rows of grape vines in a vineyard
    Liz B.

The time we spent at this winery was exceptional. We called the winery on a Monday unsure if tours were happening, and Martin welcomed us eagerly. He took his time with us explaining the wines, the vineyard/land, and the surrounding areas. The wines were delicious - one of the best Chardonnay's I've been introduced to recently. It truly felt like a vip experience that we won't forget. Highly recommend!

It's about a 2.5 mile drive from the Bay Area but if you love wine for a reasonable price then this is worth checking out. Hopland is not as commercialized as Napa or Sonoma. It actually an hour drive from Healdsburg. You can expect smaller mom and pops wineries and a friendly staff. In downtown is where all the action is for the Passport event. The ticket is $45 online and $55 at the door (purchase at any participating Hopland winery). It covers the entire weekend and there are at least 2 stations at every winery to taste any wine you desire on the list. The bottles of wine are really cheap and its much cheaper to purchase them in cases. You can also expect food at all the wineries varying from fresh BBQ to finger food. There are a lot od delicious options so be preparred to get drunk and munch along the way as you visit all the wineries. You have to drive to some of the wineries that are a bit further out but they have a seperate shuttle pass you can purchase if you need a DD. I also found out that if you become a DD, you can eat at all the winieries for free. I think that sucks all the fun out of this event but if you are a foodie and not a drinker its pretty cool. My favorite is Brutocao because they have the best fall off the bones rib and grape stomping with your feet activity. The wine is good too. Enjoy!

It was their Italian wines (Primitivo, Docetto, Quadriga, and Uber Tuscan) that first caught our attention. Absolutely delicious and immediately drinkable reds, though any could of course benefit from a little nap to round out even more. Maybe it's just me, but you really can pick up the hints of lavender in these big reds, which really speaks to the terroir of the Anderson Valley grape sourcing. We also loved their Bliss label of more cost-conscious yet equally delicious wines. Their rose really shines under this label and makes for superb hot sunny day drinking. Also, their sparkling rose and brut do NOT disappoint. Their tasting room in Hopland, while not as charming as the Philo garden and barn, is still inviting. They have a tasting available daily, with indoor as well as outdoor patio seating. You can apply tasting fees to any purchase you make. Don't miss Brutocao on your next trip along 101 to Northern California.

Our favorite wine ones here are the Jaxzin, Hales Zinfandel, Wedding Cake Primitivo. Walk up the flagstone steps to the entrance and on a nice day sit out on the deck enjoying the views overlooking the vineyards. Don't forget to bring a picnic or charcuterie board when visiting.
