We came around 9pm so the live music ended and there was a DJ- little loud if you're wanting to enjoy a cocktail with friends it almost turned into like a club too early. My advice is come during live music since it's nice for a group of people but anytime after that is strictly for party time. Popped in with my wife while exploring the downtown area. It's been probably 30 years since I visited Mobile. Interesting little place with a wide selection of bourbons and gins. Leon was working behind the bar. Though not talkative he was friendly and personable. I ordered a Blanton's Manhattan and my wife a whiskey sour. I was surprised at the moderate price for the Blantons Manhattan. If we weren't driving so far, I probably would've had three! :-) There seemed to be a pool room in the back and live music upstairs? The bald karaoke dude was such an ahole. One guy there was yelling Roll Tide and he came and got in his face. In town to visit a friend I stopped in at the first bar I saw but it was more of a dive bar and empty so I asked the bartender if there was a place to get a good cocktail or a nice selection of whiskies. She recommended Alchemy Tavern and said to ask for her friend Tiger who works there. Walking over a couple of blocks we found the place and Tiger was the bartender on duty. She was incredibly friendly and immediately struck up a conversation with me and my buddy. I ordered an Old Fashion to start off with and Tiger served me a good one, nothing muddled and not too sweet. Tiger went on to let us know how she came to be in Mobile and about some of the local attractions. She made some recommendations on some local beers and special reserve whiskies which we tried and lived up to the hype. My husband and I have visited twice. The first time was filled with many 20 somethings and had karaoke. The karaoke was fun to watch. The bartenders were indifferent as far as service goes. We ordered a beer and were served in plastic solo cups. The second visit was part of a prohibition history tour of Mobile. It was interesting to see the architecture and learn the history of the building. It was used as a speak easy and place for running numbers during that time. The bartender was supposed to have a drink to match our tour. However, a fill-in bartender was on site and could only make a rum and coke. It tasted of bottom shelf dirty rum and watered down. It was interesting to visit from a historical perspective. This may be a good bar for the younger crowd to hang out and have fun. For us (40), not so much. read more

I've been here a few times and there is definitely a 'clique' of local regulars (which most bars always have). No biggie... Now as far as service goes, that all depends on who is behind the bar. One bartender is truly interested in your service, your likes, and offers several suggestions. On a different night, the bartender could care less if there is anyone in there and was consistently on their phone. I like tech as much as the next person, but work is work and we all have to do our job. The prices are a bit high compared to different bars in the area. On a Monday night, the bar was occupied by what appeared to be maybe 5 "regulars" and 2 "bar staff" the entire group used profanity loudly and relentless. Not sure I have heard the "f-word" so frequent. The topic..."crackheads and homeless". The consensus of the group was how they were a blight on society and do not deserve to live. Don't go here if you're from out of town. The staff was rude and had a 'you're not one of us' vibe, and we found out at the end of the night that they charged us $16 per shot of whiskey for whiskey that costs $34 a bottle. When we asked why we were charged so much, the bartender started talking about New Yorkers and how high their rent is and threatened us and told us it's a 'good idea' if you leave. We happened upon this place by accident. We were staying a couple blocks away and were told that Dauphin St. is the place to go for drinks; the Alchemy Tavern is block off of Dauphin and right across the street from the Saenger Theater. Initially we walked right by the place and didn't even notice but on the way back to the hotel we stopped in and I'm glad we did. This place made the trip to Mobile worth it. The bartender Zach, was knowledgeable and friendly. They have a great selection of beers, including many from the region; my favorite was the Brother Joseph. For $5 you could go to the comedy showcase they were having in the back part of the bar and it was well worth the money. They had 4 comedians, some local and a couple from New Orleans. All 4 made me laugh at some point in their act. If you're in the area, save yourself the time and go to this place first, it's the best bar in the Dauphin District from what I experienced. read more

