What happened Alexander's? I used to enjoy coming here for date night. The food was fine, although it never did fit the price point. But what made it stand out was the ambience. It was gorgeous with the all white decor. I keep trying but it's getting worse and worse. The food execution was always a bit... clumsy, too heavy handed with the oil, lacking finesse in the flavour profile. But the ambience made it worthwhile. But now... this last visit the pesto based pasta was basically a pesto salad. I had to fish for noodles between mouthfuls of pesto. The beet salad was still good but not the same quality as dishes like the Burrata and Prosciutto Salad they used to offer. The previous visit the pasta was drowning in oil. The main dish arrived before the salad. The server said sorry but didn't do anything about it. I would have expected her to take the pasta back and bring a fresh plate after we'd received and maybe even finished our salad. We had to eat our meal backwards. Fail on both food and service side. And now the ambience can no longer make up for it. Some of the white seats are ripped and haven't been fixed over multiple visits. It's looking run down. I definitely don't recommend it, given there are places in the area with much more refined food that are charging the same. I hate writing this review because I was there when Alexander's opened originally and I really liked it. So I write this in the hopes management is reading. You need to do better. Fix the downhill slide of the food quality. It was awful. Take pride in what you offer, finer dining means if the main comes out first the server takes it back of their own accord. And fix the ripped benches. read more

The 5 stars is only cause of how much I loved the food! Service was 4/5 - started out strong but then slowed down towards the end. Parking is very difficult. They have a very small lot that was full when my husband and I got there. We had to park a couple blocks away and walk over. I made reservations ahead of time so we were immediately sat when we got there but I heard them telling someone without a reservation that there was a 2 hour wait. The ambiance is dark. The lighting is very dim and they have candles on all the tables. This spot is great for a date. They have a great deal on certain dishes on Tuesdays. My husband and I went on a Tuesday and we shared the following and we both thought everything tasted amazing: - Soup of the Day: Minestrone - House Baked Buttered Garlic Bread - Cured Meat of the Day, Peppers, Olives & Crostini - Chicken Piccata - Vodka Baked Bolognese - Gelato Cookie Sandwich Hands down the best minestrone I've ever had. It came out super hot and the flavor was so good. Made me feel like every other minestrone I've ever had was watered down. The Chicken Piccata was very lemony in the best way. Came to dinner here are 5:30 on a Wednesday, the restaurant wasn't crazy busy. Our waiter was extremely kind and helpful and gave us recommendations. We ordered the baked Brie (5 Stars!!) as well as the spicy ceasar was okay, kind of soggy but had good flavor (3 stars). We also got an order of minestrone soup, honestly best I've ever had (5 Stars). For our mains we shared the pink penne and the lasagna. My brother and mother say that it's the best lasagna they have ever had, I thought it was alright definitely on the good side (4 Stars). In my opinion the pink pasta was the star of the show although my family would disagree (5 stars). It was very discouraging to see that this restaurant already had a line outside before they even open. And the parking situation is pretty bad. They have about 4 parking spots and 2 handicaps and it's almost impossible to find parking. They don't have any system about the waiting lines, and they seem pretty unorganized. People waiting in line are very rude, so I would highly suggest for them to fix this issue that's creating people to get upset over their spots in "line" Our server (I can't remember if his name was Kyle or Tyler) went above and beyond!! I am so bummed they sold out to the TikTok hype and gave up on quality. We sat at our table for 10 minutes before any of the 8 people working greeted us or filled our water glasses. You have a choice of 4 pastas, 4 sauces, 4 protein and can add vegetables. Cheap prices with an elegant dining experience. The pasta was great. They have 2 menus one for $5 build your own pasta and another for the regular dining menu. I enjoyed the rigatoni with pesto cream sauce and it was fabulous. We arrived around 3:45pm, which was earlier than I'd liked. The line started to buildup around 4:30pm. We were to be seated right at opening on the patio. We did not have a reservation and were initially told it was a 30 minute wait but ended up being about 5 minutes for a 2 person table. They have a bench outside for seating to wait while your party is called. They have pasta night on Tuesday with a special for $8 pastas, however that only includes the pasta and marinara sauce and anything extra like cheese,veggies, proteins, or other sauces are extra. I have been coming here since 2012 and have probably been here at least 30-40 times all these years. The last time I came was the last day they offered the original Pizza Monday deal that included White Room, Theodore's Fix, 38 Special, Stevie Nicks, and Cherry Bomb (although I missed the Blondie from years ago as well) before they switched to the current menu. To me this was the best pizza in SD due to the Monday special but also just how soft the crust was and all the ingredients mixed together. The ones with the garlic were so amazing and arugala also brought them to another level. Each one really excelled in being different with quality and uniqueness with every bite. It was always a special treat and occasion to try to come here every week and I always looked forward to bringing people who had never been. I know things started to change once they stopped giving the free bread but at this point if the pizza is gonna be overcooked and hard I don't know if I will be coming here or recommending it again with the way the menu has been slashed as well. I understand it may be due to economic factors and they need to survive. Overall I never tried the Pasta night so I may update this based on how that goes but I probably won't be coming on a Monday again given how the quality of the pizza has declined and menu change. Honestly the Round Table in Tierrasanta Monday deal is even better at this point. *Update I was able to get a reservation which seems hard to get for Pasta night and for $5 ok wine and $15.95 for the 3 predetermined pastas it was really good! For the choose your own ingredient past the one I created ended up being $30 which is totally not worth compared to what you can get at similar restaurants not far off for equal or less. I would update this to a 3.5 star but there