When my daughter came back home several weeks into her freshman year, she said, "I'm so grateful I went to Veritas. I know how to think and am prepared for college." There has been multiple times where there will be a roach in the girls bathroom toilet, the girls bathroom is so nasty. The girls will throw bloody pads all over the floor in the bathroom. The bathroom is also infested with bugs. And there has been many fights, and so much drama to the point I can't take it anymore. And one specific bad thing about this school is if you say anything about harming your self they will send you home or suspend you instead of sending you to the counseling office and suggesting your parents to sign you up for therapy. GW CARVER IS BY FAR THE WORST SCHOOL MY CHILD HAS BEEN TO. Do NOT try to get into this school zone just because great schools dot com rates it a 10 out of 10- because that's what I did. It has been a nightmare since day one. The face of GW Carver, Ms C. Plush, is the meanest woman with glasses I have ever had to interact with. She is not helpful and should not be the "face" of the school. She is rude and does not wish to be bothered with anything. She has the worst attitude I have ever seen in my life, so why she chose to deal with parents and children I will never understand. They serve garbage food like doughnuts every day. The bus has absolutely no consistency - some days my daughter is dropped off at 3:55pm, somedays she isn't dropped off til 4:30pm. So everyday day you are getting down there earlier and earlier and you start praying that nothing happened to your child when you see all these empty buses driving by. They allow the children to nap in class. They separate the boys and girls at the playground. I could go on and on but I think you see where I'm going with this. The school is a joke. I have heard through numerous of my friends who have attended this school in the past and present that they have faced intense discrimination and bullying at OHMS. When they have approached the principal about it, she simply told them that they should have come sooner or that they couldn't do anything about it, even when the bullying was explicitly racist and queerphobic. A previous student had suffered homophobic bullying that eventually led to their death by suicide. The news did not report on this death, and the school has taken zero responsibility. My good friend left a review simply stating her experiences at this school, leading the principal to send an email to their parent implying they were mentally unwell just for leaving an honest review. Now, through my own and most recent experience, I attended the 8th grade graduation. When a student went up to speak and mentioned hurtful, discriminatory comments she had experienced in class, she was shushed promptly by a faculty member and told to "Hold." She continued her speech anyway, but whether to her own accord or through permission I am not sure. In addition, OHMS is far too expensive to be having these problems. If you want to pay good money for your child to go to a good school, do not choose this one. I promise it will do more harm than good. I do not doubt that some students have experienced goodness here and have made good memories, my own friends have made lifelong relationships through this school. But that does not excuse the unabashed discrimination. My friends have described their experience at this school as the worst years of their lives. You do not want that for your child.
