Upon arrival we were greeted by some peacocks and saw some emus! We then started in the natural history museum where there was every taxidermied creature imaginable! There were animals literally everywhere, as well as ancient artifacts. Then we were given lanterns went outside and entered the mammoth cave. It's about 40 degrees so we were glad we brought sweatshirts. The cave was huge and took about 30 minutes to get through, a really neat experience.

We started our visit at the Visitor Center where we saw is a :30 video providing the history of the site & history of Executive Order 9066 which authorized the incarceration. Rangers started our tour at a relief model of the camp during the war when over 30,000 were incarcerated. We visited the in ground storage, sparse cramped restored barracks, latrine, mess hall & restored baseball field. The Visitor Center has many displays & artifacts describing the history of the war, incarceration, and Minidoka. There is also an honor roll listing volunteers that filled the ranks of the infamous Combat Team & Military Intelligence Service. I was surprised how emotional I became looking at the site, the number of Japanese here & the sparse, rough terrain. Volunteer Parc Rangers here are granddaughters of those that survived these camps.

There were benches & markers…read more In 1974, Evil Knievel tried & failed to leap across this mile-wide chasm of the Snake River Canyon west of Shoshone Falls on his engineered rocket motorcycle. His parachute prematurely deployed as the Skycycle left the launching rail but winds caused him to drift into the canyon. At the bottom, he landed near the water. If he landed in the water, he probably would have drowned, due to a jumpsuit/harness malfunction the kept him strapped in the vehicle. Surprisingly, he survived the jump with minor injuries. At the city's visitors center, Knievel's supporters erected a monument to their hero with a carved likeness of the rocket motorcycle. It's engraved, "Robert 'Evel' Knievel: Explorer, Motorcyclist, and Daredevil. Attempted a mile-long leap of the Snake River Canyon on September 8, 1974 employing a unique Skycycle. The large dirt ramp is visible appox. 2 miles east of this point on the south ridge of the canyon. Donated to the community by Sunset Memorial." The mound of his jump is from the marker.

After further inspection we realize this limestone arch is millions of years old created from waves crashing on the rock from the Great Salt Lake. It is named for recognizing all the Chinese who helped with the transcontinental railroad. Pictures don't do it justice. It is over six fr tall. While taking photos we even saw a pack of deer watching us. Very cool.

We made a trip from Hawaii to Salt Lake City specifically to visit the Idaho Potato Museum (long…read morestory). Drove almost 4 hours to get there and then another 3+ hours to Boise to visit friends and flew home from there. Was it worth it? Well, we actually had a really great time! There was enough to keep us interested for a couple hours. Typical museum displays were supported by videos, some talking potatoes, even a cute Virtual Reality Tractor and some video games. After we went through the exhibits, we ended at the cafe and got a baked potato and some fries. You can have anything you want on them, so we got chili and cheese, sour cream, and bacon. The only sad part was that they were out of gnocchi. Lots of parking and there are some shops in the area. So, yes, we're really glad we went and recommend it if you're in the area.

First off, this was my wife's idea!…read more I mean, when you're driving through the middle of BFE, Idaho, and you see a sign for a potato museum, you usually just keep on driving, right? Well, not this time! All jokes aside, this was a fun little wayside distraction, tucked away "in the back" of Blackfoot, but worth it for the kitsch and novelty of the whole thing. Our kids certainly loved it, particularly the potato family projection in the "basement" that narrates the harvesting and storing of potatoes; our three year old couldn't stop staring and laughing! In additions to displays, videos and dioramas detailing every potato fact you might ever want to know (and more), there's also a quaint little café at the back purveying all manner of potato products, from fries and other fried things, to the good ol' Irish Sundae (a baked 'tater dressed just how you like it), so you can get your carb load for the day in whatever form you desire! Admission is cheap (a few bucks per person), and a great way to kill some time, or break up the monotony of a road trip.
