You hit the Jackpot. I really don't know where to begin with this review because there's so much…read morepositive to say about this place. So, let me begin with the incredible and always helpful Amado, the general manager. Jane is life energy and smiles with tons of knowledge about the area. Transplanted from Arizona, she has made this her home for the last thirty something years. Amado has more knowledge and information that he willingly shares than anybody that you'll find in the area. That is actually, both of them have hearts of gold, and they're so pleasant to be around. As you arrive at this long green wall with a huge magenta colored door in the city itself, your imagination runs wild with what could be on the other side. As you pass through the doorway and come out the portico, an archway of boganville and flowers and a huge garden in the middle of the area, your eyes are just filled with colors of tropical flowers. Surrounding the garden all the way around are the rooms of this former ranch house converted into this unique b&b that's offered here. Also, here is a kitchen staffed with amazing local chefs creating their wonderful dishes, and the housekeepers are solid gold nice people. You will undoubtedly see the gardener wandering around cleaning the area to make sure you have and eye appealing visit he is such a nice man. For those who like to read or study? There's a sola that has a couple of guitars in it if. You like music and a library where you can just relax. In the rear accommodations, it's a private area for groups of artists that come down and stay and study and show the arts. Every aspect of this place has been thought over then rethought, then rethought until it became perfect. I can't believe it took me so long to come back for my second visit. This is completely one of the best kept secrets in the city of Oaxaca. The rates here include breakfast every day, and you can arrange for lunch if they're serving it and dinner every night. Absolutely incredible affordible pricing for the rooms. It's easily one of the best and easiest recommended accommodations I've ever made.

We had a wonderful stay at Casa Colonial. Its unassuming exterior hides a beautiful garden,…read moreincredible kitchen, sweet dalmatian and very helpful staff. We thoroughly enjoyed our breakfasts and fellow guests. Amado was helpful with restaurant and logistics recommendations in town. We enjoyed the library and were allowed to use their small laundry room to iron our clothes for a wedding we were attending. We were very comfortable in our room. The bathroom was very roomy. The water pressure was very light in the shower. Oaxaca has a water shortage, so we understood doing our part. We highly recommend Casa Colonial.

Note: I did NOT stay here, although I made friends who did and they liked it a lot, and said the AC…read morewas great, bathrooms were nice, etc. I came to the rooftop twice and absolutely loved it. Fabulous vibe, cheap drinks (50 pesos for cocktails during happy hour and 15 pesos for beers) that were pretty decent, fun activities, great space (lots of seating), etc. Very very friendly staff. All of the bartenders were lovely as were the people running the activities (mezcal tasting one night and salsa dancing the next). Would definitely stay here when I come back to Oaxaca city.

Stayed 6 days and probably wouldn't return due to sound issues…read more The good: Awesome location and something to do everyday. I really enjoyed rooftop morning yoga and my walking tour which went to the highest point overlooking the city! I stayed in the Deluxe 6 bed and the curtain blocks out most of the light. My locker was spacious and in general- the room was well designed! There was a little patio to sit on outside of the room, showers were usually open, and the room had floor lighting to avoid waking others in the night -- a fan and even AC! The rooftop was designed with outdoor "beds" that you could hang out on and there are a couple long tables which are a great place to meet people. Downstairs, the kitchen is nice and free breakfast each morning was a huge plus! Awesome that they offer cheap connections to buses south (Escondido etc) and you can easily book them up front. Hostel staff is friendly and helpful. The bad: The rooftop was extremely loud most nights, at least in the deluxe room (perhaps because of the patio area with no roof it lets in more sound). I felt like no one in my room really enjoyed how loud the rooftop was even early most nights with blaring music. I found the noise really disorienting as the deluxe rooms are marketed as a "restful" area, and although we wanted fresh air most nights we would close the patio door to block out some of the noise. The rooftop food was pretty passable - wouldn't recommend the burgers.
