This was my first time visiting Morven Park. It's a beautiful park with a garden and a historically…read more protected mansion. I went here to take some scenic pictures with my wife and daughter. We were hoping to see some blooming but it's still a little early in the season to see its full glory. There were two beautiful magnolia trees in full bloom and that was worth the visit in itself. There are some picnic tables next to the public parking lot which makes for a nice place to have a picnic. There's an equine center in the park and I'm sure it's awesome for horse enthusiasts. I'm looking forward to coming back and enjoying a nice walk with my family.

The…read morehighlight of the museum is - without a doubt - on the third floor: a huge HO-scale model railroad layout of the B&O Railroad's Metropolitan Subdivision from DC to the Brunswick Railyard (in the 1950s). The museum is free to visit (although they appreciate donations and make it easy to do so - you can leave cash or make a donation via PayPal), so it's worth stopping in even if you only have a few minutes to see the model. It's pretty incredible - definitely the largest I've seen. It's winds and just keeps going! They have staff on the third floor that who can answer questions about the model and who were just as friendly as the staff downstairs that I spoke to when I walked in. The museum has two other floors with different exhibits and displays (including one on the C&O Canal on the first floor), but the highlight is definitely that railroad model! Stop in if you have the time. It's a great way to learn a little about Brunswick and the region.

One day, driving home from work, I…read moreheard a commercial on the radio from a car company that said something like, "One-day road trip idea #347: Visit the Model Railroad Museum in Brunswick, Maryland." I said to myself, "Self, I didn't know there was a model railroad museum in Brunswick." For that matter, I didn't really know where Brunswick was. I had to go look it up on a map. I was pleased to find that it wasn't far away - just across the Point of Rocks bridge and over a bit, only like 30 minutes from my house. My 7 and 4 year old boys have always loved trains, and we've always gone out of our way to visit railroad museums. So today we went for a trip to the Brunswick Model Railroad Museum. It doesn't look like much from the outside, but there are actually four floors of stuff inside. Admission was like $6 per adult and $3 per kid (check the web site to be sure), and I though it was worth the price of admission. On the first floor, there is a National Park Service small museum about the history of Brunswick and the railroad and canal traffic that built the town. Plus there is a gift shop and very nice, clean restrooms. Down in the basement, they had a special setup of a G Scale model railroad for the holidays. I'm not sure what they put in there when the holiday train isn't up. On the second floor are static displays of what life was like during the Victorian Age. Right as you walk in the door from the stairs, there are three colored sheets of questions you can ask your kids to help them think about and learn from the exhibits. I thought they were very useful and got us to appreciate the modern conveniences we have in our lives today. On the third floor was a very large model railroad layout that started in Washington, DC, and followed the train through Silver Spring and Point of Rocks out past Brunswick. There were some small red buttons for kids to push that made sound effects along the way. It was a nicely done setup, and the boys and I enjoyed walking back and forth checking out the scenery and watching the model trains go by. Given the choice between going to the Northern Virginia Model Railroad Museum in Vienna and coming here to Brunswick, I think this one was better. There was a lot more to see here. The down side is that you'll save some money at the Vienna museum because they don't charge admission (but they're only open one Saturday per month), and they don't have a gift shop, so your kids won't be whining asking you to buy them $50 model train sets.

This non-profit museum is one of few specifically representing African Art. Mrs. Doris Ligon is the founder and director. She is extremely knowledgeable of the pieces and her compassion shows. They are responsible for the inclusion of an African Unit for Howard County elementary schools. Third graders learn about Kenya and sixth graders, Ghana. They are planning to go back to South Africa in 2021 for 14 days with an opportunity to go to Dubai or Egypt for three days pre or post trip. They were authors present of the books Children Are Gifts, Thank You God series, and The Gift of Criticism and others. Soon they will host a Bishop from the Largest African church of Angola and a jazz event soon! I was so inspired, I became a member and volunteer!

Everything is squeezed into three rooms, so you could easily see it all in 15 minutes, but Ligon is talkative (in a charming way), so we were there for about an hour. I wouldn't go to Columbia just to see it, but if you're there, it's worth a visit.

(e)merge art fair was a huge disappointment…read more.. First, I purchased the Gilt City VIP Party and Preview Tickets, for a $65 for a $5 savings... Frankly, I thought Gilt would have vetted this 'VIP party' ...There was NOTHING VIP about the VIP PARTY... perhaps I should have read the fine print more clearly --- no complimentary cocktail, canapes, blah blah blah....there would have been no difference from viewing this art show any other day or time. Speaking of cocktails, they had ONE bartender at the main bar. Then one outside by the pool...one on the second floor. Interestingly enough, I just paid $65 for this event and NOT one cocktail included. When I went to buy a beer by the pool, the sign said 'Domestic Beer $5, Imported Beer $6.' The woman asked me for $8, and I told her the sign in front of her said $6. She said the price was $8 for this event. Nice. Clearly, the high price of the VIP Party and just the $15 show fee are to subsidize the Capital Skyline because no one would come here otherwise... Second, this show was questionable for both quality and quantity. It was definitely quite sparse... As someone who attended last year, I am pretty confident in saying that there were far more exhibitors and far more international exhibitors last year. Whilst there were a few nice pieces here and there, the rest of the works reminded me of the Artomatic, which I greatly support as a wonderful effort in promoting the arts to the community at large but is not curated or presented as a professional art show. The (e)merge art fair is a big #FAIL... If they seek to survive in DC, they will need to do a better job of curating because no one is going to continue to pay this kind of entry fee to subsidize a motel. *(e)merge art fair, if you would like to hire me, I consult on business strategy including revenue strategy for cultural arts organizations, so ping me...

Since Covid ended our family has been frequent patrons of the Kennedy Center, Wicked being our 4th…read moreevent in less than 1 year. I've always heard good things and knew nothing about the plot or story of Wicked. Did a weekday matinee which was much less stressful to get to, though there are a lot of students/kids which I hadn't figured on. I used the brand new Ashburn Metro station to go into DC and it was awesome. Set and costume design were amazing and the story was a interesting spin on the original that we're all familiar with. To be honest, the tunes were not quite as catchy as some of the others that I've seen this year but good nonetheless. I was in the top balcony b/c seats were very inexpensive but to be honest a bit hard to hear and a bit of a vertigo if you have to walk down the steep stairs. I think in the future, I'll try to keep everything at the orchestra level.

This is a very small but beautiful museum that displays bonsai trees and tells the history behind…read morethem. It is located in the US National Arboretum. They have Chinese and Japanese exhibits that explain the different cultural influences on the art of growing bonsai trees. I learned about the significance of these trees, particularly the idea of bonsai diplomacy, and read very fascinating stories.
