The people are very friendly, and will search out the perfect tree for you. They've also got a good range of cheap stands (less than £20), which is where we got ours from (after searching out the WHOLE of Bristol). There's a really good chance of finding the perfect tree in this area.

It's worth the drive out here as you're bound to get a tree a lot cheaper than you would at any of the places in the centre of town. They have different types too, from Nordmand Firs (apparently the fancy one) to traditional trees that drop their needles. The staff will be happy to un-net any tree you want to look at, and will stand holding it while you assess its suitability. Line it up next to their height chart to get a price, take the ticket the friendly gent gives you and all you have to is pay for it in their makeshift hut whilst a cadet nets it up for you. I can't recommend this place enough - if you haven't got a tree already, make the trip, otherwise keep it firmly in mind for next year's festivities.

In The Garden Shop of Henleaze I have found just that, and more. A haven for any plant or flower lover, the outside of this store is packed wall to wall with every herb, bulb, seed, sprouting and flower you can imagine. With garden furniture, garden ponds and greenhouses to boot I was blown away by the choice - and this was just outside. Inside the store is every dog food, accessory, bird box, item of gardening clothing - anything you would expect from a high quality good sized garden centre in a smaller more personal shop. An enormous selection of shallots (I love 'em) and a plethora of information behind the counter - come here for all your gardening needs.

Very simply, it does exactly as it says on the tin. They provide wood in all types, shapes and sizes and they provide things make of wood. They have an ample wood store out back and a good workshop too. They're friendly, polite and efficient. I couldn't wish for more.

I found this shop when I was looking for a Victorian fireplace for my previous flat, and it was just the job: they had a fireplace with a cast iron shelf, so no need for a surround - exactly what I needed to bring my lounge back to its original glory. If you don't find exactly what you want, however, they can custom build surrounds to match your exact requirements, and they also offer a repair and restoration service if you have an original fireplace in need of some TLC. They offer a (fairly pricey) fitting service, which is convenient if like me you're no handy DIY expert.

We're about to get a hearth, surround and woodburner from them, and use their installation service, plus get a small bedroom fireplace repaired and restored, and it's been a joy dealing with them so far - will update once all work complete. All the above work was completed to our total satisfaction and we've also had them restore a second cast iron fireplace - back to black, with a slight repair and replacement bars, it looks as good as new.
