The first thing I worried about with enrolling my daughter in a ballet program was exposing her an unhealthy environment. I had - in the past - the displeasure of being around a large group of young dancers from a San Francisco ballet school. These kids were consistently rude and self-centered. Some even had developed eating issues. That is not what you will get here. The older girls are not only wonderful dancers, but they get to know the younger girls during the productions. This creates a wonderful community within the school. And there isn't a single waif among them. They are all healthy, athletic young ladies. My daughter is getting a chance to learn ballet, perform on stage, and build a healthy sense of self. I don't think I could ask for more.

A friend from school told us about the school, so I brought my daughter in for a trial class. She loved it so much we signed her up right away. Not too long after, I noticed that a lot of the parents are very involved with the group. Some of them dance, others play instruments and some help with costumes and events. A couple of the moms invited me to take a class, but I remember trying Tahitian in high school and never quite picked it up. However, the whole culture at the studio is like a family. Knowing that I could bring my kids, I decided to try it out because I needed some form of exercise. Never did I imagine I would be two years in and still loving it. I went from just dancing as exercise to being able to perform in front of people, which I have always been scared to do. The best part of the studio is all the people from the owners/teachers to the families involved. There are no egos or people trying to outdo one another. Everyone is uplifting, supportive and helpful. And just like the name suggests, it is more than a studio, it is a cultural arts center. We are not just taught dances. We are taught the language, the meaning of the songs we dance and even how to make our own costumes. Plus, you are able to participate as much as you like. If you don't want to perform, you are not forced to do so. They even have special classes where they teach you how to play different instruments. There are even fitness classes like Zumba. Of course, right now due to COVID things are different, and extra precautions need to be taken, so we do not have gatherings like prior. However, I highly recommend this studio for anyone who loves the Tahitian culture or just loves to dance.

In addition, it is the only ballet company in the Valley that is successful enough as a company to present the full-length Nutcracker Ballet, every year for the past 18 years. This is an impressive production and a beloved gift to the community at large. The positive impact that NRDC has had on our girls, as well as the extended company of dancers, is evident to all who meet them. They are some of the most focused, hardworking, loyal, supportive kids you will ever meet. Whether they choose to go on and dance professionally or not, the life skills learned at NRDC are hard to replicate. What might work for a young child does not always translate into their tween and teen years. Ballet is hard, and it takes commitment, you have to sacrifice a lot for your passion, just ask Misty Copeland. If it isn't right for your child or your family, that's okay - but let there be no mistake, NRDC continues to be the best ballet education in the Valley with countless students who continue to excel both in life and dance after NRDC.

My opinion. I am sure the dance school will try to punish but I feel like leaving this comment. Any…read moreschool expressing "xx (student) is weak" is not education. The dance school used to be good for younger kids to learn ballet. It has mainly a single instructor and another temp instructor. The main instructor runs the place (non-profit). It looks like she has preferred students who always flatter no matter what and she has unpreferred students whom she does not care much about. When she feels good, she overly flatters preferred students. When she does not feel good, she blames other students - her communication gets unreasonably hurtful to kids in front and behind. It goes on and on. I feel it is not the student's fault. Those come from the body structure, forcing unreasonable ways on the body. A visiting instructor disagree with her teaching and pointed out it is not a safe way to dance. The timing of having point is another example - it is rushed to have it but physicians did not recommend it. Parents are having a hard time pushing back and forth between "Do it now" from the instructor and "Too early" from the physicians. Any discussions come back with humiliation, "you should withdraw from the school" or "will not choose you in the next Nutcracker (or recital)." The instructor does try to balance saying "I care about you" while she continues blaming the student. The attitude is very depressing. The students are small kids and teenagers. In my opinion, the school must realize it is unhealthy and inappropriate for younger kids.

The teachers are great, Especially Miss Kelsey. She does wonders with her Pre-Ballet and Ballet 1 classes! Such patience she has, its amazing! When I used to dance at another school when i was younger, they had given me a complete schedule when we signed up, when the recital would be, when the dress rehearsal were. My parents knew exactly what to expect for the dance year, knew when to plan vacations according to our schedule. Napa Valley Ballet doesn't not offer that. so be prepared for you child to possibly miss something if you plan ahead like I do. When it came to the recital, which they knew would be at the end of the "school year" in June. We didn't learn about the date of the recital until Mid April because they had not secured a location for the recital... Wouldn't this be something that they should have been planning since the beginning of the school year? The poor planning of the recital will also most likely lead to my step-daughter missing her dress rehearsal, The ONLY rehearsal, which is a whole week before the actual recital. My step-daughter is 5, and in two different dances, I DO NOT expect her to even remember what she is required to do a whole week ahead of time, if she can even make it.. The ladies who work the front desk never have any idea of whats going on. They can never give me an answer to any question I have. For instance, when they finally announced the date and times for the recital, the lady at the desk had NO idea if the tickets were on sale, or when they would be.. (the recital was less than two months away when i asked.) The poor planning of this schools events, and lack of communication at this establishment has lead me to look at other ballet schools for my step-daughter, which I don't really want to do considering my step-daughter loves her teacher and has become friends with the girls in her class. If the owner can step up, and take more initiative in her business, my step-daughter might possibly attend in the fall again.
