Update Dec 2022 Yes you are correct. Risource Energy did install my system. But they were under the "umbrella" of Alternate Energy. And when Risource shut down, you did send a letter stating that you would be taking over the contracts so we wouldn't be stranded. But, after multiple calls, my problem still remains. And after reading your response, it still remains the same. THAT THERE IS NOTHING YOU CAN DO ABOUT IT!? So how do you propose to make me happy? We have used AE for 2 PV installs and 2 SWH installs on our homes. They were reputable until our recent SWH install on 5/2021. Upon inquiring with AE why our electric bill had a sudden spike in usage/ cost, they came to check our PV system which was okay. It was upon further research, that the SWH AE installed was not placed in the optimal location on our roof forcing our water heater to be on 24/7 as it never reached its peak performance. This resulted in our electric bill skyrocketing more than $500/mo. for more than 3 months. AE sent a tech to assess our SWH panels and upon their tech's review, the panels were facing the wrong way. AE came and relocated the panels but has not apologized, nor acknowledged their negligence, or offered any compensation for the unnecessary electric costs that I assumed. After many emails (to Yuko Ahina) and phone calls trying to get this issue resolved, I have yet to hear from anyone at AE. Furthermore, this city permit for the SWH is still open (job completed 4/2021) along with another permit they opened back in 11/2017 for a SWH that never was installed, this permit remains open as well. ------Response to Alternate Energy's response: July 3, 2022 To the Management at Alternate Engery, Thank you for taking the time to respond. I had no luck with any response from your company addressing this issue since I first inquired about it months ago. It was only until I reached out to the Better Business Bureau, Alternate Energy have provided an explanation. The main reason I purchased a solar water heater system was to decrease my overall electric costl. I understood a system like this would provide this benefit. In response to your letter dated June 29, 2022, you mentioned I approved the location of the solar water heater panels which your company installed on my roof back in May 2021. Since the panels weren't facing the sun, the water was never hot (at all) forcing the water heater to be on 24/7 which increased my electric bill dramatically. Although I did not advise this, but if I did, as you cited, it raises a few questions. If your statement bears any truth, are you saying Alternate Energy approved selling a product that provided no benefit to the consumer where in fact, my monthly electric bill was doubled from $250/mo to $500/mo because the panels were facing the wrong way? With Alternate Energy's expertise and experience, I would have hoped Alternate Energy would have presented me with the consequences and possibly suggest a different location of the panels so that I could maximize my benefit with your product. Why would I spend thousands of dollars on a system that would provide no benefit to me AND increased my overall electric bill from before I purchased this system? Furthermore, the city permit for this installation remains open for a service that was completed 14 months ago. Alternate Energy also applied for a city permit for this same service in 2017, but no installation was provided at that time, but the permit also remains opened, 5 years later. Do not recommend Alternate Energy - we initially went with this company as we were initially impressed with the company. Expect NO customer service once the installation is complete. Agree with other comments that there is NO CUSTOMER SERVICE at all. Our inverter box burned out and the electrician came out...said, they are so busy, if we don't hear from them in a week, WE are to call them back. After a week, we called back and go so much run around - technicians answering the phone gives so much run around. We will be without PV service for TWO MONTHS, and they didn't seem to care. I had solar panels/ battery packs installed @ my residence recently. They damaged my copper gutters and did not inform me of the bent gutter but I did not want to make drama about this because I know that solar panels are bulky and difficult to install on my roof . Fast forward a few months later and I had an issue with reconnecting the modem to my system. I agreed to the service charge and my system was online again. They sent me the invoice which I mistakenly thought I had paid because of all the paperwork I had to sign before the technician was scheduled. Long story short I was delinquent for 2 months which I was unaware of. I promptly paid the bill but was assessed a $50.00 late fee($25.00/month). I wished they would have emailed me the balance monthly instead of 3 months after the initial invoice. I own a business and understand people forget or out of town/vacation and simply forget or misplace the bill and I never charge a late fee. The manager refused to waive the late fee. I initially was not going to post a review but these guys need to be exposed. There was no loss of manpower or time off in their end. I spent thousands of dollars on solar/ batteries from this company and this so called " local company" that has been in business for decades treats their customers like this. No goodwill or loyalty was offered. Customer service is also poor and I dread every time I have to call them for an issue because they never get back to me unless I call them multiple times and then get transferred to another dept and then I have to leave a message which then does not get returned . They were really nice when they wanted my business but once the job was completed the courtesy ends. The technician also lost the screw for the modem panel and left the panel open so I had to prop something against the door to close so I guess the quality of work is in question also. read more

