Although this isn't my local bakery, I often end up here to sample some of their delicious pastries. The pies, sausage rolls and pasties are so soft and delicate yet so tasty. Filled with fresh vegetables rather than frozen fillings, you can taste the difference. They have a variety of gourmet pies for just a whisker under $5. One of my favorites is the steak and Shiraz pie. The pastry they bake is flaky but at the same time is no too thin or thick. Unlike other bakeries, the pastries (in particular pies) do not fall apart from a heavy filling. This is good as it avoids ending up with an embarrassing mess. Definitely worth a try. Can certainly give most bakeries a run for its money.

Toff, Cara and the staff at the Home Grain Bakery have perfected the art of the perfect pie! During my time in Adelaide I must have sampled nearly every "Pie of the Month" and my usual favourite "Beef and Green Peppercorn" which has won the best pie award on numerous occasions. This is my favourite as it is simply delicious. I have never had a chunkier pie! Please open a pie shop in Sydney - as I know you'd do well. I also frequented usually on Saturday mornings so that I could sample the breakfast pie range as well. If I wanted a the 'Bacon Brekky Pie', I needed to be down at the bakery early, because they usually sell out by mid morning. If this pie sells out don't fret because there is usually a Spinach and Mushroom Pie still available. Both breakfast pies are the best I have ever tasted and so much better than a quiche! In addition there are many Vegetarian pie/ pastie options. If you'd like to be temped with some sweet choices - there are lots of Jam Berliners, Finger Buns, Vanilla Slices (Yum), Beerenberg Kitchener Bun,Croissants and donuts. Freshly baked bread loaves are also displayed in the bakery window. Too much choice to choose from. I complement my meals with locally roasted Villere coffee made on the Ruggero Espresso machine. The best coffee 'Down South'! All coffees are served with a little moon shortbread made exclusively by Margaret -Toff's Nan- for the bakery. These should also be packaged for sale as they are delicious. Every time I visit Adelaide - I have to come back for one of Home Grain Bakery's Pies.

We chose this winery not because we had heard of it, or for its reputation but because I tend to just make a selection on a whim and go with it. I was not disappointed. When you drive off of the road onto the dusty gravel drive and follow this to the tin building at the end, you would be forgiven for thinking this is a poky little place with little to offer. Think again. From the moment you step inside it is crystal clear that a great deal of thought has been put into it. It is simple, but very warm and friendly. It is very rustic, but welcoming and family friendly. This isn't a winery where your ignorance of wine is dismissed or where you are made to feel as though you should know more than you do. We sampled around 9 or 10 wines whilst at Mount Jagged, and the selection was very varied. They produce Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay and there was a real cross section available to taste, catering for all of the different palates of my party. In addition, there are tables and chairs inside and out, sign fantastic views. And for those visiting with children, a fantastic children's corner to keep the little ones busy while we sampled their wares. As if this was my good enough, the staff are very welcoming and very engaging, showing a lot of interest in our children, offering them juice and spending a lot of time with us to explain the wines each in detail. This is a great little winery…read more Super basic and rustic in its decor and presentation. The cellar door is literally a tin shed which displays its own special charm on entry, not contributed least of all to by the view. The green rolling hills covered in vines with a well appointed dam just to the left work their immediate winery magic on me. The sparklings are of particular note and if you enjoy a medium bodied red you will likely find something here to appeal to your palette. I love trying reds such as those from the cool climate vineyards of Mount Jagged which are so different in character to the highly commercialised and popular Barossa and McLaren Vale offerings typical in South Australia. Their whites were not for me with some pleasant food wines, including grape varieties such as sem, sauv and chardonnay which for the most part displayed distinctive mineral characteristics. The liberal use of french oak may also be of interest to certain connoiseurs. Me - I just like to pick a glass and enjoy the scenery!

What is not to love about a winery in winter that has a wood fire going??…read more Upon entry we were greeted by the cellar door staff who apologized that the fire was not as warm as it should be, he didnt force us to have a tasting but more so just let us be as we walked around and just took in the place and the scenery. There is a lot art work around the place which you can wander through in your own time. The wine selection is nice and the staff are knowledgeable about the varieties. I did enjoy these wine more so a few years ago but in saying that you cant go past a glass (or bottle!) of Church Block. They have cheese and crackers for purchase if you want to have more than just a tasting where you can sit inside next to the fire or outside. They also have a box of toys in the cellar door corner to keep little people entertained.

