Avoid. I had my worst Dr visit experience ever with Dr Kimelman. He was rude and condescending. Probably time to retire, because he was very forgetful. He had a very poor attitude and seemed to think he was above the patient. The staff was nice, even while dealing with his obnoxious behavior. Dr. Kimelman has been my primary care doctor for my workers compensation case for several years. My injury was in 2012 and has required several surgeries and many other procedures along the way. Of the many doctors who have provided me care, I can steadfastly say that none have exceeded Dr. Kimelman's team in fighting for my rights as a Workers Comp patient, and in seeking out the best treatments for my condition. And it starts at the top, Dr. K has been a bulldog on my behalf, as workers comp can often be swampy waters to navigate, and they will often deny treatments, seemingly without reason. In addition to being my strongest advocate, of all the medical practices I have been to in this saga, Dr. K's is at the top of the list when it comes to their efficiency, courtesy, and responsiveness. Let me start this review by stating that I don't typically write reviews unless my experience could help someone else out. I felt compelled to write and post this review because I am an injured employee of the US Peace Corps and as I was injured while in service to my country I began my very long, tedious, painful and humiliating experience(s) of looking for various doctor(s) who accept DOL OWCP insurance who could help me with my injuries and eventually my mental health and chronic pain issues. Those of us who have fallen under the umbrella of the DOL because they got injured on the job while working for the Federal Government know the tedium of trying to find a doctor who falls under the DOL OWCP complicated purview and who is also good at their job and who want to help you. At this point in my 18-year journey of finding doctors who tried to help me or had no interest in helping me and all of whom eventually dumped me because they weren't getting paid by the DOL and or the DOL made it so difficult for physicians to work with them they finally stopped accepting DOL clients. I had to move back to my native Bay Area from San Diego where I had over the years living in SD curated a tenuous hodge podge of various doctors that took DOL insurance and I had a fairly smooth few years of getting treatment, sure many of the procedures that my doctors requested on my behalf were either ignored and or refused by the DOL I nevertheless had some doctors who were on my side. After Covid hit I returned home to the Bay Area and with real dread attempted to find new doctors who could help me with my various medical issues. I looked high and low through the different counties in the Bay Area to find a primary physician who would take DOL insurance. For over 2 years I couldn't find a single doctor who took DOL insurance. Finally, in desperation I posted on NextDoor and asked my community if the knew of any doctor that took DOL OWCP clients. A few people posted a reply, and one woman posted about Dr. Kimelman at: Kimelman Medical Group - Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation in Vallejo. With a slight bit of hope in my heart I called Dr. Kimelman's office, and a nice woman answered the phone and promptly provided me with helpful information and booked an appointment to see Dr. Kimelman. Once I arrived, I was greeted by a cheerful, kind and happy staff that turned out to be extremely competent, on time and truly caring. When I met Dr. Kimelman he and his staff immediately made me feel at ease. I felt like I was being heard for the first time by a doctor in a very long time. Dr. Kimelman asked questions and explained anything I needed clarification on. He also took time to do a thorough examination while one of his PA's took copious notes as he spoke. Dr. Kimelman and his staff do not know that I am writing and posting this review but I wanted other folks out there who are in my situation to know that there are still a few good doctors out there who fall under the DOL OWCP umbrella and who still care about their patients and care about their welfare and try their very best to get you the care that you need. Dr. Kimelman and his smart staff are excellent at what they do, because of their care my pain has improved, and my injuries are starting to receive better overall attention and care. I am surprised to read the negative reviews for Dr. Kimelman, and I notice most of them are from years ago. This review is based on my personal experience, and overall my visit with Dr. Kimelman was positive. I am extremely impressed with the patient care and compassion at his office. I came in for an NCS/EMG tests for my wrist. As this was my first time, I had been experiencing anxiety for the procedure and was reassured by the staff before, after, and during the procedure. The entire staff-- from the receptionists to the technicians, and to Dr. Kimelman-- were empathetic and accommodating to my needs. I appreciate how they were open to hearing my concerns and they ensured I was comfortable before continuing with the procedures. Their patient care and bedside manners contributed to my experience. I felt safe and looked after at this clinic. I would highly recommend testing here to anyone who needs it! read more

