I've been coming to Almaden Barbers ever since the beloved John Baptiste passed away R.I.P. They are an independent community service staffed by friendly, competent barbers. Nothing fancy, but some of the best haircuts I've ever received at a competitive price. My barber still uses shave cream and a straight razor to get my neck smooth as a baby's bottom. Unfortunately, with my busy schedule lately I haven't had time to make the forty minute round-trip over there and took a chance coming to Almaden Barbers as they're only five minutes from the pad. Here's a little TLDR action: Location- Not too far deep in The 'Den and in a nice strip mall that includes a sushi joint, Middle Eastern grocery store and one of my new favorite places to eat Mo's. Cost- $17 (cash only) which is more expensive than the hack-and-slash places you can find elsewhere, but let's just say you get what you pay for. Service- On both my visits I've seen Mr James Do who's quick, silent and efficient. I think he was a Ninja in a past life... Ambiance- Clean and quiet shop that's full of old timers talking about their kids and grand kids. Real old sKool kinda place, ja dig? Cut- Mr Do keeps it tight. He does an excellent job and gives me what I ask for. Altho, granted I'm pretty simple, but people can screw up the simplest things. I love that he blends my sideburns into my beard if they're not quite at the same length; a lot of barbers won't on principle because they feel like they would have to charge you for a beard trim??? He also did a good job on my squirmy 6-year-old on my first visit. Overall Almaden Barbers is a solid 1A spot for me when I need a quick and fast haircut―I'm usually in and out in less that twenty minutes. My teenager came here today. He wants a special hipster haircut and the discount hair salons weren't cutting the mustard. I suggested he might want to try a men's barbershop where old dudes know how to cut a dude's hair. This is in our neighborhood and we showed up without an appt. James was able to take us right away. He's the strong and silent type -- just like my teen. The two of them bonded over long stretches of silence. In the end, my kid got the best haircut of his life. We will be back. 1 Star but Really Zero Stars. Why ? Horrible 5 minute haircut $20 Wayne cut my hair (No Fade as requested) just a quick trim. While he was cutting my hair I could see his hands couldn't stop shaking. Nothing personal but If he has arthritis he shouldn't be cutting anyone's hair. What if he seriously injures someone. Not me - First and Last time I go there. $20 for the worst Haircut Ever !! I've been hunting for a good place to get my cuts now that I'm back in San Jose. Jack was the one who cut my hair, and he was great. Really friendly, conversational, and a joker. The price kind of made me weep a little, but it was such a great experience that I was okay with it. (I think this place is more of a $$ place than a $ place.) Like the first reviewer, I too have been getting my hair cut by Jack and Wayne since the first Bush Administration. It was sad to see Country Club Barbers go, but I'm glad I can get my hair cut by them no matter where. Unfortunately, I now live in San Francisco so I don't get to make it down there as often as I used to. But if I go to see my parents in San Jose and I happen to need a haircut, I stop in. This is one of the best haircuts I've gotten in a long time. I'm glad I tried this place. A couple things about the business. First, the yelp listing says no appointment is necessary but unless it's completely dead in there they'll want you to call ahead. Second, the listing also says they accept credit cards; they do not. There is a liquor store next door that has an ATM machine that charges $3 to use. read more

Was a customer of Wayne and Jack back when they has Country Club Barber in the Camden/Almaden Exp Plaza. They are here now, and still give great cuts. My current barber retired, so it was time to find someplace new. Almaden Barbers was conveniently located. When I visited in the early mid-week afternoon, they have 4 barbers working with four patrons and nobody waiting. I was taken in very quickly by Mr. Do. ive seen this place before, mostly because i go to my art class next door, but ive never actually been INSIDE of it. when i pass by its always closed, at least thats what i think because its always so dark and i never see people inside there, they dont even show you what time they open or close. besides, whenever i look in there its always clustered with magazines and papers and they only have like 3 or 4 stations. read more
