We were joined the community for a spectacular Mediterranean lunch and were joyfully welcomed. The parish is beautiful.

St. Joseph Church is a gorgeous Melkite, or Eastern rite, Catholic Church in Lansing…read more For those who aren't familiar with the Eastern rites, they're part of the Catholic Church, but they don't use the Latin liturgy like most churches. In the case of the Melkite church, which is part of the Byzantine rite, the liturgy is mostly in Arabic. Roman Catholics can meet their Sunday Mass obligation by attending a Melkite church, and can receive Communion there as well. We attended St. Joseph several times a couple of years ago after one of the priests at our regular parish (who's now not there) said something that ticked off my husband. I had happened to speak with a woman from St. Joseph shortly before this all happened and thought we would check it out, at least until my husband cooled down a bit :) The church itself is gorgeous, with a beautifully carved wooden altarpiece and painted icons. The congregation is primarily Arabic, as s the liturgy, as mentioned above. The priest and the parishioners were EXTREMELY friendly and welcoming. Everyone there couldn't have been more delightful. However, we were pretty much the only non-Arab people there, and felt rather self-conscious about how much we stood out. (I'm a quarter Palestinian, but I don't look it, and I don't speak Arabic.) Eventually, we went back to our regular parish ... though the liturgy seemed a little dull compared with the beautiful one at St. Joseph! That said, this is a gorgeous parish with very sweet people, and if you're ever curious about the Eastern rites, it's definitely worth checking out. (But be warned: Dress here is definitely a bit more formal than at most Roman Catholic churches.) And definitely don't miss their annual Mideastern Food Festival ... the food is to die for!

This church has taken strict Covid precautions, and has been closed for Sunday services & most…read moreactivities since March 15, 2020. But Food Pantry serving the Okemos area is operating. Currently undergoing renovation, with planned reopening in Spring, 2021. Meanwhile, sermons are on YouTube, communication with congregation is thru Zoom, Facebook, e-mail, and hard copy US Mail upon request. When "in session", I highly recommend this church as a welcoming community of friendly, non-judgmental people of all ages. The church serves its community with many many outreach projects, many of them ongoing during the shut-down. One may be involved in as much or as little as one would like to be, membership not required to participate! I love it!