I've been seeing Dr. Kimelman since 2009. He's moved three or four times since first meeting him at his then San Rafael office. The recent office is in a small section of this parking lot that's not shared with the police station that this office sits. Parking can be very problematic. Be prepared to either be dropped off or to park up around the corner, an oddly very steep street. Beware of garbage day! Holy shite! The bins are mostly just off the curb and there are so many of them you'll be lucky to find a spot that's not inhabited by a garbage bin. I like Dr. Kimelman having been his patient under workers comp the past nine years. If you'll bother to listen, he'll educate you on the issues of dealing with the insurance companies and their rubber stamping denials which they the insurance company states in their own guidelines not to force a patient into withdrawals while under the care of opiates. Each and every time they've yanked the rug out from under me putting me through hell without out a backup plan or a system to ease one through the processes. There ought to be a way to severely penalize these types of actions. Back to Dr. Alan Kimelman. He will help you understand what's at stake and how you have to become your own advocate. There is so much wrong about the workers comp system and how the insurance companies have the upper hand when it comes to greasing the right palms. I've been seeing Dr. Kimelman for five years now, and I have never been happier with a doctor in a long time,mans do not state that unless they have surpassed the doctors I've had to deal with regarding my case for my fall. The doctor I had before Dr. Kimelman did nothing at all, recommended two procedure, and was guaranteed that these were going to make it all better, yada yada. Due to these failed procedures sent a red flag up and told me to get a lawyer, and I did, and Dr. Kimelman came highly recommended to me. Have never been happier. He has been able to get things moving on my case, and my case is very complex, and makes it harder to treat, but he's finally getting things done. LOVE his staff 100%!!!!! They are the most fantastic people, and you all have to remember he sees a great many people, five days a week,and not every case is a slam dunk. They are dealing with more than just your case, so, they can only get so much done, while working with your insurance company, and you dealing with both doctor and lawyer. Some times not everything works in your favor. Having the right lawyer and doctor makes all the difference too. Dr. Kimelman is one doctor that I would like in my corner. I'm writing this review as I felt the others were unfair. 1) dealing with Workman's Comp can often be seen as an adversarial situation, so many go in with a more confrontational mindset. 2) I adore my city, Vallejo, but 90 % of the Bay Area is afraid to get off the freeway to buy gas in Vallejo. Their loss. I appreciate anyone setting up a business here, and I think that sharing a parking lot with the Vallejo Police Community building would bring some security to visiting patients rather than a reason to complain. 3) I was able to get an appointment quickly for a nerve conductivity study ( this was done at the insistence of my workman's comp insurance carrier). The staff were very friendly, sharing pictures of children and just a very pleasant group. There was a very short wait in a pleasant, well-lit, and clean waiting area. I was shown back to a room for the testing. 4) the medical assistant was very friendly, but did have some trouble finding my nerves (not her fault, but my physiology). Dr Kimelman was called in to help, and I was very happy to see a doctor who worked with his assistant, rather than steamrolling over her. On questions of how to operate the testing equipment he had the confidence to ask the assistant, given she knew the equipment and he was more experienced with the body being tested. In that symbiotic interaction, I felt I received superior care. 5) When it was time for the part of the test that had to be done by a physician, I felt Dr. Kimelman was present in the room, and not just "rote testing". There was humor and a relaxed atmosphere. I get nothing for writing this review and it was the only appointment I had as he is not my ongoing treating physician. I write this only to present another angle on this doctor's office, personnel, and patient treatment. read more

I have been seeing Dr. Kimelman for almost ten (10) years at several locations. in reading the other reviews I have to admit that his offices have been kind of chaotic at times. His Novato office had several different receptionists that could be a bit snippy due to the number of patients he or other doctors he was partnered with were there at same time. Most (of my) appointments have been/are on a bi-monthly or weekly basis. Dr. Kimelman has had employees who were going to school or finishing and getting job experience. His team at the Vallejo location is efficient in getting the patients in and out. With the many changes to the WC system and trying to keep up on those changes, teaching employees and seeing patients during his work day, Dr. Kimelman is a very grounded in trying to help the patient. I had a back injury that required surgery and a 'repair' when a screw backed out of the fusion, and the repair was compounded by a serious infection to my back. All this was years before seeing Dr. Kimelman. I live in Santa Rosa, and when I moved to the area from San Diego I found a doctor who would take me as a patient. That doctor left his practice to do research, so I had to find another pain management doctor. That happened each year from 2005 to 2009 when that