We've been attempting to do a guys fishing trip every 5 years, but its been 6 years since our last…read moreweek long visit. The charter we usually go with had a break down, so he personally referred us to Kit, the Owner and Operator of Alaskan Dream Sportfishing. Working out of Knudson Cove (about a 24 minute drive from the downtown and the cruise ships), we were met exactly at 6:30am at the marina by his boat. Clean fishing boat that sat the 5 of us comfortably, with a big back deck to run around and fish off of. Also, there's an area to get out of the weather (wind, sun, rain) along with a toilet. We were taken on an hour and a half boat ride to who knows where, and as we approached the fishing grounds, we were greeted by pods of humpback whales and porpoises breaching at the surface. Kit set up the rods for each of us in under 5 minutes, and with in a matter of seconds, we were hooked into a silver and king salmon. Let's just say, he put us right on top of the fish!! Even with about 15+ lost fish, a couple of tangles, and broken rings on the hooks, Kit got our lines back in the water and kept us fishing, or in our case, catching! We hit our limits (30 salmon between the 5 of us) in an hour!! Then we took a short boat ride away and switch rods and set ups, and BOOOM! We were right ontop of the halibut now! We did have to battle a sea lion that gave us hell, but we were still able to land our limits of halibut. Made it back to the marina in the early afternoon, helped clean all of our fish, and then it was time for some cold beers with our Captain. This was THE BEST DAY of fishing we've all ever had! About Kit; Extremely professional! Felt like all of us were old friends, having a great time fishing and raggin' on each other, because thats what guys do. He did not show any signs of anger, frustration, or awkwardness our entire time with him. He continued to keep his composure and was a happy go lucky type of guy. His enthusiasm for fishing is infectious! He's a local family man, born and raised in Ketchikan and has always been on the water. I wanted them to see what Alaska fishing was like. BUT, we also had most of the group that had never seen Ketchikan. He assured me we were not too early in the season. We would catch fish. We did go for a long boat ride to get out to the fish. But we limited out in a matter of 20 minutes. Had some of our group not gotten sea sick, we could have stayed and fished longer. But I didn't think keeping them out any longer was a good idea. We headed back with three hours to spare so we could see the town! The van picks you up and drops you off at the cruise docks, so no worries about transportation. They were very conscientious about getting us back to the boat on time. The cannery was a cool and unique venue, which included snacks and drinks after the zodiac ride. They have all the equipment needed to stay warm and dry. Emily was extremely knowledgeable and personable, which made for a great experience. We saw eagles, seals, deer, and of course, stunning scenery. 10/10 would recommend this, it was one of the highlights of our Alaska trip.

Our cruise had canceled our Juneau port and so any helicopter tours there were cancelled, so we were pretty bummed and hoped that Ketchikan would be a little better when it came to getting on a helicopter. My husband booked the flight with the nicest woman over the phone who didn't make us feel pressured in any way. She was super informative and sweet. Our email told us to meet someone from the company near the bronze statue near berth 2, so we waited a few minutes and no one approached us and there wasn't anyone with a sign for the company, so we were a little confused at first. Eventually we were able to find the person picking us up and he was apologetic that he didn't have the sign on him, so no worries there. The tour headquarters is one of the comfiest places I've been, it was so welcoming and everyone is just so nice. We were given a safety demo and Ryan Maehs flew us in one of the cleanest helicopters I've ever seen. Ryan was super knowledgeable and took us to see great wildlife and even landed for about 20 or so minutes while we were able to put our feet in the water and enjoy Alaskan nature away from the crowds. After my husband enjoyed the excursions at the other two stops on the cruise, he asked if we could book something for our day in Ketchikan, hopefully a helicopter tour. So the night before we docked, I looked on Yelp and found Ketchikan Helicopters and explored their website for almost an hour. I emailed Ryan at Ketchikan Helicopters and he responded very quickly with all of the information I needed. When we pulled into port the next morning, I was able to call Ryan and finalize the details for our trip. Ryan made it extremely easy to find him when it came time for the tour. He was so welcoming and reassuring. And he went out of his way to build a rapport with our six-year-old son, who very quickly lost all anxiety about going up in a helicopter for the first time. My husband is retired from the Army and he immediately felt comfortable with the helicopter given it's immaculate condition, which helped me feel more relaxed. (I had never been on a helicopter, so I have no idea what a well-maintained helicopter looks like. My husband on the other hand has been on dozens and dozens of helicopters.) Ryan made sure we experienced everything we asked for with the tour. He was able to take us where we saw five black bears. He sat the helicopter down for 20 minutes and let us explore the terrain ourselves. (This was amazing! It was so beautiful. It gave us our first experience in Alaska where we were far removed from anyone, which is rare for people who tour Alaska by cruise, but is common for backpackers.) It was a long tour and we felt we really got our money's worth for the excursion. We felt safe with Ryan's decades of experience and his well-maintained helicopter. And the landscape he flew us over was breathtaking. Words and photos can't come close to doing it justice. What's really cool is that both my son and my husband say this way the highlight of the trip for them. I think that's a pretty good endorsement, given the six-year-old really enjoyed all Disney was offering on the ship and my husband had a trip to Alaska on his bucket list.. Everything about the helicopter tour was wonderful. It was very easy to book it, even with very short notice. Ryan was not only a skilled pilot, he was also very warm and informative. This park was covered as part of the tour we purchased onshore, I assume it's included as part of…read morethe cruise ship offered tours as well but it's always cheaper to buy a tour directly off the ship. Park is decent sized with several totem poles, a totem pole carving workshop, native clan houses, some vintage cars and a gift shop. Due to the abundant rain Ketchikan is blessed with, this park is covered in lush greenery. You definitely need a guide to help explain the history behind the totem poles, the clan houses and all the other stories. On the whole it will take less than an hour to cover the entire park. The gift store is great as well and surprisingly very reasonably priced compared to the other touristy places. They had several totem poles in various sizes on sale in addition to the regular tourist store items.