is no option, but if I am ever able to get another reservation for a Pasta Tuesday again I would come here for that, definitely not for Pizza Monday ever again. This place did not meet my expectations. The decor is nice and appears more upscale. A wonderful setting for a date or special occasion. The outdoor area had pretty string lights, heat lamps, and movies playing on a projector. Service began well. I ordered the baked pasta. My group of 7 people in total ordered two pastas, 2 pizzas and an appetizer. Unfortunately I am not exaggerating by saying our food took 65 minutes to arrive. We sat at 700, ordered at 730, and the food came at 835. This felt terribly long, but at least the server could have told us it would be out soon. I was unimpressed by the wait & it was not crowded on this weekday. After we ate, it did also seem to take a while for us to get the check. In total, two movies had begun & finished (Alice in Wonderland & The Breakfast Club) upon our visit. In regards to the food, my pasta was a generous portion. Though I really felt it lacked flavor like any spices, salt, etc. I would have rather cooked this at home. On the plus side, I did like the servers personality and was trying to make conversation in the beginning. Prices are average, about $30 per entree. Parking will be on the street. The white sauce it came with had a consistency similar to milk, it was very off putting. Our waitress was Jennifer, after we had ordered it took her 45 minutes to come and check in on us. It was ridiculous, I wanted to ask for oil and vinegar to eat with the bread but by the time she came to check on us we had finished the bread already! I think she just completely forgot about us because she only came back to our table after another waiter said something to her. However, my family member has ordered the lasagna and it didn't come in with the other food because Jennifer said she would go back and get it, then it took her about 15 minutes to bring back the lasagna! My partner and I had such an amazing time at Alexander's for dinner recently. This restaurant is a gem. The owner comes from a family of foodies and is the son of restaurateurs who have owned Old Venice and Cafe Venice Italian Restaurants in Point Loma, for decades. So, this was the dream of Alex Walter who after spending time as a dishwasher, then waiter and line cook created, after traveling the better part of Europe to hone his wine skills. You can tell, because [prior to selling to a restaurant group four years ago] when you dined there, Alex would often visit your table, offer wine selection suggestions and pour healthy samples for you to try. When you dine at Alexander's you get the same personal feel and touch that Alex established at this beautiful trattoria. Just like Old Venice, the interior is clad in white, white marble and fresh flowers. Candelabras with fast melting candlesticks, it is tastefully elegant here. We ordered the stuffed mushrooms that had a delectable crab filling and cheese + herbs, next the pizza we ordered came out with the perfect char with artichokes and pepperoncini. The pizza was amazing. Upon or server's suggestion, we chose a red and one white bottle of wine. They were both amazing: served at the proper temperature with the white kept in a wine cooler and the red at perfect cellar temperature. The service here has always been ten-star. One of the star of the night might actually be the bruschetta. Wow, so amazing with marinated organic tomato, basil, and enough garlic with a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil. [Another reviewer gave a negative review for the bruschetta where not only did he not describe it well but showed no photos= none. Just another complainer. Tuesday pasta night is worth the hype. They were incredibly busy Tuesday night and there was a line even before opening. There was still opportunity for walk-ins but they were given a hard time limit on how long they could stay. Thankfully I nabbed the last reservation the day of. Before being seated, we were given a chose of pasta night or dine in menu. We were seated outside and each table had a respective heater. The back was illuminated by the string lights along the wall and candles on the tables. There was even a projector playing a movie in the background. Our server was great and the food does take some time to come out so it's best to place everything at once. The pasta started at $8 and came with either marinara or meat sauce. Besides the pasta, the appetizers, salads and wines were additionally marked down. *Red Wine: wine was $5 a glass and I chose the Cabernet over the Pinot Noir. *Bruschetta: came with 3 pieces and topped with tomato, basil, balsamic reduction and parmesan cheese. The crostinis were nicely toasted and crunchy and were my favorite part. The tomatoes were fresh but the seasoning was on the lighter side, would have liked a heavier application of garlic and balsamic reduction. *Rustic Salad: the greens were crisp and clean. Once again the balsamic vinaigrette was applied lightly. The figs were mildly sweet and offered more of a chewy texture than any notable taste. The caramelized walnuts were a bit powdery and not my favorite. The blue cheese had savory and creamy with the slightest of funk. *Pasta: I chose bowtie as the shape and meat sauce. The portion size was massive and filling. The pasta was a bit softer than what I prefer but it wasn't mushy. As for the sauce, I didn't have any visible meat but the flavor was well rendered. The vibrant red worried me as some sauces are too acidic but this was bright yet savory. *Creme Brulee: the custard unfortunately wasn't properly set. However the custard had the richest vanilla flavor. The hardened sugar was the right thickness and this would be my favorite rendition of creme brulee if the texture was correct. Great taste and portion sizes for the price. Definitely will return for their specials. The warmth inside and outside makes this ideal for date night. read more

I ordered the shrimp scampi with mushrooms and loved it as well. My date ordered the cappellini Pomodoro and was really happy with his choice. They asked if he wanted to add a protein to his, but he opted not to. The food came out piping hot and delicious. We also got the walnut chocolate chip cookie with vanilla gelato. If wanting to go on a Tuesday for their pasta and movie night, strongly recommend reservations. We arrived at opening and had a 2 hour wait and about halfway through our wait they began turning people away without reservations. I personally liked the vodka rigatoni bolognese more because it was saucier and more flavorful. The shrimp lemon ricotta rigatoni seemed a bit too dry, shrimp was cooked well but quality was okay, and sauce broke so I found this dish to be mediocrely executed since I could barely taste the refreshing lemon notes.
