I've been coming to Alchemy Arts for about a decade now and have developed a report with the beloved Freida. The variety of supplies and diversity of metaphysical merchandise makes Alchemy Arts unrivaled as a Chicago majik book and supply store. Unexpected new items make each trip an adventure. Over the years my favorite bath salts, oils, incenses and candles remain available like the decorative fixtures that compliment the enchanting ambiance. The only downfall is Alchemy Arts has become so patronized I often have to put in an order or wait a week to obtain items I could buy in bulk during any walk in years ago. Still I am happy my favorite merchants are receiving the prosperity a genuine practitioner manifests, and I can appreciate the increase in African practitioners of Vodun, a heritage long rejected by its own ascendants. This is a review for online orders- I haven't been to the physical location but I'd love to check it out. I ordered a bunch of herbs via their website, and paid with Paypal. The total wound up being a few dollars less than the original website estimate, maybe due to lighter items costing less to ship? The items arrived extremely quickly (just a few days after I ordered, I think!) and were packaged well, and seem to be really great quality. They even included a note. I really enjoyed this place during my last trip. They have a great selection of oils, candles, incense, herbs, and other paraphernalia. I was able to pick up some abramelin oil. I was very impressed by their selection of books. It wasn't your typical new age fluff that you see at lot of these types of stores. They had a lot of Stephen Skinner and even a copy of David Griffin's out of print book on Golden Dawn. So I can tell that the folks here have good taste and know what's up. I recommend this place for those pursuing the Great Work. I will be sure to be back to visit during my annual pilgrimage to Chicago this year for Cold Waves Industrial Festival. read more

Best spiritual supply store in the city by far! Alchemy Arts has it all - variety, price and quality. The owner is what one refers to as "a character." He's been around the block, but keeps a good sense of humor and genuine concern for his customers. He is also extremely knowledgeable - if he doesn't know it off the top of his head, he knows what book it's in. If he doesn't know what book it's in, he knows who to call. Speaking of the customers, most of them are are pretty cool people too and striking up a conversation with them at one of the many events held at the store is as much fun as it is enlightening. While a lot of the goods may be similar to other shops around the city, Alchemy tends to offer a much higher quality than the others - try finding another store that sells lavender that is actually lavender colored. Even the candles that have the same silk-screened scenes burn better than some of the others I've sen around the city. Even though the quality is much higher than some other places, the prices are still in line. And the cats - there are two of them and they've perfected the good cop bad cop thing. My best friend introduced me to this place and I've been hooked ever since! They have a huge selection of books, incense, candles, oils and trinkets. The owner is extremely helpful and he keeps his cats in the shop and they are very friendly! They have information on every religion you can think of! Also, he makes all of the oils and stuff so it is legit and real. They also will ship items to you if you cant come or live too far away. You don't find many family owned occult shops that do that! Such an amazing store with good energy and caring, empathetic employees. I explained my needs to the gentleman who runs the store and he made so many amazing suggestions before even suggesting I buy something. I had went to On The Rocks in Andersonville before him and had a very bad experience with employees who were not helpful and didn't know their products. He went through each of the items this store sold me (In hindsight, I wish I would have bought them from him). He went way beyond what I expected and left feeling so much better. This is the only metaphysical store I've found in Chicago that truly cares about it's customers and providing knowledgable service. read more

Reading the reviews, I wonder how people get banned? Is it because they ask stupid questions? Do they just look annoying?? I would love to know so I can avoid it cuz I'm really liking this shop. The man that was there was very nice and let me have a complimentary quartz. Kewl. I stopped in here and it was quiet, just me. I got what I was looking for and found some even more useful items I could stop by for in the near future, without trekking all over to collect items I needed. Very nice selection of candles, herbs and incense. Ooo and they sell dried sage here! That would have been SO useful last year when I was trying to banish bad vibes, ghosts.. whatever that was, that called out my name my first night there, knocked on my door and shut doors to mess with me. ew. All items I looked at are very reasonably priced. I think I looked at all corners of the shop, except for the books. My herb was so foul smelling and pungent that while walking around the store, I was wondering ew what is that awful smell??? Someone did not bathe. like in the crotch department. (I know I was clean, I tested for STD's recently) and I didn't smell this in my car earlier! ugh, what is it?? Best store in the universe!!!! I could spend hours (which I have on several different occasions reading esoteric books) and the owner of the shop is so wise, compassionate, and empathetic. I am sooo grateful to find this shop, with the wonderful folks who work here to make it that much more profoundly meaningful, it makes me feel at home. Finding medicinal herbs, candles and incense that is therapeutic and healing has been immensely wonderful for me and I'm sure many others who find comfort and peace because this store exists. I am a regular customer of Alchemy Arts and the stuff works. I usually purchase the baths and incense and they bring money, health, or love as prescribed. I love Frieda the shop cat and the owners, Ken and Maria, have rescued cats over the years and have had high vet bills. My money spent there helps support them and cover the costs of the animals which is why I don't mind spending there. read more

The store is stocked full of really interesting books and titles, some that I thought were out of print. However, sometimes I have to wonder about the owner. What does he really practice or believe in? He's pretty vague about his own personal beliefs, and just talks a lot about "energy". What type of "energy" does the guy believe in or pray to or work with? I know he's an ex-Catholic, and he's also a Republican, but that's really all I know about the guy. Sure would be nice if he opened up more to his customers and really discussed his beliefs with them. read more

This is "The Occult Shop" (not to be confused with any of that name) in chicago. The store owner is very knoledgable about many forms of paganism and the occult arts. The inventory is extensive and authentic. In addition to herbs, candles, books, Incense, and other items they are now stocking Wands, Pentacles and Runic tools made by a local artist/practisioner. for those of us who are walking the walk in the occult this is the place to find the supplies and networking we need. if your looking for new age fru fru $#% you might try somewhere else though because the owner opperator is very serious about the craft and will tell you the same thing. read more
