This regulatory body is pretty much a bunch of dealers regulating other dealers. What could go wrong? Like the Better Business Bureau (BBB), AMVIC, the Alberta Motor Vehicle Industry Council, purports to be a champion of consumer rights, protecting car owners from incompetent and unscrupulous repair shops, of which there are a number in Calgary. But that is just a front. They are worse than the BBB, which at least pretends to listen and treats your complaint as a misunderstanding to be mediated, followed by a whitewash of the complaint for public consumption. In practice, AMVIC is paid by member repair shops to defend them against bothersome customers like you, because you are so unreasonable and dumb about cars. When you report that greasy repair shop to AMVIC, they will automatically leap to the defence of that paying member, before actually hearing your full story. You will then be accused of being insensitive, predatory even, and scolded for protecting your own interests. How selfish of you. Don't you know? These poor auto mechanics need to make a living somehow. Needless to say, that unethical automobile repair shop will continue to shaft your neighbours, no record of their misdeeds being available to warn them. They will, that is, unless your neighbours also read YELP. read more

This council is obviously some sort of joke. I registered a complaint against Sunridge Nissan in Calgary, Alberta, hoping that the council would help me with their unfair practices. (I was sold a used vehicle with a mechanical inspection report that failed to identify a number of serious mechanical problems a blind man would have noticed.) The council just sent me a form letter in response to my complaint, stating that they couldn't help because there was no violation of the Fair Trading Act. I haven't read the act, but apparently it is acceptable for a car dealership to sell a consumer a vehicle with a false mechanical report. Ridiculous. If you run into issues with a car dealership, don't even waste the electrons to send the council a complaint. They probably just have one guy there who sends an auto-reply form letter to your email address to reject your complaint. read more

If I could give them zero stars I would. I had a complaint that I was grossly overcharged by almost $10 000, possibly given the wrong vehicle as the model was different on the bill of sale than the one I received, and the fact the vehicle I received doesn't have any of the features the dealership said it would or for what I paid for. Also the fact that my vehicle was a rent-a-car which the dealership did not disclose with me. AMVIC lied and said the dealership didn't know it was a rental unit when I had other dealerships show me their own car proof saying that the original dealership I bought it from 100% knew it was a previous rental and that information should have been explained. I had gone to various other dealerships who told me the original dealership had extremely screwed me over and has a history of doing so to young women who go in alone . After filing a complaint, in VERY little time I received an email back saying they have no grounds for an investigation. When i looked at their "know your rights" and "unfair treatment" page on THEIR WEBSITE, I gathered evidence on my own and evidence provided from other dealerships that there definitely is in fact need for an investigation. When I called with my evidence I barely got past stating my name before I was cut off and totally disrespected by their employee. She basically refused to put me through to her supervisor after I had asked her to and talked to me like I was stupid when I was nothing but respectful over the phone and in my emails. When I actually had the chance to speak and explain my evidence and finally got through proving my points how they aren't doing their job as a consumer protection agency, she essentially told me her supervisor would call me back... I have yet to receive a phonecall. I definitely recommend contacting your local MLA seeing as AMVIC has had several lawsuits against them for this exact reason. This place is a joke and not worth anyone's time and frustration. read more

This place is a joke, a agency created by the government for morons who can't get a job elsewhere. I filed a complaint against Country Hills Hyundai about not refunding my deposit 2 hours after, I left the dealership, without any work being done to the vehicle or me taking the vehicle with me. Amvic sided with Country hills Hyundai and said there was nothing they could do. The Lady I was dealing with Leisha, was a moron and said she wouldn't call Jared as he had just come back from holidays and didn't want to bother him!! Who cares that I got ripped off for $2000.00, as long as this so called agency can stay on the good side of these corrupt car dealerships, I wouldn't waste me time dealing with these idiots! read more

I had a terrific experience with AMVIC. An unscrupulous dealer in Calgary tried to keep a $1000 deposit of mine when clearly they were not meeting the terms of our agreement. I appealed to the dealership, whose manager scoffed at the idea I could go to AMVIC. "They'll just take our side," he told me. AMVIC got me my money back from them the day after I sent in my complaint. They also offered frank advice. Very happy with my experience. read more

My fiance and I went to auto dealer to lease a vehicle in early November. We were not provided with enough detailed information for the leasing. We were told a deposit was need to proceed with the leasing application and they will be fully refunded. At the end of the day, we decided not to proceed with the leasing and advise the dealer through their sale person that we were no longer interesting to proceed with the leasing. The dealer inform us that we had agreed to proceed with the purchase of the vehicle. We were not satisfied with their intent and complain to the vehicle manufacturer. The manufacturer advised us they can not interfere with the operation of the dealer. They advised us that we can take our complaint to AMVIC and they can deal with this issue. We contacted AMVIC and got nothing but excellent service. They took our complaint and within a month and inform us that the dealer will return our deposit in full. We had nothing but great appreciation for their service. We highly recommend anyone who had problem with vehicle dealer that they should contact AMVIC immediately. read more