my insurance company sent me a letter to Dr. Kimelman or put my future medical treatment 'at risk'. I went to see Dr. Kimelman, as directed, not knowing he was a QME. Dr. Kimelman did the evaluation and sent a detailed report to WC insurance carrier (lifetime medical treatment was in my agreement) which is ignored now (2018) due to changes in the laws governing the WC system. Since the changes started, I have been to the ER for denial of medications all at once. The ER doctor called Dr. Kimelman and found that the insurance company was at fault and not me trying to 'doctor shop'. It took 2 years for the ER doctor to get paid, with me getting into the mix when I was sent to collections for the bill. Finally the bill got paid by insurance, but not before my credit was reduced. I have not had any problems with Dr. Kimelman nor any of his staff even though I have a significant amount of chronic pain. I have been going to a doctor for the last 21 years in some manner each month for the injury to my back. Dr. Kimelman is the ONLY doctor who has helped me in the WC system, continually pushing me to do things to make myself healthier and to deal with the issues in my WC case. With his main office location move to Vallejo, I was apprehensive about driving for an hour (or more) from Santa Rosa to go to the doctor, but because of his treatment and trying to help me navigate the continuing WC system and the insurance company representative stating that she "is not a doctor", and sends out a Utilization Review to some retired family doctor or non-specialist who denies or changes the dosage of a medication that Dr. Kimelman and I have titrated to a level that works for me without side effects. I have tried to keep the medications to a minimum since I do not like taking the drugs, but I have found Dr. Kimelman knowledgeable of different uses of medications helpful. Now due to the infinite wisdom of the WC lobbyists and $$ there is a formulary that allows only specific medications to be used for their original use, even though there is proof the medications work 'off use' and I have been taking them for years. But I digress... I think Dr. Kimelman is a very efficient doctor who is doing his best in a very complicated system that now is very adversarial to the patient. As far as 'scam' claims I have read in the comments, shame on you. Most likely the 'scam' was on the patient side and Dr. Kimelman saw through the patients 'story'. I would recommend Dr. Kimelman if you really want to get some sort of your life back, but not if your are trying for a free ride in the WC system. The police department parking lot is an issue and I did get a ticket parking in the disabled space EVEN with disabled plates on my car. They used some code that said you could not park on the property without written permission. I fought the ticket and got it dismissed by writing a letter with pictures of my car and location of signs, the one about parking was behind a screen when I parked for my appointment. The older 'officer' behind the counter inside has no people skills. read more

The Vallejo office is located in a trailer type of building which is scary because it doesn't seem permanent-as if they just get up and leave town once they're done scamming people lol. It's located in a corner of vallejo p.d. sub-station parking lot. You have to be a top notch driver to be able to squeeze into the cramped parking space. This is all too much for people who are dealing with a workers comp injury. The medical assistants walk and talk as if they are doctors, and give off the most snootiest vibe-very unprofessional and unkind. I feel so sorry for anyone they have scammed so far! If your looking for a physician for Pain Management ,DO NOT CHOOSE THIS OFFICE. The staff, Scott, who answers the phones & schedules will not ever allow you to speak with any of the staff. If you want answers to any type question you will not be allowed to speak to someone unless it is during the course of your appointment. Scott is rude and will not budge on helping any of the patients out.If your on disability be prepared to pay the office 35.00 every two months for a new form to be completed.I have been going to this office for over a year & have not been seen by the M.D. since around month 2 or 3, only seen by the NP.So if you want substandard service from an office who doesn't care about the patient, only the insurance money they can collect avoid choosing this practice. read more

Dr. Kimelman is a Physiatrist (not Psychiatrist). PHYSICAL MEDICINE.( I would give three and a half stars if I could figure out how to do the half star thing!) I saw him for a year and a half and he was one of the few physicians I have seen in my 25 plus years of the medical profession that listens to a patient. He actual listens and does not give the standard textbook doctor-type answers. He is very approachable, practical,and down to earth. I have had back surgery and problems with pain and he has helped me through it with ease as compared to two others who will remain nameless in Bay area that had treated me like I was either drug seeking or severely depressed ( I have been neither! ) I am not being sarcastic when I say that he gives common sense answers to medical questions and situations, where others are vague, disinterested, confusing, contradicting or have pre-formed opinions prior to the end of your sentence. I have been in medical profession (practicing for 12 years) and understand how many physicians think, and