We went in on a Wednesday and it was pretty much full; pretty surprising considering the place had only been open for 6 weeks. Tables at the front were a little windy with the window wide open; in the back it's way better. We enjoyed a broad sampling of the menu. Courses are intended to be shared. We tried 9 courses between the 3 of us. For starters we had oysters and delicious bread; then came the first set of mains, including scallops with enoki mushrooms (divine), quail (meat excellent, stuffing meh), and the portobello shrooms (not so interesting). Our second set of mains consisted of delicious octopus, smoked lamb neck with pine nuts and mint (delish), and the whole leek which also was very good. We fished off with a sorbet that had great mixes of sweet, salty & sour. All good is prepared on a wood fire. It's served beautifully by friendly and informed servers. The place is not overly formal (servers wear jeans) but certainly not casual. Overall it was great. Only negative was that the sauces with the meat felt a little one dimensional (dark, a little sweet). Bill came to ~$75 per person (excluding wine), reasonable for 9 shared courses.

It was served in a nice little cup which matched the theme of the place very well. My biggest reason for a 4 and not a 5 was the atmosphere which I found was too formal-dining-esque to really work for a weekend morning brunch. I'm not sure whether it was the lighting, the awkward pop music playing in the background, or the lack of natural light...but I really think it needs something to switch the ambience. Probably consult an interior designer instead of me, but I think some light-hearted jazz music with some plants/flowers wouldn't go astray. The host retrieved us from the podium and proceeded to take us to what we thought was going to be our table. She took us through the establishment outside on the deck to a counter overlooking the water. She said she was sorry but this is all they had, what was I to say at that point? I was speechless. To order we had to scan our cell phones for a menu and if we wanted food, they said we had to walk inside and order it and then come back out to our counter style seating. I was very disappointed. We ended up not even eating. We did end up having one glass of wine, one Pinot Grigio one Sauvignon Blanc.. Our drinks were delivered to us by a young boy, and he proceeded to set the glasses on the countertop. I asked him which one was the Sauvignon Blanc, and which one was the Pinot Grigio. He stood there and stared at the two glasses he had in his hand and stated "I have no idea" again, I was speechless. What am I to say at that point? Very inexperienced hostess, drink delivery person. It was extremely noisy. Music was too loud. Music is great but there's a decibel that it shouldn't go over. You couldn't even hear yourself talking. It was so loud and we were outside. 'Light Space' offers a refreshing change to this with its minimalist industrial chic design, high ceilings and modern architecture. Situated in the Valley (on the border of Newstead), it is also an easy location to get to. I came here for the UQ Architecture 2011 exhibition and was impressed at how fitting of a venue this place was for it. The space was divided in 2 large rooms, one loungy room with a wide bar and the other area was as the exhibition space. The white walls and bright lighting really worked well in showcasing the 80+ student works that were being presented. Overall, this was an ideal place to fit all student works plus accommodate to the 200-300 people that attended the event. The size of the bar is very wide, which is practical when serving a large group of people thirsty for some free booze. The decor and layout of 'Light Space' makes the place very versatile. I can imagine it would be a great place to host a wedding or large party. The high ceilings, white walls and amount of space would make this a great place to shoot audiovisual material in. If you have a medium-large sized function/exhibition/party to organise, or need a studio space for a photo shoot, you might want to look into hosting it at Light Space.

By virtue of seeing the pre-event organisation on the day I sense this is a tightly run ship and for personal events like weddings and such, this is what you want. There's plenty of scope to create the style and atmosphere you want in the area with two large hall-like spaces. There's office space above that is used by an ecclectic group of creative businesses including photographers, a media agency, architect and online fashion store. And as a little tid bit; there's also a bee hive on the roof by Bee One Third. Nifty huh?
