Just kind of drove up on Allen's and from the outside I knew this would be a gooodddd dinner. After driving in from Nashville (with a 3 hr stop at Graceland) we were starved... The food is absolutely delicious and the prices very reasonable considering you can go to a fast food restaurant and spend more on crappy food then you spend over at Allen's eating delicious food. Sauces= I loved all three Chicken= moist and juicy Rib sandwich= not what we were thinking but fall off the bone, per-fection. Given I am from Connecticut I will not say I am a great authority on BBQ. I will say for me that Allen's barbecue is delicious. We had the ribs the chicken salad, and the coleslaw. All great. The ribs were so well done they just fell off the bone. you have your choice of barbecue sauce is in sweet, mild and hot. The food came out fast. So there was not much waiting. Had to make a driver change on a Dallas to East Tennessee road trip and decided to grab a quick bite to go, despite limited options (McDonalds and Chicken Express among them). Was super surprised and happy to see this BBQ spot at the fork in the road just past Chicken Express. The prospect of some local BBQ before we got back on the road was appealing but this place didn't show up on the Yelp map, even while I sat in the parking lot. I eventually found it listed as a caterer but decided to give it a shot anyway. There were 3-4 other cars in the gravel lot at 12:45p on a Tuesday so that gave me hope for a restaurant. You order at a window on the front covered porch from a menu with lots of options. I didn't find my preferred turkey but the chopped chicken sandwich caught my eye. Order the jumbo sandwich unless you just aren't hungry. It was good sized and full of moist smoky chopped chicken on a soft bun. Really fantastic. It already came with the house sauce on it, which was tangy and slightly peppery. The chicken had a great flavor and the pepper on it came through without biting. The guys working the front and the meat counter were friendly and readily offered me a large condiment tub with the original sauce to go. Just wish I had time and appetite for more today. Next time! This review is 4 stars because I only tried the chicken, but based on this experience and other reviews I will be surprised if I don't give it a 5th star next time I pass through Arkadelphia. read more

Very classic 'BBQ' looking type place. A very warm and friendly place in a older home. The furnishings were tastefully done and very clean. The problem was the food. I ordering a BBQ chicken sandwich, the meat was dry and over cooked. It was crunchy. I'm thinking that they had gotten to the bottomed the basket and it was all the over cooked chicken chips. Where to start...food is darn good especially compared to many big chains. Our first time here was a few months back and we dined in roughly a little over an hour before they closed. Sausage (both types) were great and sliced brisket was phenomenal. Three types of sauce all were were pretty good and THEY HAD FRIED OKRA which made me very excited bc well even average fried okra is good because it's fried... I digress... their Okra was good... it's the corn meal variety that tends to be crunchy not wet. We ate rather quickly and left before we became the weird late night people that don't get the hint it's closing time. Raved about it on the way home, compared it to one of our favorite local places in our home town of Fort Worth, TX. Great, great, great 5 stars! Fast forward to two days ago: We roll in around 2pm business is slow..lunch rush is over. We needed to grab and go this time. The young lady (geez using that term makes me feel old but I was raised to be polite and I'm a southerner so I do) came to the window and asks what She can get for us. I give her my order and politely ask if they have okra or onion rings today? (Both of these are special items (or so I've read online) and I get that but considering they apparently don't always post stuff on the boards outside didn't hurt to ask...right? WRONG! I get a flat and very perturbed "No." No explanation or not today that's only on such and such day ect. My better half put in her order and we got some sides to share. Two shop beef sandwiches Two pint sides and and open faced chopped beef sandwich $40. Yikes I love bbq as much as the next guy but geez. Wasn't even the sliced, more expensive meats were talking chopped beef in a bun. Even the crappiest bbq joint (IMO) in Fort Worth sells chopped beef sandwiches 4 for $5. Whatever, we can afford it but you'll get better value down the road at the Hamburger Barn (not bbq though lol). We sit outside until our food is ready and when she hands us our bag my better half asks if there's sauce in the bag? Her response? "What for?"...insert awkward two second pause for that asinine question... my better half responds "the food"...still in shock why in the heck she'd even ask at A BBQ RESTAURANT!!! "Oh well there's sauce on the meat" we both were dumbstruck and still in awe of the stupidity and said okay and left. $40 spent on a meal and I couldn't get 2-3 two oz cups of sauce... Side note: it was not lost upon us that they had a stacks and stacks of sauce in little cups behind the cash register...if they want to charge us please charge us!!! We get that costs are up and we'll pay! Took our food back to where we were staying and there was a small drizzle of sauce that was all but absorbed by the bun. Meat was pretty good but dry without the extra sauce, no pickle, onion ect that is generally offered at most genuine bbq joints. If we have to pay for the extra stuff to actually receive it please just let us know when we order. Clearly the young lady was having a bad day or something but a smile and a little menu explanation goes a long way. We may be back eventually (dine in so we actually get sauce) but it won't be for quite some time. Visit for the good smoked meats but prepare you're explanations ahead of time as to why you want sauce... read more

