrimp tempura, but it simply had no flavor, husbands was a mediocre soft shell crab. We ate these, unimpressed. Rest of our order came out and this is where it got interesting. Spicy yellowtail roll....yeah...I think not. The fish was shades of red, white, brown, and black , dried up, and very fishy smelling. In the dim light my husband didn't notice right away before he ate one piece and gagged, spit it out. We started picking it apart and couldn't figure out what type of foul fish they used. One piece we picked out wasn't even fish, only thing we could compare it to was the color and texture of chicken innards you toss while cleaning a fryer chicken. My husband will be lucky if he doesn't get sick. We let our waitress know, she was very apologetic and didn't charge us for that roll. We stopped to pay up front and promptly left. And to all the reviewers mentioning the hibatchi chef using his knives to turn the greasy fans on and off....hes still doing it. Health inspectors are going to have a field day with this place.
