My kitchen counter is proudly displaying a big bowl of micro-green radish sprouts & I feel healthier every time I look at them! But Boric also has: a fresh fish counter, butchery, deli, icecream by the scoop, coffee, homemade cakes, dinners & salads, a kids' playground AND a boutique selection of homewares & the finest artisan products. And friendly staff. And a great wine, beer & cider selection. And I've probably missed something out. This is the kind of place that you could easily wander around for ages, progressively filling up that trolley more & more. I can see that will quickly become my new hobby!

Nowadays, it's my go to for my weekly fruit and vege shop. Not only is everything seasonal but it's also great quality and cheaper than most supermarkets. That's a win win in my book. In particular, the asian vegetables, flowers and strawberries (when in season of course) are brilliant! The market does tend to get a bit crowded at 9:30am so get in early to get the best of the bunch. Oh, and don't forget to try the pork buns and the mussel fritters - they are the perfect Sunday morning snack!

Other treats I have to mention is the Old man with the glasses and the deep voice who has a stall that sells the best chili tomato sauce, and whole grain mustard labelled Jolly Chef Products- a must visit for the home chef. They even have a stall of my favorite ever peanut butter Pic's if you haven't tried this made in Nelson delight please indulge it wont let you down. Parking was an issue. Great variety of vendors. My first day in NZ (flew in overnight) and when I passed the donut vendor, she was taking pictures of her wares and I remarked, what a good idea, they're lovely and I took a picture too, and slavered over them a bit more, but thought about the calories and started to move on, and an old man called me out saying you shouldn't take a picture unless you're going to buy something. I wasn't sure how to respond, but the vendor was super nice and said no worries. So, the picture is attached here to make you salivate too! :-)

Luckily, most of the stores are undercover so we weren't troubled although anyone buying fresh fruit or veggies today would not need to rinse them as this stall is located on the market's edge. We came specifically for a breakfast catch up and shared a delicious bacon & egg gap, a chai from Cosset and some oh so sugary and delicious donuts from Scratch Bakers. Other treats on offer included bagels from Toasty Bagels paired with salads from a Deli stand, pies at scratch bakers and coffee & smoothies from Sprout, which is the permanent cafe on site. Shopping options included fresh & smoked seafoods, cured meats from Salash Delicatessen and some of the freshest fruits & veggies I've seen in a while. With Miss Maggies dog treats on sale and the lovely La Femme Fleur flower truck on site, the Mt Albert market has everything you need on Saturday morning, except the newspaper. Wish I lived closer!

The ethnic diversity of food here is also great, everything from pancakes to octopus balls. There is an Argentinian man who sells fantastic food, his pita bread are out of this world. He gets up at 5am in the morning to make them. Maybe it is the love he puts into making the bread or the wood fire oven, but they taste fantastic. All his food is vegetarian and most is also vegan. You feel good about buying food from here because it is fresh, preservative free and to varying degrees good for you. Pukeko bakery has freshly baked artisan breads and Philippes brings the pastries. The bagels are good too, plus you can get two bags for $6 which is cheap. There are fresh fruits and vegetables too and the stall that makes fresh juice is pretty good, you can smell the wheatgrass from a mile away. Kokako also have a coffee cart so you can get a decent coffee at the market to go with your breakfast and then sit and enjoy it on the lawn or on the benches within The Pavilions. My only complaint would be the live entertainment, give it a miss I say.

As I can't possibly cook a meal without adding some spices I frequently visit Ted, the Jolly Chef. His stand is just behind Burger King and he has been selling his jolly products at this very market for 16 odd years already. In fact, he only sells his various herbs, spices, chutneys and mustards in Takapuna and nowhere else. His 85 years don't stop him from pitching up his stand every Sunday before 6am - in fact, coming to the market is a hobby for him and he prepares and fills all the jars at his home in Northcote. You will find pretty much every spice you can think of at a cost that's well below any supermarket produce. Ted's mixed herbs and paprika spice up pretty much all of my dishes and if I can ever convince anyone to tuck into some German-style sauerkraut with me Ted's juniper berries won't be missing. Predominantly the 'Avondale Market' is inundated with great produce at very affordable prices - everything from Chinese Veggies, Shiitake mushrooms & seasonal fruit. It was a difficult task to find decent coffee and/or healthy food. Lots of donuts, hot chips and handmade cakes; but no sushi? The parking is insane, nothing available in Rosebank Rd, so just park in the side streets. There is so much (variety) on sale including bric-a-brac, garden utensils, washing powder, CDs, children's toys - literally everything in your house! Well worth a visit.