I have the honor of being the first to review this great restaurant. I was taking an insane roadtrip/move from Atlanta to Santa Barbara and stopped here to eat. My initial goal was to try some fast food place called Express Chicken or Speedy Chicken, but when I saw Allen BBQ with rocking chairs and picnic tables, I had to check it out. I know that Arkansas doesn't usually roll off the tongue as a source of BBQ, but the food was stellar. I didn't try tons of items, just one - 1/4 lb. of chopped beef. But it was so tasty. I sat at a picnic table and tried all three sauces with the beef. The staff are all super polite, and I did venture inside to use the bathroom and realized that there is a lot of seating inside. SO if you live nearby or are making a trek in the general area, you do it to yourself to stop by and get some great BBQ just off the highway. read more

I've given this place 7 or 8 tries since moving here over a year ago. It's the only local bbq joint and other options are slim. But I won't be returning. Only 3 ribs in the dinner. One of them was at least 70% fat. Another was at least 50% fat. And the amount of salt on the rub was ridiculous and I love salt on almost everything. For me to complain about too much salt is almost laughable. My son, who will eat pretty much anything and be happy, tossed a rib back into the container, complained about the fat, and asked me why I had added so much salt (I hadn't added any). I saw "Homemade Banana Pudding" advertised on a sign when I picked up the order so I asked them to add it. Banana pudding is pretty hard to screw up yet they did a bang-up job. It was prepackaged with a seal I had to break so I'm questioning how "homemade" it actually was. The pudding was incredibly thin (It wouldn't stay in the spoon. The consistency was more like tomato soup) and it had a very artificial, unpleasant taste. To call it "homemade" is offensive. It went in the trash with the ribs. The beans were swimming in bbq "soup", half of which had spilled over and covered the potato salad. Never again. If you've never actually had a good bbq, then you might enjoy it. Compared to bbq I've had all over the state, it's barely a 5 out of 10 on a good day when their ribs aren't predominantly fat. read more

Year ago visiting some good friends and we picked some ribs for dinner. These ribs are the best ever. Sauce perfect. Meat falls off the bones. Just could not stop eating. I usually love the food Allen's but dinner tonight was way off. I called ahead and ordered a rack of babyback ribs. The person who answered the phone could barely speak English and we were having a hard time placing an order for 1 rack of ribs. I picked up my "barbecue" babybacks and took them home to eat. When I sat down to eat and open the ribs they were babyback but with no barbecue sauce. They were a little dry with no sauce and hard to eat. I thew over half of the rack away. If you get a chance to eat their food, with sauce, it's usually very very good. read more

We were driving from little rock to Dallas when it was time for lunch. My husband pulled into chicken express when we noticed from the parking lot a BBQ place with a line. Well I can now tell you why Allens has a line. We got back into the car and went the Allens instead. We ordered 4 chopped beef sandwiches, all 4 of their sides & 3 fried pies. We all said next time we are ordering jumbo sandwiches. They were best I've had. The grilled the bun so they sandwiches were hot. Baked beans were the winner!! Hands down my favorite BBQ joint. Their chopped beef sandwich is sooooo good, the coleslaw is perfect and sweet, and their fried pies are phenomenal. Every other BBQ joint I've been to either has good sauce OR good smoked meat, but Allen's is the only one that has BOTH. The meat is so smoky and juicy you could eat it without sauce. Allen's doesn't believe in combining BBQ into 2 or 3 meat plates....but one meat was so good by itself, that Allen's doesn't need to. I was disappointed that I could not sample a bit of it all. I asked the lady at the counter what was popular and she said the baby back ribs. Holy cow! I had enough for 2 meals plus it was wonderful! The ribs were tender, smoky, and had an excellent BBQ rub on it. Allen's have 3 sauces: a tangy original, a sweet sauce, and my favorite - a hot tomatoey BBQ sauce. All sauces were very good. Something that Allen did really well is they made sure you were fed. My 2 sides, potato salad and beans, came in bowls...not cups like many places. To put it mildly, they are very generous. The potato salad was a baked potato salad, really good if you love that kind of potato salad. However, the beans were unbelievable! They are called Allen's beans and taste like they just came from over a campfire. Besides the disappointment of not having 2 or 3 meat plates.
