Tapas are not particularly memorable but dirt cheap... all under €2.00. Go for the feeling of timelessness, the bullfight photos, the oldtimers chatting at the bar. Great place.

Chicken was very flavorful. The kabob was flavorful but a little dry. The kabob was also a little small, even for a tapa. Next we had a couple of other varieties of Sherry and a delicious cheese plate. We had a great time here just chatting, snacking and enjoying the beautiful light in this restored gem. We continually commented on how well done the building renovation had been done. A really gorgeous job of accentuating the past while keeping some clean modernity. Excellent service. One star deducted for a lack of a wine list and some minor missteps on the tapas. What gives!? Dozens of wines and no list? We will probably be back tomorrow after our Sherry tour.

We arrived late - about 4pm - which is pushing it for service at lunchtime. But they agreed to feed us if we ordered quickly. Random frenzied menu stabbing produced: - tempura prawn kebabs with a salmorejo of avocado and sherry - a pastel of ortiguillas with a mushroom sauce (sea anenome : see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ortiguillas) - revueltos con bacalao (scrambled eggs with cod) and caramelised onions on top. - berenjenas with salmorejo (aubergines with a tomato sauce) Everything was incredible. We tried to reorder - but the kitchen had closed. Met the chef as we were leaving - and told him our error ... he was full of praise for the place next door - we were full of praise for his brilliant cooking. I've eaten quite a lot in Cadiz and Jerez in the last couple of years. For Tapas - this was something special, and perhaps some of the most interesting and well prepared food I have tasted in this part of the world.

While taking a tour of the Lustau winery, our guide mentioned a long list of places we should see on our short trip in Jerez. At the top of his list was el Tabanco el Pasaje. In fact, he recommended we go there because not only do they have their own barrels, one of them contains Boatina. It's a sherry you can't find in the US. Sold! Seeing that we traveled all the way to Southern Spain to actually drink sherry and visit wineries, this sounded like the perfect bar to relax in at the end of the day. Especially because we could try sherries that we simply haven't ever had at home. The barman (who was the same each visit) was really kind and helpful. He was always talking to locals but would pause them politely, step away, and take our order. Just $1.50 for a pour! We tried Botaina (yum!) we had Amontillados, we had Palo Cortados, we had it all. And each time it was $1.50 and each time he stepped away to pour a big tall pour into a little sherry glass straight form a drippy, sticky, gorgeous barrel. And don't forget the little tapas! With your order of sherry he slides a basket of little mini bread pieces your way. They're like teeny tiny baguettes the perfect size for a mouse, but crunchy and hard like salad croutons. The bar also had lots of old photos, maps, and nostalgic items along the walls. There were posters and banners of famous people, of flamenco dancers, bullfighters, and more. It was as 'Jerez' as it gets. Truly traditional! No English, no menu, no fuss. In fact, I'm trying to recall if they even had spirits for sale. I think it was only sherry but they have 6 or so barrels in the main bar and even more around the bar. Lots to choose from. And if you don't like sherry, why on earth are you in Jerez?! After you get your order you can stand at the bar, grab a table, or wrap around to the other side and sit in a little cubby area with even more stored sherry barrels. Each time we came we tried something new and each time we came we sat somewhere new. I loved the little low tables and the low stools to sit on. It was almost kid-sized furniture. It was cute, it was comfy and it was super casual. Since it's a local pub and most of the patrons were men, I was a little weary of the shared restroom. Turns out it was super clean! Yay for that! Some nights there's flamenco performances, other nights they close. We weren't sure if they have regular business hours or if they shut down when it's quiet and they want to go home. Either way we loved it and when we come back to Jerez this will be our first and last stop of the trip. Highly recommend that people come here for a local, friendly sherry experience. Oh! And free WIFI!

Excellent excellent excellent…read more As soon as you walk in, the wonderful smell of Jerez just hits you. You're standing in a warehouse full of barrels and the feel of the place is very energizing. Tours cluster around the 10-2:30 timeframe M-F. Check the website (English) for details. One negative is that the tour goes a little faster than I would have liked and I was struggling to understand the complicated Sherry-making process as the tour guide explained the next step or moved on to something else. The tasting is nice. You get a good half hour to taste 3 Sherries (one dry, one medium sweet and one sweet) at some benches in the bodega. A good time to relax, rest, and chat (meet the other tourists at your table too). Take your time. this stuff is strong. After the second tasting, my mom even plucked up the courage to whip out her German on the German tour group seated next to us. We skipped the "tapas" add-on. It was just some meats and cheeses and didn't look all that special. I also suggest buying something at the gift shop if you have any doubt (the prices of the Jerez are great here). We flew up to Barcelona after Sevilla and couldnt find much Jerez at all (definitely not the ones we tasted at Sandeman). Left Spain disappointed that we couldnt bring a bottle home with us.

We happened to find Casa Nicolas in Plaza del Banco, just off the pedestrian mall. After a terrific sangria with fresh melon towering above the glass and topped with a little umbrella we were starting to feel better. We shared the Chicken Amontillado, which was a half chicken, covered in bay leaves, peppercorns, onions, and who knows what else, swimming in a sherry sauce, and served with the best homemade steak fries we've ever had. It was outstanding. We sopped up every last drop of the sauce, nibbled away every last bit of chicken, fought over the last, fried potato, and had some terrific red wine to end the meal. We were stuffed. Would highly recommend a stop by. We had breakfast here the next morning, one of the best we had in Spain. And then another dinner, but sadly, we were too late for the Chicken Amonitillado--the last dish had been sold. We suffered through with some wonderful artichoke hearts and a pork dish. We highly recommend Casa Nicolas.

This one in particular had some great decor and is in a beautiful location--at the foot of an old church. We had just stuffed our faces at Arboles around the corner, so we snuck in here for a post-meal drink. The square had outdoor seating seemingly shared by a few restaurants. We sat inside tho, next to a window, and sipped on our beverages (beer for me, wine for she) while chatting and watching to town walk by. Kids ran back and forth across the square, racing each other. Parents consumed their meals, taking bites in between conversation. No phone or tablet screens within sight. As it should be. High school looking kids hurried by, all dressed up, perhaps heading to a dance. We finished our drinks and headed out to further explore the nearby neighborhoods. 5 euros for 2 drinks and a great memory. What a deal.