We purchased a new home and reached out using Yelp to locate the right company to get the job done so we thoughtWe invested over $50,000 for everything solar, to AC and PV. We got a smooth talking sales person, Roy Skaggs who I would never want to deal with again. Still waiting for my PV to be turned on and my battery pack still hanging on the wall doing nothing for me. One of our 4 split AC doesn't get the room cold cause Roy didn't account for our high ceiling. Roy blames everyone else but himself and thinks he is doing his job. I'm disappointed in the company's lack of professionalism. Still waiting for the owner of the company to call me back with my concerns. Hope to hear from Bruce soon. These guys are a joke! I had a defective panel and asked them to look at it. I thought the panels were under warranty, but they have to charge me for $152 for maintenance of their vehicles etc. Whatever. So they say the micro inverter is the problem and they replaced it. I still have the same problem. I had called them two weeks after and their excuse is the system needs to adjust. This was back in 11/22. I tried calling numerous times and each time, their response is we will get back with you because there is a log waiting list. No one has been getting back to me. I just called 5/30 and spoke with Camille. I told her I still have the same issue and it has been months with no response. She started laughing and said we will get back to you. Here's an update to my last review. I got a new Project Developer. His name is Radford Nakamura and he was very responsive and patiently answered all of my questions as well as physically showed me the potential layouts of my PV system upgrades. Radford explained all of the pros and cons of both a regular battery add-on compared with the HECO battery bonus program. We went up onto my roof to look at potential locations for additional panels because I wanted it to be placed on the portion of our patio roof that did not have an enclosed ceiling (open joists). (Frank, the other Project Developer would not take the time). Now that I have Radford's contact, I'm sure it will be much easier to get service and/or help getting the appropriate service. I'll update this once the project is complete to provide those interested in a full review of the project. read more

Updating, Well, all I can say is they are as usual non responsive. It has been over three months. I am still waiting for a call from Jim or Roy. In response to my Yelp posting, a Manager responded saying he has asked Kayne or Abi to contact me. He said it's been a busy week so they couldn't contact me but assured me they will call on Monday. I sent a reply back saying, why are you asking them when they are the cause. Obviously, he did not get my response as Kayne contacted me on Monday. Kayne is the same person I referred to in my posting, as the Communication/P V manager. He mentioned that I made a Yelp posting so he is calling. He obviously did not read my Yelp posting. I told him it was about their inability to correct the problem with the Consumption/Production monitoring. I asked why I was not serviced and he kept saying, I'm sorry. I told him I want to know why they could not correct the problem. He was evasive and could not provide an answer. I told him he is obviously discriminating against me, because I don't think he treated others like me. If a Manager who is responsible to provide this service to me cannot tell me why, than maybe his bosses should be able to tell me. For information, the Enlighten program keeps data from the day it is connected. This data will show that data collection will change upon correction of the program by Enphase by my request. Therefore I believe they do not have the skills necessary to trouble shoot and correct discrepancies. If he felt I was wrong why didn't he show me that I am wrong. I don't know why they are so adamant that I am wrong. Review of the Enlighten data is evidence that I am correct. I told him, they should not be fully compensated for the work because they failed to provide me with fully usable product and that I am due a refund for incomplete work. He said he cannot authorize it. He said he will talk to his bosses in the morning and I will get a call from either Jim or Roy. It has been three months and I'm still waiting. Either he did not talk to them or Alternate Energy management is non responsive too. As the saying goes, "if management is irresponsible, so will their subordinates". DON'T GET YOURSELF IN MY SITUATION, CALL SOMEONE ELSE. I would like to close with the old saying," WHAT GOES AROUND COMES AROUND", and what an old Hawaiian man used to tell me when I was growing up. it took six months from purchase to completion due to long permit process by city&county, repairing damaged roof tiles, and final implementation of the panel and battery monitoring software, but it was worth it. actual installation of the solar panels took only two days, and all AEI workers were professional, friendly and hard-working throughout. read more