practice. He is excellent. If you are in pain, need physical rehabilitation, he is by far one of the best, if you can get in to see him. Unfortunately, much of his work is workman's compensation cases. And once a case is settled, believe me, you will know it They efficiently boot you out, and pronto! You do get this nice email though notifying you, to which I replied inquiring about continuing treatment with him, and I was told, it would have to be cash only, but not in San Francisco location, or any other location other than his main office in San Rafael. I guess my cash only works in the city of San Rafael! oh well, at least I got to see him for a short while,and receive his help for 18 months and really am grateful (but this cash thing, I need to look into, I didn't know cash had a greater value in the city of San Rafael!). I wish I could give no stars to this place. Stay away, very far away. I'm writing from the experience I've had with my husband going to this sham of a place. I think they take advantage of people on Workers Comp. I think this is one of those scam places that you see on 60 minutes and just takes advantage of the system. My husband saw the Dr 3-4 times over a 2 yr period. He had an appt every set every 2 weeks and only saw the nurse. They did nothing while he was there. It was just for billing. He had to make an appt to get them to request anything, even refilling a prescription. After 5 yrs my husband finally got surgery approved. We went for a follow up appointment to have his incision checked as the surgeon instructed 2 weeks after. That was the last time he was seen and it was just by the nurse. My husband found out later, when he started having pain that he had been dropped as a patient. He would need to sign up as a brand new patient and start their process all over again if he wanted to see them. Huh? Billing! It's a Chop Shop. In and out and bill insurance as much as they can without doing anything. Don't use them. Find someone else. My husband is still looking for a new Dr. He has no primary now and the surgeon has requested a mri, can't get one without the primary requesting. We are screwed, thanks a lot Kimelman! read more

I was so traumatized by the disrespectful and downright hostile attitude and treatment by the employees at the offices of Dr. Alan Kimelman. Their behavior led me to believe that there was something seriously wrong with this process, possibly something fraudulent. I was required to book a QME appt. within 60 days for my valid workman's comp. claim. The soonest appointment was 58 days from the day I called. I told her that I would be in Mexico that week but I booked the appt. and informed the adversarial party's adjuster of the day and time. I filled out the voluminous forms and enclosed medical attachments in a timely manner. I called to confirm my appointment on Thursday and informed the receptionist that I was in Mexico and it would be a long trek coming to the appointment. She informed me that I could not change the appointment and that I must show up. The office had sent me a letter stating that if I needed to call and change the appt. to call 3 days ahead or I would be charged a $1,000. fee. I called on Thursday, Friday, Monday and confirmed again on Tuesday by leaving messages to confirm that I was on my way driving from Monterrey, Mexico to Novato, CA to avoid the fee. Just minutes before my appt. at 1:00, the receptionist called my cell to tell me (in an extremely hostile manner, screaming at me) that my appointment had been canceled by "my adjuster" and it was not their duty to return my phone calls or to inform me of the cancellation and that I better not show up at the office...I was a block from the office so I told her that I would be coming by to retrieve the medical records I sent to them as they were required by CA State Law to give them to me. I am a licensed Health Insurance Agent and former Private Investigator with a degree in Administration of Justice and Law Enforcement who specialized in fraud cases. I don't have an adjuster, the adversarial party has and adjuster and he had never returned my phone calls but when he (mistakenly) answers the phone, he was hostile too telling me that it was required by the State to make an appt. for a Qualified Medical Examination (only 3 choices of doctors) and that I must have an interview with a Private Investigator to qualify for workman's comp. I complied with both. When I arrived at the office, the receptionist went to the door, locked it and let the dog out of the back room. I motioned that I needed to talk to her about getting a business card to show that I was there and that I needed my medical records. She angrily said that they were closed. I called 911 and asked for a CIVIL STANDBY because the ladies were all coming out of the back room to look at me and they all seemed very hostile. I needed my medical records! Another patient arrived and they let him in...I slipped in behind him, the receptionist called the police! I told her it was too late, I called them 20 minutes ago. When the officers arrived, the receptionist lied and lied to the officers. It was shocking to hear so many lies coming out of her mouth! She said that I was not a patient, I had no medical records in their office and that "her adjuster" canceled the appointment and he should have called me to inform me of the cancellation on Thursday. That was the day I spoke to the office and they told me that I had to show up, so I started driving from Mexico. She said