First timer but a friend had posted about their visit so we decided to try it. The place off I-10 wasn't busy (it was 5 pm on a Sunday) so we were seated right away. Aubree served us very well. The tortillas are thick and fluffy and perfect when warm! (They get a bit hard if you let them sit and cool). The poblano queso is definitely worth a try ... SO flavorful! I had the veggie enchiladas to try something different... it had carrot in it which was unexpected but okay (I guess I was thinking it would have more fajita-style veggies in it but that's on me for not asking). I came here for the first time in over a decade. Alamo has made some serious improvements regarding the free flour tortillas made in front of your eyes as you step inside the restaurant. They taste more homemade compared to the last time I've been here, which had the texture, taste and feel of the fresh tortillas you get from HEB. I also got a bowl of freshly hot chips. I had to decide from four choices that jumped right out at me: the Carne Guisada (which is a spicy Mexican-style beef stew), the Street Taco Dinner (which included beef fajita meat, tossed in chipotle sauce), the Brisket Taco Platter, and the Chicken Chipotle (which consisted of charbroiled chicken breast, topped with chipotle pepper sauce, and two types of cheese). I wound up getting the latter. Chipotle-fied chicken sounded right up my alley! *The fam teetered between chicken tacos for the boys and a salad for Michelle.* The food came (in a very reasonable amount of time) and we dug in. My plate was the cheese enchiladas plate (chili tasted like spaghetti sauce) not good, salsa was more tomato then any type of flavor(cilantro,onion) was needed. On Thursday girlfriend and I decided to grab a bit to eat and decided on Alamo Cafe. Neither one of us had eaten there in a while. We went in and was asked to sit at Booth 109. We were given tips and salsa while we were deciding on the course of our meal. The chips were soggy. We brought that to their attention and they brought us hey fresh sets. We ordered our meals and they came to us fairly quickly. While we were eating our meals my girlfriend noticed something crawling to her very right. She pointed it out to me I looked at it and it was a roach. I asked to speak to a manager he came over he apologized but also said he was sorry that it was there and that he did not place it there. The roads got away. The manager left and the roach reappeared. My girlfriend and I were both grossed out we got up and left. As I was leaving I made it a point to mention it to one of the other attendants and she also apologized and I thought we were not paying for a meal and we left. I was surprised to see that out of a business that have been around for all these years and have that in their business. Always been a favorite for our family. If last night had been the first visit, I would not have been as impressed. Sad face. The good things.....excellent service! Consistently delicious queso! Yummy and indulgent beef puffy tacos. If we had both had just this, it would have been great. Unfortunately my husband had the normally delicious chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes and green beans, along with a margarita on the rocks. The chicken fried steak itself was super oily and tasted of old grease. Yuck. The green beans had actually turned gray, they were so mushy and overheated. The mashed were lackluster. However, the food is Tex Mex which I'm not a big fan of and the rice is too salty, I also don't like the thick grains they use for their rice. My plate was the fish tacos and they were not that great. My husband had the Laredo chicken which looked pretty good and he says it was. My usual places for chicken tortilla soup were closed on a Sunday night. A Facebook group I follow had many comments saying Alamo Cafe had amazing tortilla soup. The Yelp reviews were mixed but I had no other option so I thought I'd try it. As their menu description says, there is literally nothing in the soup but the chicken, "broth", and a tostada with avocado on top. I couldn't find any pictures of this soup beforehand so I'm adding my own. The chicken soup and taco was sad and the "regular" size soup was only 12 oz. I was surprised when I took it out of the bag so I showed you the size comparison to a regular spoon. Would not get again.