I WONT be returning. The bartender named "Beau" that was there on May 26th was very rude and wouldn't serve me after one drink. He looked at me and said " if your not going to tip me I won't serve you, I don't serve broke boys." This was after I bought one vodka and sprite for $4 bucks. (Which was shitty) If you want me to be completely honest I think it was because I'm black. Little did he know I was about to tip him. After that statement I got up and left. All of this is my opinion and personal experience. The service is good along with the beer selection. But the karaoke seems so fucking loud to the point where your ears hurt. You cannot even hear the person next to you and I had to scream my order to the bartender. Hipster as hell...and I like it. I don't identify myself as hipster but I enjoy their take on drinking establishments. Rustic yet refined. Savvy bartenders, usually folicaly festooned. Strong pours and just enough pretension to make you think you're better than the people who don't like it. This is my definition of "hipster as hell". This place fits the bill. Alchemy is my favorite bar downtown. If you are looking for a cool place to chill, or dance, or karaoke, or see live music, or not have smoke in your face while sitting at the bar, this is the place to be. Not to mention they have some phenomenal drink specials, and a vast array of beers and liquor. Now the bar tender you get depends on the night you go and if you are upstairs or downstairs. But most of them have a pretty set schedule, and each has their own specialty. Friday and Saturday nights are my favorite because I love Amanda and Jeremy! They always help me make a great decision and will make me something adventuresk if I ask. They can make some killer cocktails. Wednesday night, and a couple others, Steven will be your bartender and I assure you will have fun with him especially if you play his trivia. Upstairs you have Sergio, Colins, and... oh I forgot the third guys name. All are great. The shows are upstairs so it can get a little loud. But you can always escape downstairs or take a step out on the balcony if need be. If you like karaoke, you will have plenty of opportunity here. I think they have it every Friday. But you can get it Saturday if you have a big party coming. Just ask before hand and buy lots of alcohol. This will easily become your home bar, or just a great experience while you are visiting. If I could give it no star I would. We had a great night until a barback or bartender (tall skinny guy with medium length hair) decided to kick out the birthday boy (a marine). He said our friend destroyed the skee ball cage on the machine upstairs when the machine was actually already broken. We had been playing for hours and noticed it as soon as we got there. Without warning, he told him to close his tab and agressively pushed on him as he guided him down the stairs to the door. He then proceeded to pick an argument with our friend outside of the bar. It was extremely rude and unprofessional. I've worked in bars, we were not being disruptive, stupid or destructive. Unfortunately, this took our night from a 10 to 1. What a horrible experience! Me and my coworkers from out of town, party of 12 came here tonight to let our friend sing karaoke as he is a professional singer. He put in the song he wanted to sing and we waited for his turn. The DJ kept hogging the karaoke as someone has failed to tell the DJ and the guy in dreds they can not sing at all! The bar owner should not allow them to sing. Tone deaf at its finest! He also kept letting his friends sing over and over who were all horrible. We all got tired of waiting and was getting bored so we started cheering for our friend to let him sing. The DJ said over the microphone to stop cheering that he was going to make us wait longer. Super rude! Finally our friend got to sing and it was amazing, the whole bar was cheering except for the DJ and his friends that obviously acted as though they were jealous and told every to calm down over the microphone as it clearly bothered him that the entire bar was cheering for our friend and not him and his friends. This is absolutely ridiculous, I will never bring anyone back to this bar again and I will tell everyone I know not to go to this bar until this DJ is removed. Never heard of a negative person allowed to be a DJ at a bar. This guy clearly has social issues as the bar is turning into a crowd from loserville. Do not go to this bar!! read more

It is already a great bar to hang out at, with a pool table in the front, and a long bar that serves tons of bottle beers, draft beers, cocktails, and also has something like 80 types of whiskey available for your drinking pleasure. (Hint - they keep a lot of it in the back so ask for your favorite even if you don't see it). But after they complete the remaining construction, there will be a back room and an outdoor patio with an outdoor bar, as well as an upstairs "lounge" area for you sophisticates. I visited the Alchemy Tavern to get a beer or two after a job visit to Mobile. They have alot of microbreweries on tap. I tried a 51 and a Painted Black from Fairhope Brewery and they were both very good. The problem is that I was hungry and they offer no food service, just drinks. The barkeeps were friendly, talkative guys that kept my glass full. They play a jazzy musical background that is not in my listening circle but it seemed to set a mellow mood.
