I went in the other day looking for a pair of scissors, I had second thoughts when I saw the two huge queues, literally 10-15 people deep. But I figured hey I'll give it a shot. Unfortunately, after walking up and down all the maddeningly organised aisles and thinking I might have found a section where such items belonged I didn't find any scissors! So then I had to embarrassingly shove my way past all those people in the queue. Why? Because these lovely discount shops have a maddening system that tries to prevent you from leaving without purchasing something! That said it definitely had a lot more variety and a bit more freshness and cleanliness to it than Aldi across the street, but overall I'm still not totally convinced about these shops (I think it has to do with the fact that they don't actually take the food out of the cardboard boxes they come in - like Hello! rat feces from the factories!), but if you're on a tight budget and you want a bit of a choice then you can't really go wrong here. The only thing that I have no qualms about buying here is the cheap booze, nothing says classy party like a couple of boxes of wine!

Yes, I occasionally shop here, but I avoid it when possible. The Lidl in Clonee is handy enough, in that there's an Aldi just a few meters away. You can get twice the misery with minimal effort - I like that, if I'm going to suffer it may as well be convenient. It's a decent sized Lidl and it has the a good variety, plus the bits and bobs advertised in the weekly. It's also sterile and unfriendly. I've been here quite a few times. I keep to myself and I don't ask questions nor for help. That said, I have ears and the staff here are just generally unfriendly. Most look miserable. The first time I came to this Lidl it was about 6:30 on a Sunday. They close at 7. I was standing in the queue when an older couple entered. This German employee ran up to them and told them they'd have to leave, because the store is closed. But it wasn't closed. The doors were not even locked or shut, it was 5 to 7. They protested, saying they just wanted a two bottles of wine and it wasn't even 7. The employee became unusually hostile, yet relented with a stern and contrary face. She warned them that they were only allowed these two bottles and then they'd have to leave, they could not grab anything else. I saw them take the bottles and go to the queue. Bizarre. In this economy, you'd do well to encourage people to shop. But then this is Lidl after all. Today, the entrance door security alarm was broken and kept alerting a non-existent person back to the cashier. I could see a man try to fix it, failed, and then subsequently gave up. So the entire time shopping you could hear this siren followed by recorded instructions. I also dislike how there are barriers across the unused checkout queues. I can understand the necessity for anti-shoplifting, but the barriers are ridiculous. If you opt not to buy something, there's no easy way out of this store. Your only option is to slide past people in the queue, which can be quite awkward as you'll notice most of the shoppers queuing are actually using their designated space. Another particularly annoying element about this Lidl is that the only trolly rack is by the door. So after you take your goods to the parking lot, which isn't miles away, you then have to trek back to the door. Now, that might seem like a lazy complaint , and in many ways it is, but it does tend to rain in this country and it's just an unnecessary annoyance. Why not have a trolly rank somewhere convenient? Will I go back? Probably not for awhile. It's a shoddy experience and their prices just aren't cheap enough to entice me to suffer through it.

We all know the score, its cheap (not always great). If you look around and dig deep you can get some good stuff, their fruit and veg is improving and lets no forget their Sunday specials, its Thursday for Lidl. Its cheap as chips and the Rathmines store is handy if a little small, has mostly groceries not like the bigger stores out in the burbs doesn't have 8 man tents and hi tech medical equipment. But still good for the weekly shop.

The bread, the food, the alcohol, the toys, etc. how much cheaper everything was! I was in there for about an hour and could not believe that here in America we spend so much more on food than what is really needed. The convenience of having so many grocery stores everywhere was also great. What was interesting is that you walk through a barrier with a security guard do your shopping, and then you go to an automated checkout. To walk out of the barrier you have to scan your receipt. It's pretty convenient and I see now here in America Safeway specially in some areas they have come to the same exact process. Well, I walked in there to get coffee, I ended up getting a baguette cheese, meat, cream, cream cheese, coffee, smoked salmon, and a few other items and let me tell you it was delicious. The workers there are not that friendly, and if you want to buy alcohol, you have to do it at 10:30 AM. The store was very clean compared to some stores here in America and there was a lot to choose from.

It's overwhelming with it's utter boredom inducing factor coupled with precise functionality that only the German's can do so well. There is no music. There is food. There is a check out. You check in and shudder at the other dour faces in the jaundice light. Observed from behind a two way mirror adding to the tense paranoid atmosphere which you are willing to endure for their uber cheap goods. Going to Lidl in the Dolphin's Barn added a bit more colour to what should have been a very grey bland experience. I decided to liven it up by coming to a place that is interspersed with sirens and menacing looks. As I left to drive home, I realised that I was in the wrong lane; common enough mistake. I just indicated to move in, normally people let you in. Not here. This granddad for lack of a better word decided to do a race off with me thus forcing me to stay in lane, as he sped in his vehicle that really was no competition to mine, his fat little grand child in the back seat starting giving me the fingers as they hi-fived each other. Ah Dublin, what a mix of folks coexist here. I gave the the little girl the finger back which I am not proud of but hey you gotta look tough round those parts.

It's very handy from my house and it has FREE underground parking. My favourite part of Lidl is the aisle of "the week specials", I normally spent a while browsing and almost always i get something. Garden, Kitchen, Baking, Sport, Car, anything goes. The food quality vs prices is pretty good (as all Lidl supermarkets). I always get surprise at the check out as it is normally cheaper than expected. The staff sometimes could be a bit more friendly but I think it is definitely improving.

Also, never witnessed any dodgy activities and edgy security guards like in other locations. They brought in a new range of plant-based milks, and a lot of "foodie" options, like really nice wholegrain and seeds toasts. So right now, other than good cleaning products and specific toiletries, Aldi caters for almost all my grocery needs.
