Friends we dined with asked what we'd been doing so far in Lisbon and we asked the same of them…read more El Corte Inglés wasn't just on their recommended list; It also came to me in a text message the following day, reminding me that I should go there. Wow. Amongst the things I didn't even know that I was pining away for, add an 8-story+ department store that is everything to everyone. We entered in a very high-end part of the store featuring all the luxury brands one knows then descended to a food court and movie theaters. From there, I moved on to explore the amazing lower-level supermarket before leaving there and strolling into the beauty/pharmacy department filled with products that both are and aren't available in the US. I took the escalator up, eyeballing what each floor held before disembarking at a floor featuring home furnishings, electronics, housewares, and Christmas decor then got together with my friends for a drink at a wine bar on the top floor. Someone else could write a book on all I likely missed here but what I saw guaranteed that from here on I'll be searching for El Corte Inglése in every place I travel. If you think it's odd to have a department store on your must-see list in Lisbon it's clear that you've not yet been to El Corte Inglés.

It's…read moreunassuming from the front, but once enter, you discover a modern bright shopping mall inside. To be completely transparent, I only stopped in to use the restroom. I really didn't do any shopping here. It was fun to walk through and see the lights and lovely holiday decorations. (And a tip - if you need a restroom - here's a spot.) But what makes this place special are the holiday lights on the exterior. They have a lovely light and music display that runs at certain times (not sure how often), which passersby stop by and watch. It's really fun to watch. We came upon it by accident, but so glad we did. So for me, the fun is in people watching, and the decor outside. For shopping in Lisbon - you may find what you need here, but you may also really enjoy stopping in the many shops on the streets.

Armazéns do Chiado is a shopping centre within the city centre of Lisbon, although quite small…read morecompared to European / US standards, it is still quite an impressive building and the opening hours until 11 PM remain useful for shopping into the evening. There aren't a great deal of stores here, the total on the website states 50, and that felt accurate based on my experience. Some international brands which have stores here include Kiko Milano and Sephora, Mango, Tommy Jeans, and The Body Shop. There are multiple options for food and drink including large American chains such as McDonald's and Starbucks. There is some seating around the small, again which is handy if you're looking to sit down while shopping, or walking around the city, without heading into a cafe/restaurant. 3* - Certainly dwarfed by the Colombo Shopping Centre which is further out, but the best out of limited options if you're looking for a mall in central Lisbon, it is an impressive building and the Starbucks / McDonald's are particularly useful in this location.
