Don't go out of your way especially to visit, though, unless you are a bagpipe fanatic. The courtyard is also full of various bookies with differing odds, so you can choose whoever's best for your horse (though I'm assuming this is standard for all courses). The food isn't anything to write home about but it's reasonably priced and quickly served. The main issue was the bar. I always find it funny when the only lager on tap in a Scottish bar is Foster's and not Tenants. I also find it funny (and by that I mean horrifically annoying) when a group of bar staff don't know who's working what area of the bar and subsequenly ignore a whole section of the bar for so long people start moving. The bar is broken into one main serving area and two smaller side serving areas. They had two staff working one of the small side bits, and one member of staff working half of the large main bit. We were unfortunate enough to be stuck in the ignored area until we piped up to ask if it was a no-serve area. We received no apology, though they sorted the unequal serving shortly thereafter. You may not expect top service in this kind of place, but you do expect a bit of common sense. I also found it interesting that it was nearly impossible to reach the race by public transportation. So, good for the races, but come ready to be patient and with a DD!

Why not become a member of English heritage to be able to visit & enjoy the day. The Hermitage at this site is particularly interesting to see and visit. Audio tours are available, which gives a verbal history rather than reading lots of boards, there are some boards around the castle. Toilets & carpark available.

I love a good castle, this is an excellent example of what a castle should look like and how they…read morechange over time. I was lucky enough to see this in the sunlight and enjoyed wondering around the site. It is an English Heritage castle, and costs unless you are a member to get in (I am not a member) but I still think it is worth a visit. The English Heritage staff were friendly although they were fairly pushy (hard sell) of membership although when I was first asked I clearly said I did not want membership, I was asked 3 more times during the process of getting my ticket, this is the only reason the site only get four stars from me. The Castle Keep is really impressive with good views.

It's just £2 to park car but free entry. The money raised is or has gone to build a cafe & toilets as there is only the standard ice cream van at present.