Stand underneath a vine covered verandah quaffing and having a chin wag with Amanda and Glen (the winemaker himself) about their unusual varieties of wines for Australia. Italian grapes like Mataro, Fiano and Vermentino are used to create wines that will impress your friends at BBQ's and dinners in the future. Like the Roses commercial, if you're asked not to bring a thing, a Ducks In A Row wine will help you say "we spent some money on this," and "we are a quirky and hip couple" who now knows what a Fiano grape tastes like - of course darling! Amanda and Glen open their cellar door when they are not busy (which is quite often) so it is worth a phone call before making the 40 minute drive. Also keep a look out for their pop-up events they run too, including a Vintage Celebration during vintage which had a vintage clothes pop up at it or their afternoon of Elbow Room popup stall and wine tastings. I AM IN LOVE WITH EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS PLACE!!!…read more At first our little group were worried that we were lost, or about to enter the scene of our own personal version of Wolf Creek as we entered a dry paddock, but the lovely Amanda came out to greet us and show us the way and we soon stepped in to an oasis - her own back yard! We were also greeted by Roger, the friendly Golden Retriever whom we all wanted to take home with us! Ducks in a row is open by appointment only and our group of 24 were very lucky to be told all about some wonderful wines by Amanda and Glen while we nibbled on our own picnic lunch - which we brought, but the team helped by providing some utensils we forgot - so thanks guys!!! The wines pleased everyone in our group - and there were some real wine snobs amongst us! Many a bottle was purchased over the course of the visit and I'll be recommending Ducks in Row - the wine and the winery to all my friends!

The wines are good. Nothing here is (currently) spectacular and worth the trip in its own right but there's a nice young Sav Blanc that's fresh and very drinkable. The Rose and bubbles both surprise and the reds are pretty tidy too: a pinot with a little something to it and a Cab and Shiraz that you wouldn't kick out of bed for farting. They are all approachable and the heavier reds could probably lay down for a few years before coming out to play. The prices are good too $16 - $20 for all wines is a palatable deal. If you buy a case you get two bottles free....so that's just what I did. Now, the other thing to mention are the two cottages to stay at on the property which are great. Very quiet, clean and spacious, ample kitchen space with everything you could need to make a meal or just to prepare a snack. An outdoor patio and big bbq to enjoy. There are two bedrooms and a lovely big bathroom with soaker tub (love the jets!). So, come down, buy some wines and stay the night, it's a lovely getaway.

Three cheers for Three Monkeys…read more Under the relatively new helm of Frieda (ex Flying Fish at Pt Elliot way back and now embarking on her own business) Three Monkeys has crossed the cafe divide from ho hum to well worth a visit. On a holiday Monday recently, Three Monkeys was brimming with other holiday makers lunching on their very simple but scrumptious gourmet items. The menu is based on local produce - and why wouldn't you be with McLaren Vale and the Fleurieu on your doorstep - and all freshly cooked. This quaint and quirky cottage has limited seating inside but a lovely outdoor area seating probably about 20 out back. There is also a delicatessen specialising in a very thoughtful and extensive range of cheeses and gourmet produce. Fantastic coffee also. I have my sights set on a weekend in Willunga soon to revel in this gorgeous town's over abundance of eateries. Friday night - Russell's Pizza, Sat morning Willunga Organic Market, Sat arvo drop into Three Monkeys for a delectable coffee and cake and pick up tasting plate supplies for a night in with a good drop of local Cab Sav by the fireside of a cute B & B (or a booking at Fino if I can't be bothered cooking) and finally breakfast Sunday am at the Green Room on High Street. Drive back along Aldinga Beach via the Victory Hotel at Sellicks and I have a weekend made in heaven!! Willunga in my opinion now beats McLaren Vale for a foodie weekend (excluding of course the legendary wine appeal of McLaren Vale)!

No really, I wasn't that hungry when I walked in here. And…read morethen I saw the cabinet of cheese, glacé cumquats and deli meats all from the Fleurieu in the cabinet. Then I read the menu (luckily breakfast finishes at 12pm otherwise I would have totally doubled up on my egg allocation for the day). And then the waitress apologised for serving a double shot of coffee to the customer, because that's how she always did it. And I knew my sensible eating plan for the day wasn't going to work. So instead of the planned "I'll just have some cheese and crackers," coming out of my mouth, I uncontrollably asked if I "could have the quinoa and carrot salad with fetta and flatbread please?" Before it arrived, I had talked myself into "just eating half of the salad and having the other half for dinner." And then I began to shovel piled forks of carrot and quinoa salad with dates and a white bean puree into my mouth and before I knew it, there was no doggy bag required. Even better was that they had run out of flatbread and so served me a couple of slices of their tomato polenta bread. It is now official, they should charge more than $13 for the salad and then ALWAYS serve this warmed and crispy with it in the future. Do not be fooled by the few seats inside and out the front, they have a lovely garden area out back for you to dine in with friends. This place would be delightful on a sunny autumn day or cold winter's morning and is one for the "bookmark" list of places to eat in Willunga.
