Remember older libraries, with the Dewey Decimal system, looking up books' locations in the wooden pull-out card drawers, microfiche, etc? There was a very distinctive smell of old books there. It was a comforting smell to me). Not only is the smell in this shop familiar, but just wandering about and seeing older books from my youth is comforting as well. It's a total exercise in nostalgia. But don't get me wrong, this place has a humongous amount of contemporary novels, too; my kid perused the floor to ceiling stacks and stacks of Grisham and Kellerman novels and those from other prolific mystery authors. Most of these novels cost about $6 and most were in very good shape. They also have tons of nonfiction books, local history books, crafting and cookbooks, and more. I also liked how they had carousels of postcards and local greeting cards for sale, too. The only reason I'm not giving this store five stars is because the gentleman working here didn't greet us or ask us if we needed help finding anything or even look at us. We felt ignored. The man was chatting with another man who was standing in the doorway; it sounded like they were friends. There was no-one else in the store. My kid and I kinda felt invisible. But hey, we still had fun browsing the shelves of books regardless (and I thought it charming in a way that this is such a close-knit neighborhood here that these older gentlemen were chummy).

The staff are wonderful. You get the community feel here. In a town like this with so many tourists it is a vital to balance community and the tourist trade. They succeed and work out the alchemy of both without losing their identity.

They have an eclectic selection with a great emphasis on Canadian writers and a really fun kids section if you have little ones (or want to be the "cool" but still educational Aunt). But perhaps my favourite part of this place is that they mix literary themed gifts in with the novels & picture books. Last time I was in, a dragon puppets from Puff The Magic Dragon was tugging on my nostalgic heart strings so strongly, I'm amazed I walked out empty handed. Well first off, their staff picks section is a gold mine. Seriously. Every time I poke my head in the door I could easily take the entire four shelves of staff picks happily home with me. Second - they are organizational wizards. Their expansive fiction section is alphabetized to perfection, poetry is broken down by region, photography by subject, hobbies by... well hobbies. This two story building is a prime example of the right way to use a label maker. Thirdly - they have an excellent eye for rare and eccentric oldies. I will be honest, I am not the most astute when it comes to limited edition novellas but the section front and centre when you walk through the door boasts everything from full edition encyclopedias, to hard cover, leather bound copies of Gatsby, and on occasion, 50's smut... hellooo peek of a garter! Behave you! It's a playground of eye candy and definitely worth the shuffle through. Lastly, the prices are fantastic. Sure, the aren't the rock bottom prices you can find at some used book haunts but for the quality and condition of the books, it can't be beat - a hard copy version of the complete Maus series? $20. Thankfully there are still 1 or 2 bookstores in beautiful White Rock. Yesterday, my stroll took me to Black Bond Books situated in Semiahmoo Mall. They have a great selection of books from best sellers to kids to history to cooking and the list goes on. They also sell a good variety of calendars along with a small selection of toys. The staff always greet their customers and make them feel welcome. If you don't see it on the shelves, they are more than happy to order it for you. After enjoying myself just strolling the aisles, I left with a book I've been looking forward to reading. With every book purchase, they always include a bookmark (no dog-eared books for me). They accept cash, credit and debit. There is parking in the mall parking lot. If you love to read as much as I do or have a reader in your life that you want to shop for, I highly recommend Black Bond Books.

I LOVE books and I LOVE to read. I am sad that the eReader is taking away from real books even…read morethough I have one. I always stop at a book store when I am by one. So I was out this way and I had to go look in. I am used to large selection even at the local Black Bond but this place didn't really have much. Could be that it was a small location but it just felt lacking. The customer service was the good part of my experience here. Since I rarely get out this way I will more than likely never be back.