A potlatch is a ceremonial gathering, like a big party, and the clan's totem pole shows how many potlatches they have been involved with. Enjoyed seeing the small circular doors to the living quarters that would force any unwelcome visitors to stoop down to get through the opening - allowing them to be easily attacked. There is a large gift shop, and a clan house. We did not see any old cars but possibly our guide simply omitted that part of the tour. Those coming without a guide are at a bit of a disadvantage, as I could see no interpretive displays near the totem poles explaining what you were seeing. This is also a cruise ship destination and there were numerous cruise ship groups tramping through the park along with us, affecting the experience. Lots of delays as we had to wait for several groups to clear out before we could go onto the next part of the tour. The crowds also made taking photographs difficult.

The office and boats were right off the pier, super close to our ship, we could even see it from our balcony when we boarded our ship after the excursion. Keep in mind this is a FISHING excursion, not a boating excursion. Our captain Devon's job was to find us fish, and he did! We weren't sailing around looking at scenery, we were fishing! The only small thing I could say is that I wish Devon had given us clearer instructions as to what he needed us to do (stop reeling, back up, don't lift up when he geo the net ready) and we'd have hit our quota earlier. But maybe he was just checking out our skills first. haha. We had none! If I'm ever in Ketchikan again, and looking to go fishing, I would not hesitate to book Baranof and I'd refer them to anyone.

Captain Clay was great...kinda crabby, but knew where the fish were. ( JK! That was a joke from the…read moreboat, that he suggested we put that as a review.) My FIL booked 2 charters for various members of our family, so we all spent a lot of time ribbing and teasing each other and Clay joined right in. We had a lot of laughs in between catching fish - which actually wasn't much time, because when my husband, FIL, and I went out for our turn on the boat, we literally had no time between bites. I know this isn't the case for every charter - even Clay seemed surprised - but at one point all three of our lines were biting at the same time! We had halibut and cod coming in one after the other! My FIL threw back 2 halibut before he finally was satisfied with the 35" he pulled up. I even landed a shark, which apparently is nothing impressive to a "real" fisher but was a great time for me, lol. I've never sportfished before so I needed a lot of instruction, and Clay helped me each step of the way. We also got to see his eagle buddy, and a couple whales, and at the end a harbor seal! We had to end the charter early because we all caught our limit for halibut and crab in under three hours. We had some crab pots down and when we hauled those out, the bounty was overwhelming. As an ecologist, I really appreciated that Clay did everything by the book in returning undersized fish/crabs to the sea, and using a descending device for rockfish (which as non-residents we were not permitted to keep). Although we spent a most of the time on the deck hauling in fish, we did enjoy the very comfortable warm cabin (it's a bit chilly out here in early June). It was a great day and we'd recommend going with Clay to catch your fish in Ketchikan!
