Last minute haircut...early morning. I had a big meeting coming up and needed to find a haircut that was open near center city. This place popped up and i called in whether they had any walk-in appointments. They said absolutely and i was able to come in 15 minutes and get taken care of right away. The haircut was $35 which was reasonable and they did a good job in cleaning up my hair. They washed my hair so i was able to head back into the office. Would come back here again. read more

Walk ins are NOT welcome. I came in at 7 am for a haircut and was refused service. I was visiting Philadephia during a business trip and needed a quick cut (maybe 5 minute buzz on the sides was all I really needed). Again, I was refused and told to come back another time. I would recommend having more staff on hand in the mornings to ensure walk ins are taken care of when they arrive to the barber. This was highly unprofessional and an inconsiderable shame considering the amount of high reviews this place has received. read more

I am seriously disappointed with today's haircut. I really wanted to like the shop because of the flexibility of walk and location . The only thing that it has going for it is location. Not professional. The young lady, who was the one who washes hair, was getting her hair "blown out" by the one of the hairdressers and both were upset that I had interrupted their time and stated so. The girl, with parts of her hair sectioned off in clips, never tested the water and burnt my scalp and then when I said ouch that's hot she froze my head with cold. Not fun. The haircut I received was the worst haircut I ever received. The woman (I don't know her name because she never introduced herself or asked my name) started cutting with the razors and I pulled away. I said can we talk about what I won't done first? She kind of snapped out of it and said ok and then did what she wanted anyway. I came back to work after and a co-work pointed out the uneven parts of where she chopped. My fellow traveling co-workers thought I was crazy to consider getting a haircut while out of town. But my hair was getting crazy shaggy, and this NorCal boy was withering in the heat and humidity of July in Philadelphia. So I put my faith in Yelp, and took a walk on the wild side. The place is a hard to find but, in my confusion, I stumbled upon a drug store selling water ice, so it was all good. Neither Gaetano or Lou were there, just a nice Asian lady. She was finishing up when I walked in, right before closing on Saturday. I think I waited 15 minutes, my hair was "did" about 30 minutes later. A scalp and neck massage were included in the price. I forget exactly -- it was around $20. There was a sign on the wall apologizing for the recent increase. I gotta give props to the shops keeping it old school. I moved to Philly 6 months ago and have been going to the Ranstead Barber shop since then. I usually go on the weekends. They are one of the few barbershops in center city Philly open on Saturdays. Both Gaitano and Lou are very friendly and know their job well. There is nothing fancy about this place, just an old fashioned barber shop. There's a reason that I came back to this place to get my hair cut even once I moved from Philly to DC. There's a reason that, even though I live in Cleveland now, I come back here whenever I'm in Philly to get my hair cut. In fact, nobody has cut my hair except Dante since 2009. He does a great job. The one thing that struck me about Dante was that he NEVER asked me how I wanted my hair cut. I appreciated this. I don't know how I want my hair cut. I want it cut so that I don't look stupid. And he just kind of cut my hair the way he thought it should be cut. To quote him, "I cut the hair the way it tells me to." And you know what? It looked good and I didn't look stupid. I asked him two weeks ago how long he's been cutting hair. "On and off for 53 years" was his answer. And it shows. The man is an expert. No buzz cuts. No crazy stuff. Just scissors and a comb. He cuts my hair while it dries so that the cut will be reproduced the same way once I leave. He said the cut will always look best after a week, and sure enough it does. He's full of good advice. He knows what he's doing. And he's just a fun guy to talk to. Ask him about all of the countries in the world that he's traveled to. Or about drinking wine with his family in south Philly as a kid. You know that barber in the Clint Eastwood movie "Gran Torino"? He's like that. Except not racist. I won't let anybody else touch my hair. read more

