Passing through Raton, on my way down to Texas, I'd been craving Mexican food something fierce. Alfonso's to the rescue! The place is inside a gas station, but has an excellent variety of choices on their menu. Dining area is small, so best to ask for it "to go." I ordered the Chorizo Plate with flour tortillas ... or so I thought there'd be more than one. Actually it was one, BIG tortilla - more than enough to make some hand tacos with the chorizo. And what excellent chorizo it was! Flavorful and plenty of it. The beans and rice were equally tasty. For less than 12 bucks, this was a great plate of food. My only negative is service is s l o w ! There's one person taking orders from both the inside counter and the drive-thru. Likewise, there just one person preparing all the orders. Their fish tacos and chile rellenos are really good. Strangest order of steak fajitas I've ever eaten. Small chunks of beef floating in what resembles an oily brown gravy, with some onions and peppers laid on top. Sort of like a weird beef stew. read more

Alfonso's is where you need to stop for burritos if you find yourself in the northeastern New Mexico/southern Colorado around ANY meal time. The menu is full of expected staples, as well as regional specialties you'd be hard-pressed to find outside the area. The staff seem happy to see you and serve you with care and pride. Don't judge the book by its cover! This place is inside an older building gas station. But!! The food is good! The pictures you see pretty much resemble the food you will get. The fish tacos are good. Husbands ordered the chili verde plate. I tried the rice and beans it came with, I'm usually not a big fan, and they were tasty! The meat was tender and juicy. It's a gas station, it's a quick shop, it's a super place to get Mexican food to go or eat in. The menu is expansive and every item we tried was excellent. Monday four of us had chile rellenos, enchilada and tostada, carnitas and chile verde. All with beans, fabulous rice (per a true rice snob) and fresh made flour tortillas. They have Mexican drinks also. Tuesday two of us had cheese enchilada and beef burrito and fried rolled tacos. Again with beans and THE rice! If you add a churro like someone I know did you'll be stuffed. May have breakfast tomorrow before we leave town. It is in the Alta quick shop at a Conoco station. Well worth the visit. Chili Verde Plate was delicious, large portion and a perfectly filling lunch. Well it is located in a "filling" station. The guys behind the counter were great, service was fast and they made sure they checked on everything to make sure it was right. There is minimal ambience -- standard tables, plastic utensils, paper plates. I had, an egg, chorizo, bean, and potato burrito and my beautiful wife had an egg, bacon, potato with cheese burrito. We both agree they are GREAT! They are prepared fresh and delivered with pride. The red sauce is a great a complement to add if you like hot sauce. My wife loved the green sauce. The burritos are prepared with fresh delicious tortillas! The service is as expected. In short, the food was great but the guy taking people's orders seemed like he was one Karen away from going postal. He was as the youths say, "straight up not having a good time." Passing through and decided to give it a go-not disappointed, ignore the gas station association, they make great old style Mexican food, shredded beef had good chunks of onion and peppers, mild and good flavor. Beans were creamy an$ smooth, chips right out of fryer, hot and tasty. Salsa was good and chunky, green sauce spicy. Missed the 5 stars since the cheese enchiladas were not really melted, but the red sauce was on the spot and they were out of rellenos . Solid roadside option if you've got a taste for Mexican style cuisine! Just stopped for our second time and we're repeat fans of the simple but tasty cheese chile relleno platter, as well as impressed by the freshly fried in-house crispy taco shell for the beef taco. Food seemed to be from cans, the refried beans were mush, rice was salty and bland. Chicken was undercooked. Sauce watery and tasteless.

Their vegetarian burrito was vegan by default, which was great for me. The food was really good. The rice was cooked perfectly and they had really good beans. Also the salsas were really good. It was great to find while just travelling through. If you are vegan and travelling through Raton New Mexico, this is a great place to stop. If you are not vegan, I have it on good authority that the enchiladas are really good too. read more

This is a gas station restaurant, no offense, but they don't exactly have the best reputations, for a place this highly rated I honestly thought I would be a normal stand alone sit down restaurant. Nope. Number 2. Every table was dirty and there were flies buzzing around. Number 3. It shows one star so far as cost, it is not, with an average plate coming in around $15-16 bucks. I stop here every time I drive from Santa Fe back to Denver. I always have the breakfast burrito with chorizo and it is soooo good. Beats the hell out of the surrounding fast food junk places. Don't be frightened to go just because it is in a gas station. They also have a salsa bar so you can put many different salsas on your food. This was the good, bad, and ugly of our latest RV road trip between .CA and Michigan. My husband and I usually eat healthy home cooked meals but I wanted some authentic Mexican food because I usually stop in Santa Fe, a place that has the best Mexican food I have ever eaten. This restaurant had mixed reviews but I was hoping it would satisfy my Mexican food cravings. Instead it was a major disappointment. We had a toastato and taco dinner. The good: the person who took our order was genuinely a wonderful human. The fried tortillas were tasty and crunchy. The bad: the taco meat tasted like a mystery food that if it had more spice it would have been more pleasant to eat. The condiments were limited and the pico de gallo was close to empty. The ugly: Styrofoam plates and cups. Also the dismal service reaveled friendly and competinance are not always correlated. The server told me he would clean the tables, but never did, we had to request napkins, told me there was enough pico de gallo instead of filling the containe, and it taking 15 minutes to prepare our order. My husband said Taco Bell is more authentic. I just wished I took the poor reviews to heart and had Mexican food everywhere. read more

Four of us drove from Colorado Springs to Santa Fe for a few days to enjoy the Santa Fe food. On the way, we stopped for lunch at Alfonso's. It is attached to a gas station, but don't let that deter you. This is a good place for some decent roadside Mexican food. I enjoyed Carne Verde ordered with no pico de gallo. It was moist and flavorful with a tomatillo sauce. It was accompanied by delicious, lardy beans and very good rice. Ms T had fish tacos that were not exceptional. The fish had little flavor. I would recommend the carne. Bro J had a taco de carnitas and one al pastor. These were mini tacos, served with pico. There was no lengua, at least on that day. He also had some goor frijoles de la olla. TT enjoyed chicken enchiladas with red chile. This is a nice place to stop for a bite. They have a pretty large menu. I would not hesitate to stop in again.
