The shelves are often empty, the food is frequently old, and the prices are now very high. The staff has always been unfriendly -- sometimes even rude -- and changes constantly. But the worst part is that they cheat you: prices on the shelf are sometimes lower than what you pay at the register, you can be charged for things you didn't buy, and if you ask for a receipt by email, they rudely ignore you. I avoid this place entirely.

Belgomarkt provides a good variety of local/artisanal/organic ingredients, and top-notch quality for the money. Great selection of artisanal breads, organic cheeses, bulk grains and flours, and even pastas. Really nice meats. Today I was pleasantly surprised to see confit duck legs! At less than 4 euro, that's a bargain I could not resist. Also picked up some fresh terrine and duck rillettes, inexpensive and far better quality than what you find at the local supermarket (if you can find those products at all--usually not). My only frustration is that some of the fresh produce at Belgomarkt could be fresher. At my last visit, a few weeks ago, they have a nice selection of several varieties of organic apples. Today, only one kind, and you could tell they had been stored at room temperature and were past prime. (Management take note: Apples should be kept in the cooler at night, to keep them from off-gassing and ripening prematurely!) The leeks and dinosaur kale were also not fresh enough to buy. But these are easy problems to fix, if you train your staff and have adequate cold storage space. I will keep shopping here for the delicious local meats, cheeses and breads, and the occasional fresh veg. If Belgomarkt can pay more attention to keeping the fresh offerings truly fresh, I have a feeling they will attract even more fans!

Even the tea is more here than anywhere else. I often buy organic and local food while travelling, so I wanted to drop in for some nuts, nut butter, chocolate, and lo and behold, freshly squeezed green juice! Yes! Sadly, there was never anyone at the juice bar, even after waiting multiple times on different occasions. Almond butter was almost €1 more than another bio store on the other side of Parc Cinquetaire. Chocolate was also priced higher, as was pretty much everything I came across where I'm aware of the local pricing. Expats, the staff speak English and French. I was a bit annoyed that even though I speak French fluently (I went to school in French), and spoke French to the staff, I was replied to in English because of my bank card (which puts the language your card is in up on the debit machine screen - standard in Belgium). I'll return just because it's convenient, but I'll likely buy most of my food from the Sunday market instead, right in front of this store.
