I was in need of some minced lamb and not feeling like a battle with the queues (or prices) in Chapel Apple Co-Op, and knowing that Lidl doesn't sell any, I reckoned I'd be well in here. And I was right. At the back of the store is a loooong meat counter where they'll mince up whatever you fancy: bit of mutton, some goat, or maybe lambs feet? You can even order a whole sheep if that's your bag. Piles of fresh veg, including some that I didn't recognise, and spices and the like aplenty. And cans of Ting. I love Ting. 500g of freshly minced lamb was £4.50 and it was deeeeelish.

If, like me, you ever struggle to choose between about three sandwhich options then you may be liable to be frozen in cant-decide panic at the endless choices presented to you by Abu Bakar! Even the halva section appears to be never ending! They sell a wide selection of vegetables, a broad variety of juices, endless rows of pulses, spices, herbs, cakes, bread, jars of pickled items, huge sacks of rice and flour - possibly aimed at businesses but may be handy if you live in a big house, loads of condiments (including some very mysterious and tantalising items such as a pot of chololate and cherry something...spread?...whose ingredients list was in Polish only). Homeware-wise they have pots, pans, crockery and kitchen utensils. There is also a halal meat counter. As Susan mentions, Abu Bakar is aimed at the Aisian community, but for anyone like me with boringly British culinary habits it is a fascinating and exciting place of endless possibilities and obscure and intriguing ingredients.

The staff are really helpful, and the nearby parking means it's ideal if you need to do a large shop but don't want to do the supermarket run. Worth stopping by to check out the huge range of exotic fruit juices - hangover heaven.

The usual food, booze and toiletries once found in our good old supermarkets are now comfortably lodging next to clothing, electrical goods, magazines, a cafe, mobile phones, car and housing insurance...and probably a whole lot more. If you haven't already noticed I do like a good bitch at things now and again and I'm afraid Tesco may be one of those things..I can't quite decide. They are just sooo convenient. So much so that they drive all our nice little independent shops away and out of business. I do shop in Tesco occasionally I have to admit, I just hope that one day the world is not just full of giant Tesco shops that do everything, stripping everything of it's individuality and interest....but I'll stop ranting about it and let you decide what you think on the matter. This branch is a Tesco Express, so is a mini version of the big daddy's and doesn't have a clothing range or any TV's. Just the usual. It is open from 6am till midnight which is really handy if you're a early or late shopper or come home early/late from work. It's parked right next to a petrol station too in case you are half way through a long journey and desperately need a bite to eat as you load up your car.

A decent sized ASDA in Burnley, it isn't the best supermarket in town, I do prefer the nearby…read moreSainsbury's store at the other side of the retail park or the Tesco opposite the Bus Station, but this store isn't a bad alternative, even though I wasn't able to get a handful of items, which were stocked in supermarkets nearby, this wasn't down to lack of stock either, they just didn't have any place for them on the shelves where it could have been. The Fresh section admittedly wasn't too bad, in terms of ready meals and soups, which was one of the few parts of the store, where they're actually leading the way in Burnley and not trailing behind. There is a McDonald's and ALDI store nearby too, the location isn't bad within Burnley and can be easily accessed from the town centre as a pedestrian or via car. The store was clean, and in terms of overall feel, it was pretty much a typical ASDA. 3* - Not the best supermarket in town, but not terrible either.

Well, it's not that I mean to encourage the likes of a Tesco treading on the toes of the indie shop…read moreowners, but I needed a few bits and Tesco Metro happened to be the place in Horsforth to help me out. Having accidentally spent my entire Saturday shopping and browsing about town I realised that I needed to pop into Horsforth to grab some bits before it got too late. Happily enough Tesco sorted me out for everything I needed. Easy food, such as sausages and salad? Done. Porridge oats and raisins? Done. Veg to last the week? Done. There appears to be very little in this shop that they don't have. To be honest, there wasn't a thing I needed that they didn't have so it was a grand old visit. Of course, I did not find their prices any cheaper - if not a tad higher - than Somerfield and the like, but convenience is convenience, and that's what this was. The lady who served me was really quite sweet, and I could tell she was having a tough time dealing with a spate of customers and those hellish beastly 'self-serve' tills, so for that I was really pleased. If I can I will always prefer to go indie, but you have to give it to them, I couldn't have got my breakfast for this week any more easily than I did by nipping in here.

I suspect it is most frequently visited by restaurant/cafe owners or those with massive families who stock up on huge bags of rice, pulses and other products available in 'bulk buy'. They do, however, sell single portions of things for the lone shopper who enters anyway despite the huge 'cash and carry' exterior, such as myself. I managed to find cans of Coconut milk for only 59p each which is almost half the price of other retailers. My whole basket came to less than a fiver, which would have been more around the £8 - £10 mark in most other shops. They sell vegetables, breads, and meats fresh or frozen. Biscuits, sweet goods, kitchen wear such as baking trays and other handy bits and bobs, and various cosmetics such as bath/shower gel etc. Susan is right about the name being somewhat confusing as it is mainly foods from Asia and Africa and not the common British conception of 'continental food' (deli style West European). If you are after the latter (Italian, French, Spanish etc) you are probably better off going to a deli in town or a chain supermarket.

Specialises on pulses/spices/grain/meat/breads/veg and sauces I would associate with West Indian/Pakistani/Asian and possibly even Greek cooking. I'm a regular here to stock up on spices/chick peas and even black peppercorns as they're so cheap! I also frequent the butchery for Mutton or Goat to do in a curry. Prices are fantastic, packages have a variety of sizes to suit your needs and it's like an Aladdin's Cave. Go have a snoop around, I bet they stock something you'll want to buy at a great price!

I still get excited when I roll my trolley onto the travelator-escalator to go and hunt for clothes and electricals and toiletries and glasses and home stuff downstairs. Easy to while away a couple of hours here - especially cos there's a McDonalds at the entrance - so make sure you're not in a rush. Open 24 hours, but the staff tend to be less friendly at 1.30 in the morning, I've discovered. Was it because I was skipping down the aisles or something? Cheer up, you work at BIG ASDA!

This huge Asda store under went a big refubishment recenty. Sadly I don't think it improved the…read morestore in any way. Firstly they discounted lines of Halal sweets and I can no longer get them anyway. They also moved the baby section to the furthest corner of the store on the bottom floor which means its a right trail plus you have to go through the toy section and my older son now bugs me every shopping trip for a new. But my biggest problem is that they now employ staff to carry around signs in front of the tills which say space here which I feel is plain stupid. Clearly I can see for myself how many people are in a queue. Totally pointless. Dispite these problem the staff in this store are usually very friendly and helpful and the prices are great so it is a good place to shop.
