Jonathan's coaching is by far the most effective public speaking coaching I've ever had, and I've…read morebeen through a lot over the years: Dale Carnegie, Toastmasters (3 different groups), Speaking Circles, and another private coach. Jonathan's program and coaching were dramatically more effective than any of the other training I had. I use the word "dramatically" intentionally, because that is what all the other programs miss out on, and what is really Jonathan's innovation: using theatrical training techniques for public speaking. I had barely thought of this before, but if you think about it, when you're giving a speech you are performing, and there's actually a whole world of theatrical training techniques that are tremendously useful, that most of us never hear about it, and that are almost completely ignored by all other training. I felt like I was getting lots of "insider" info. When I started with Jonathan, I told him my fear: "I'm afraid that I will go through this training and when the time comes for me to give my first big speech I will be right back where I am now and panic and freeze up." He said he often gets that comment. But here's what he said that was really important: "By the time you get to the speech you will know so much more about speaking you just simply will not be as nervous - because you will know what you are doing." After going through three months of coaching, culminating in my speech, I can testify he hit the nail on the head. In those three months I saw my anxiety consistently go down, including on the day of the speech. I actually knew what I was doing for the first time standing in front of an audience - I actually wanted to do it so I could try all my new skills and get my message across in the way I had always hoped.

As you might expect in Berkeley, this is a diverse group; but most importantly, unintimidating. Since they meet early in the morning (7:30) and every other week (alt Thur), it's less disruptive to your day and your month. Some of the members provide great evaluations and insight into improving your speaking skills. It might get noisy in Au Coquelet Cafe, but not so bad that you're fully distracted. A couple useful exercises: 1) Table topics. They throw out a totally impromptu topic (at you), and you speak on it in some capacity for 2-3 minutes. It really helps with the impromptu thing. 2) Writing a speech for the audience. While I knew how to do this going in, it did help as a "for dummies" style reminder that build upon levels such as telling a story & incorporating gestures and props. They will also mercilessly beat you down regarding being under/over time, not projecting properly, and using too many "uhm's" etc. Guests are always welcome.

There's so much to do, climbing, building, exploring, getting wiggles out, and even a quiet room to chill. You can tell the folks behind it really thought through everything. The vibe, the décor, even the website feel so neurodiverse-affirming. They have tech to help build community around members too. We live in Novato so the distance makes a membership tough right now, but I'm hoping we can join in the summer when school isn't in the way. I'd love to see Spirited Play Labs expand to more places as this is the future IMO (please come to Novato, I'll help!). For families like ours, where typical play spaces can feel stressful or isolating, this place is a true gem, welcoming, thoughtful, and hopeful for the future. Thank you!!!

In other spaces, the stares that come with her stimming can be so difficult to ignore, but here at SPL, we feel safe, accepted, and not judged. That sense of belonging is rare for special needs families, and we are so grateful to have found it here. I love how the staff embraces inclusion and acceptance. it shows in everything they do. I truly wish there were more places and programs like this for our kids, because families like ours need community.
