I loved the holes that had contraptions to bring your golf ball up to a higher level. And the final hole ball-return had me staring in awe like a little kid. Has two 18 hole courses - East and West spread over four sections of land. For tournaments only one main section is used - making up the Composite Course. The West Course is definitely superior, has most of the holes of the composite layout and the front nine of the West has a stretch of five or six holes that are world class. Noted for its large bunkers and fast greens it is a masterwork of noted course design legend Dr Alistair McKenzie. Interstate or overseas players may be able to get a round with a letter of introduction from their club - sent well ahead of time. The course is well-treed but maintains something of a links feel as it is built on ancient sand-dunes that are now well inland. I was a caddy at Royal Melbourne for four years but actually rate Kingston Heath and Barnbougle Dunes as better course designs overall (and The Dunes at Rye remains my favourite all time course).

The course is fantastic. Always in immaculate condition and the greens must rate amongst the nations very best. Beautiful bunkering and great design in that every hole presents s different challenge. Not only is it hard in terms of keeping the ball on the…read morefairway - it is also hard to find a course that is public and you don't have to book well in advance. Enter Royal Park - 9 hole golf course. Royal Park definitely isn't your top of the range golf course. But this is the exact reason why it is so great. For beginners it is far more forgiving than most courses, having many short holes and not too many things like sand bunkers and narrow fairways. You also aren't required to book days in advance here. Sure some days (i.e. mild sunny days) it does pack out, but they are usually happy to squeeze you in somehow. The fees are reasonable at $15 for 9 holes or $19 for 18 holes. Being a public course it can be frustrating at times with a high likelihood of getting stuck behind a beginner or some such. But as long as you remember that Golf is a game best taken slow it shouldn't bother you too much. Royal Park really is the ideal course to go have a round if you haven't organized anything in advance or can't be bothered driving out to one of the less central locations most where most golf courses are situated. They also have a car park out back if you are looking to get the full Tiger Woods experience.
