The tools they provided at 3 Days, 3 Weeks and 3 Months in the rehoming of an orphaned animal was a rescue for me and Paddy Boy. I understood every phase he was going through and guided him home. If I could leave half a star I would and that is only because of the one volunteer who ultimately tried to steer me away from what I now know to be a for profit unscrupulous pet farm. I identified a little dog I was happily going to rescue (sight unseen within several days). I was at this center which they obviously spare no expense to maintain for appearances and was impressed at the time. The dog had just been surrendered and was in surgery and was to be fostered. I called every day to check on her progress while I was getting my home set up and buying food and must say some beautiful personalized items for this little one. I knew the entire time that anyone could slide in and adopt her though I was constantly calling, before I got there, per their rules. Another sign of how money hungry they are. When I phoned back just two days before pick up, I was met with some attitude which had occurred a couple other times, they told me the foster was keeping the dog! What!!!!! How unscrupulous , is this how folks get around paying adoption fees? My heart was broken! Summer was to be my little travel companion and to be trained as my support girl. I had to put my previous dog down which had been the last thing my now deceased husband had given me. This kind of thing gives other rescues and humane societies a bad reputation. People are really struggling these days with the cost of everything and if a family or person offer to take in an animal and they can do so, these rescue groups should be happy that their daily costs are no longer on them. These people in Pawleys Island should not be allowed to adopt out animals as they are a for profit store nothing more and they do not honor their commitments. It saddens me to say this because it should only be about the animals as they all deserve a good home. If people want to get into the rescue business then they should know it ain't about the glory nor the money honey! Being elderly, disabled and a widow I understand the high cost of everything to include vet bills. However vets I know also eat a lot of costs for the animals they treat who are rescues because it isn't always about the money. I could go on, but I think I have made my point. Some one took my 16 year old dog out of my Front yard one evening while her and her 13 year old daughter were out having a toilet break . After searching for days for my dog , calling all the vets driving through all the neighborhoods around me. Where do I find her ???! At All for Paws 10 miles away. They told me she was 8 years old and tried to sell me my own dog that some noisy neighbor I'm sure had stolen from my yard. They wanted 350.00 for her. I said that dog 16 , is deaf, almost blind , has cancer and a skin allergy and has never been apart from me or her 13 year old daughter. I told her the vet said she maybe had 4 months left and I would know when it was time to put her down. I asked who brought that dog there and where they said they got it. She said she had no information on her. I said if you don't give me the dog back I'm calling the police. What kind of place takes in a dog and doesn't get the name of the person that turned it in or where it was found. I Would never adopt from there!!!!!! read more

I had a similar experience with a dog I adopted. Her paper work wasn't ready when I drove 2 hours to pick her up . They said they would send or fax my vet her information. My vet and I called numerous times with no one answering the phone and no return calls. Had to have the dog vaccinated at my expense. Very unprofessional. Would NEVER get another dog from this shelter. Prices are outrageous too. read more

Be very careful when working with this shelter. to sum it up they lied MULTIPLE TIMES, made promises they didn't keep, and now after i have been VERY patient and left numerous messages, refuse to return phone calls. I went to an event where I decided to foster a dog. Before fostering him I specifically asked if he had any prior ailments, they said he had a clean history (lie) and he was fully vaccinated (lie) so I would be charged $125 to adopt whereas the puppies who weren't fully vaccinated were free. When fostering him I noticed once in a while he would limp. They said there was no issue in his history and that I could bring him in for an Xray. I brought him to pawleys island from Wilmington (roughly a 3 hour trip from where i live) to have the xray the first time and WHOOPS their xray person wasn't there. I took a day off work to bring the dog for the second time to pawleys island when the xray tech was there where i was told that they didn't need to sedate him and that everything looks great he's good to go (stay tuned). Naturally, after that i adopted the dog (around a month after having him). I take him for his first vet appointment so he can go there for boarding when surprise surprise, he is NOT fully vaccinated after they get the records from the shelter. He also had hookworm, and he has hip dysplasia. When i told my vet that I had driven to Pawley's island for an xray i find out later that i was lied to again and that no actual Xray was completed and they had no record of ever doing one on him. I called the manager and was told by the manager through text since he refused to answer my calls that he told me "he may need xrays" and that he "is not a veterinarian" even though he also said he knew that i wanted an xray done and that's what they agreed to do. I called the front office and was told that I can return the dog, i've paid (now) almost $500 dollars in vet bills for the dog so i said even if i did, am i going to be reimbursed for the vet bills? (I HAVEN"T EVEN HAD HIM 2 MONTHS!) Their reply: Nope...i then get passed to Allison who said she was going to talk to the board about refunding the adoption fee, reimbursing the vaccination fees, and paying for a real xray that my vet will complete i would consider forgetting the fecal test/treatment for hookworm (because i was trying to be reasonable).....guess what the xray showed? He has a BROKEN FEMUR that never healed correctly so he has one leg shorter than the other. Of course after telling Allison this and calling the shelter MULTIPLE TIMES and leaving MULTIPLE messages she has not once returned my call or text about the situation. For the record the dog has been at the shelter over a year and he is only 2 so how does he have a broken femur and NO ONE NOTICE???? My vet says he may still have problems later on but for now i have to give him joint supplements every day for the rest of his life. It's becoming apparent that they lied to get the dog adopted and get him out the door as quick as possible. I am VERY disappointed in the lack of professionalism, the ineptitude to take care of a dog that was seriously hurt (and apparently ignored), the lies and deceit, and their attitude of hoping I'll just go away instead of handling things appropriately. Please be careful and seriously consider getting all your records and having your vet look a dog over before adopting because you can't trust this shelter. read more