It took me 4 years to find someone in Philly who could tame my thick, wavy, yet slowly receding hair as well as my favorite haircutter in northeast centralish New Jersey, and that man is Dante at All About Hair. He's the Han Chiang of haircuttery. You don't tell him what hairstyle you want, and you shouldn't - he's the expert, not you. When you first sit down, he quickly yet precisely runs his fingers through your hair, pointing out every cowlick and thin spot and mercilessly identifying all of the mistakes your previous stylist/barber made. Then he just starts cutting. That's it, that's all there is to it. Sit back and enjoy the show. When he's done, the ground around the barber's chair will be covered with hair, and the hair on your head will simply look like an improved version of the style you came in with. But your haircut isn't really over. "Come back in a month, after its grown in a little" he'll say to you as you leave. "Then I'll really be able to fix it." He's not just drying your hair. (hair dryers blow hot air, get it? Ahhhh, I crack me up) Come back in a month, let him cut it again, and listen to his advice about how to make the most of your hair's imperfections (c'mon, you know you've got em - that's why you're not a news anchor). Then go home, take a shower, and look in the mirror. Every natural feature of your hair will have been sculpted into the perfect form. "Shit, maybe I should move to Hollywood" was probably the first thought that went through my mind as I casually ran my hands through my hair and it fell perfectly into place. And let's face it, that's what it's all about. Sure, he doesn't have as much to say about videogames and snowboarding as Russell at Russell Scott Hair Designs in Clark, NJ, but he gives the best damn haircuts out there. It's so nice to see a barber shop in Philly, but it's also even nicer to get a high quality haircut that isn't excessively priced. I tried this out because of the other good reviews, and I was very pleased. I walked in on a Saturday around 2pm, only had to wait around 5 mins. Lou was there and we chatted about everything from jazz to sky diving. Reminds me of a friend of my dad's, very nice person. First time since I was a kid I had an all scissors cut that turned out great. It's a hidden gem, as you walk north on 18th street from rittenhouse and you come to Ranstead look to your left and you'll see the barber poles. I realize some of you absolutely love this place but I had a terrible experience here and people should know about it. I've never had a worse hair cut in my life and I'm really not exaggerating. First, I went here because it was close to me and because the prices were a little better than other neighboring barber shops (this is more of a salon really). I got my hair cut by an older woman who kept telling me she understood what I wanted and would cut my hair properly. All I asked for was a 3 on the sides and a trim on top and I have really straight full hair which is very easy to cut. She said it wouldn't be a problem at all, however kept cutting and kept buzzing and in the process somehow cut her own finger which started BLEEDING. Instead of putting on a bandaid or stopping the haircut, she kept wiping it on a towel and just kept on cutting my hair. Not only was I totally disgusted by this poor practice in hygiene, but she kept cutting and cutting even after being totally done with the clippers. I kept watching out to make sure she wasn't getting her bloody finger on my hair, which btw was getting shorter and shorter. By the time she was "finished," my hair was a bit shorter on one side and longer in the back than anywhere else. It looked really bad and was so short overall that I decided it would be better if I just went home and shaved my head, which I've done before. I didn't bother getting pissed off and yelling or screaming because my hair grows back super fast, but I was still very disappointed and upset. I think the lady cutting my hair should have just told me that she doesn't know how to cut men's hair. I would have thanked her and left and possibly recommended them to my female friends. Despite all of that, I was still ready to give them a small tip for at least being friendly and kind throughout and also washing my hair for me. Wouldn't you know it- they found a way to mess that up too, by telling me after swiping my credit card that they only accept cash tips. I didn't have any cash so then they seem frustrated and upset and as if it was my fault for not knowing this already. At this point I kind of lost my cool and just said whatever and walked out. I had to go to another barber shop to get this lousy haircut properly fixed. Wil over at South Street Barbers fixed it up as best as he could and has been an amazing barber for me ever since. Overall, getting a haircut is the equivalent of torture for me. I have very simple hair, and I like a very simple haircut. But yet, with most of the salon's I go to, there is a girl who looks like she's about 18 years old and cuts my hair in a way that she thinks is trendy/fashionable/cute. No. I like my hair simple, clean, classic, and uber manly. I don't want to look like some hipster kid who wears jeans that are so ridiculously tight that he will never be able to procreate. I am fairly new to Philadelphia, and I read a review about this place that said that they were good about squeezing in walk-in appointments, and I was in desperate need of a haircut in a narrow time frame. The friendly and courteous staff managed to fit me in somewhere. The gentleman who cut my hair, his name is Lou, was pretty much the man. I explained to him how I like my hair done. I told him the way that I part it, and how I style it. That's it. He followed my simple directions and I was very pleased. Lou is a great guy. He's been in the business for "longer than I've been alive" as he says. Extremely personable, very pleasant to talk to. There is no forced conversation and no awkward silence, just an overall satisfying experience. My haircut was $25 (not including tip). Perhaps some people feel this is pricey, but good establishments like this are hard to come by, so I feel its well worth the money. The salon is extremely clean and well kept. All of the staff (including Lou's wife who was so kind to wash my hair) have a great attitude and enjoy serving their customers. The place doesn't look too fancy, and that's just the way I like it. This is the kind of place where you come back to the same barber and he cuts your hair the same way for 20 years. Maybe some people like more trendy haircuts (which I'm pretty confident Lou would be able to do without any trouble) but for people like me who just like a quick, tasteful, and pleasant haircut, this place is a gem. read more

A few years ago I decided it was time to lose my spikey-front hair style in favor of a more professional look. I stumbled upon Dante after reading some good reviews of his work. Everything I had read was true. He studies your head, cuts your hair "the way it wants to be cut" and the result is a great looking haircut. I can get out of the shower, dry my hair with a towel, run my fingers through it a few times, and it falls into place by itself. I don't use gel anymore because it doesn't need any...it just stays where it's supposed to. It takes under a minute. We are in Philadelphia so our son can be admitted to CHOP for some testing that his doctor at Boston Children's Hospital recommended he have done by a team of specialists here. Of course we wanted our 2 1/2 year old son to have a handsome haircut before he goes into the hospital so we did a google search and found, All About Hair. Getting our sons haircut is usually a difficult task but it was not today. I wish I remembered the nice ladies names because they were so nice to us and our little guy. If you're ancient you want a barber shop like the one you enjoyed as a kid, friendly barbers who will talk or be quiet, cut you hair in one of the standard styles, and give you a seat while waiting with magazines that you'd never have at home. Ranstead Barber is tucked away on a dead-end street with a tiny barber pole outside - you have to look hard to find it. All my experience is with Gaetano - he's there only at the end of the week. I've been on a three year odyssey, which has included some of the worst haircuts and barbers this side of, well, anything, to find a place like All About Hair. It is simply fantastic. I was here early on a Friday morning and aside from doing an incredible to the follicles that rest atop my head, Lou provided fantastic conversation and an environment that was more than inviting. I've been living in Philly for over a year now, and I can finally say I found my hair place. Both the ambiance and the people give off a great warm vibe. The shop is beautiful and located right in Center City. The hair stylists there are really nice and my guy Lou did a fantastic job. We had a great conversation and really made me feel comfortable. I went there for the first time right before Christmas. I have had a hard time finding an old time barber like the one I used to go to in Brooklyn and Staten Island. I used to go to various people, never going back, because I couldn't really find a place I liked. I liked the cut, it was no nonsense, cut my hair and let me go type of place. I'm not a big fan of idle chit chat, and hate awkward conversations, and these guys respected that. I got a good cut, only payed 24.00 plus 5.00 tip, and have made an appt to go back in a month. If the next cut goes just as well, I think I have a place I can go to on a regular basis and just keep an on going appointment. I'll have to see if they do a shave as well. read more