that "Robin" had returned my call immediately to tell me that my appointment was canceled but she wouldn't say when. According to her, the adjuster canceled the appointment stating that I was "uncooperative and would not talk to the private investigator" which is another lie. I spoke with the Private Investigator for over 2 hours and gave a full report. When I got home, the next day, there was a letter in the mail stating that since my appointment was not canceled within the 7 day period as required (the letter states 3 days), then I owe them $1,000 cancellation fee. SCAMMERS! IT'S JUST ONE BIG MONEY SCAM on the insurance companies and the injured workers. It appears that they are just one big billing office with no waiting room and will do anything to get out of making a Qualified Medical Examination as required by the State of CA. read more

I wish I had read reviews before having neuro diagnostic exam by this dr. the worst ever! Iwas in so much pain when he stuck his cattle probe in my wrist, couldn't tolerate the test. He said reschedule. Mistakenly i did, after taking 2 norco for pain 1 hr prior to the test. After 5 min of cattle probing again, he stopped & wrote I was too "anxious." I wasn't anxious, I was in severe pain, you f quack! I'm in the medical profession & know how u should act. The other reviews are true also about some of the employees being rude. The 1st one, a female, very rude. The next guy, gay, was very nice. Stay away from this so called dr. Tell wc u prefer another! I would never go back to him. He needs to get another profession.Do not go thru this test, there are other methods to diagnose. The good report written are fake. They are literally fighting for patient rights daily, it was like pulling teeth to get authorized for an MRI and EMG, but someone at his office never gave up appealing denials from my carrier... just to get an authorization.... that means a lot. I received that authorization thank you, I'm no longer in the pain I had been in, and now I'm looking forward to getting better. The ladies at his office are unbelievable. Keep it up ladies... I regret giving Dr. Kimelman only one star. I was seen by Dr. Kimelman for my initial consultation, he was professional, kind and listened to me carefully. We decided on my course of treatment and I felt like I was in very good hands. My other visit was with his nurse practitioner. As I was sitting in their very tiny waiting room my name was called by a woman who gestured me back with a nod. Not a hello, how are you, my name is, I'm Dr. Kimelman's NP, nothing ! I'm not sure about anyone else but I like an introduction with whom I'm going to see. As I stepped into her office she asked me "How's it going"? I began to speak on how my medications were affecting me while she's reading a pamphlet. I stopped since I didn't feel she was listening, she looked at me and said, "keep going". I find it concerning when a patient speaks and no one is listening, she is extremely unprofessional, and rude. I have worked in the medical profession for several years knowing the importance of communication, bedside manner and treating patients with dignity. I could find better care seeing a Veterinarian! I asked if I would be seeing her on a regular basis or would I see Dr. Kimelman. Unfortunately, I would continue to be seen by her. It was my first and last visit. I have found Dr. Lee and am now being treated with compassion and dignity, a professional who is not a medication rep tool. I read the other patients Yelp review and I agree about the young man that sits at the desk, not very friendly. Dr. Kimelman is an incredible doctor. Anyone who knows the ins and outs of worker's compensation understands you must be an advocate for yourself. Dr. Kimelman provides the tools and guidance to help patients be their own advocate. He will go over treatment guidelines with you, showing you online resources. He will explain what the insurance carrier is looking for in order to authorize treatment. He takes time to listen. He can be blunt, but sometimes that's necessary. He is not just about prescribing medication. He really wants you to have a better life. His reports are more thorough than any other worker's comp doctor I have been to. There is a lot of back and forth with the insurance company and UR, but that's only because they try to deny everything they can. If you need a refill for medication, the office will not call it in for you, you must make an appointment. This is not their rules, it's because the worker's comp insurance carriers require new reports for every RFA (the form used to request the medication). The only way a new report can be written is if you come in to see the doctor. The office is in Vallejo, across the street from the ferry building, right next to a police depo. I admit, the office looks a bit like a mobile home on the outside, but is bolted to the ground on a slab foundation. The office has been completely redone on the inside and is a very functioning medical building. Previously, this building was used as a dental office. There is nothing shady or scary about the location or individuals managing the office. It's very busy and the waiting room can become over-crowded at times, and the staff is busy and not always personable. Overall, Dr. Kimelman is a great doctor. The worker's comp industry is a mess. He is not a scammer. He is trying to support a business in a system that makes you fight for every dime you get. It's no different for the doctors. read more