Alternate Energy did the Mitsubishi split AC in our new home and did a great job! In one day we had multiple rooms finished with cool and quiet air. From beginning to finish we were involved as we received designs of what the install would look like and did! They also took care of the permits so we didn't have to deal with anything. First off, got my pvs installed in 2014. everything was great, actually still is. maybe from sometime in 2015, i noticed i wasnt getting any energy reports via email anymore. it would state that my home was not producing. it wasnt something i was in a rush to do. i did look up some troubleshooting online at the time and never got around to it. fast foward to 2019, it was then bugging me and i wanted to resolve it. i looked more into it and then made a call to enphase. the rep told me to go look at my unit and that it should be inside my home somewhere or in the garage. i thought that was strange but i knew where it was. it was outside next to my main panel. anyways, screen was all messed up and he clearly stated that it shouldnt have been installed outside, especially outside in a hot panel with no air flow. its not rated to be outdoors. theres the problem right there. he said for a new one it would be about 1k. i talked to him a little bit more about it and then he admitted that the installer shouldnt have installed it outside. i asked what he thought of me going after the company for a replacement, and of course, he said he would. so, i tried contacting someone at alternate energy regarding my situation after my call to enphase. i dealt with a lady who i was only able to speak to once, rest were via text messages. seems like everytime i called she was screening calls and didnt answer. lets say i got nowhere with her to the point of her not texting me back. so, i tried again maybe 3 weeks ago and spoke with a different female. she said she would let the appropriate party know about it and have them call me back. i know i aint getting no calls from anyone at alternate. at time of install i would of gave 5 stars, as of now, just 1. About a year ago I had a 18 panel PV system with a Tesla battery installed by AEI and was pleased with the $26 a month bill I had been receiving. However, several months ago my bill spiked to over $150 after which I then notified Faith at AEI. She transferred to the tech department who were a bit slow in resolving the issue which I assume to be an inexperienced troubleshooter as this lasted for several months. The problem was finally identified as a bad battery, but unfortunately was told that they did not have any spares and it would have to be ordered. Thankfully, Faith on my behalf, requested they pull a battery scheduled for a current installation to get me back in service. A day after the problem was identified, technician Trevor arrived with the replacement battery and the system was back up in 2 hours! Additionally, AEI reimbursed me for the extra HECO charges I had incurred during the down time thanks to Roy. As no system is perfect and malfunctions/failures are inevitable, it is the AEI people trying their best and the company who try to do what's right is what is important. Not withstanding the delayed troubleshooting period, I am happy with the outcome! Thanks Faith, Trevor, Roy at AEI. A final note, when you have a PV with the Tesla battery, Tesla has a phone app which in a simple animation depicts the flow of power between the rooftop PV panels, the Tesla battery, HECO and your home. This is an important tool which you should monitor frequently to check if your system is operating normally. During the day, you should see power being consumed by your home and your battery charging (if its not fully charged). At night, you should see power flowing from your battery to your home with nothing coming from the panels. Also you will see power going to or coming from HECO depending on your power demand. Be aware that during cloudy/rainy days, the panel is low. On sunny days, the battery will be fully charged by the afternoon. read more

Notified Alternate Energy mid November 2022 that 7 of my PV panels are not working. Evidently they are having problems with their supplier. They are unable to give me any expected date when they can repair. It's been 2 1/2 months. They are evidently still installing new. Not sure why they can't take parts from new panels to honor their warranty. read more

So, it's been 12 years since our house was built and with it came the Solar Water Heater. I had to dig through some paperwork, and luckily the original owner of the house kept all the documents and I was able to track down Alternate Energy as the original installer of the Solar Water Heating system. I initially called about getting a temperature gauge replaced, as one of three was not working. The gauge itself came off but the stem was still stuck in there. I found out they charge a base fee of $150 for a service call, even though the part itself was less than $25. I spoke to Dean, one of their senior technicians, who asked me when the last time I had the systems serviced. Well, aside from simply draining the water tank once a year, the Solar Water Heating system hadn't been serviced since we bought the house 8 years ago! That's when Dean suggested I opt for a Full System maintenance. It goes for $500, but with a $100 Hawai'i Energy instant rebate (good through June 30, 2018 by the way), I only had to pay $400 plus the cost of the temperature gauge. $500 you say! Eh, that's highway robbery, as my mom would say in her best Filipino accent...especially since the system is working despite the inoperable temperature gauge. Well, we figured it was probably time for the system to be serviced anyway, and besides, we are trying to get the house ready for a sale, so we thought it was worth the "investment" to get the system checked out...if not for us, then for the future residents. We were initially scheduled for Friday morning service, between 8:00 AM and 11:00 AM (it takes about 3 hours for the full service). Used to military precision and timeliness, I thought Dean would be at the house promptly at 8:00. When it became apparent he wouldn't be at the house by 8:30 AM, that's when I called and was told he is "right around the corner". Well, "right around the corner" meant more like 15 more minutes than "right around the corner". I swear, I can never get used to Island time! So it was probably close to 8:45 AM by the time Dean arrived and he immediately got started. He flushed the water from the solar collectors, went up the roof to check for leaks, replaced worn and weathered insulation, and cleaned the panels. It took him a while to finish what he had to get done on the roof as the pitch of the roof was steeper than he would like it to be. He then flushed the water tank of impurities, replaced the anode rod (the old one was so corroded, it looked like it had been dipped in some caustic acid as there was hardly anything left of it), replaced the temperature gauge, verified all other gauges were operational, and checked the circulating pump. At one point, he actually had to take the pump apart as he suspected there was some debris preventing it from working properly...and sure enough, there was considerable debris in it. Once he cleaned it up and put it back together, it was humming like new. Dean was thorough and knew what he was doing. He even took the time to impart some knowledge, educating me on what to do if I have to leave for an extended period of time. He informed me I had to flush the solar collectors every 6 months in addition to the water tank. He even took the time to check out my electric water heater with a timer to make sure it was in good working condition...it was. He even suggested certain procedures for resetting the water heater as well as suggestions for timer settings. All in all, I was very pleased with Dean's quality of work...although I have a few suggestions for Alternate Energy: 1. For a work order, it would be beneficial to include what comes with a Full System maintenance. A single page informational sheet was e-mailed to me a couple of days prior to the service, but I would prefer to see the tasks performed right on the work order so it would clearly illustrate what was accomplished and serve as "proof" for future reference or future owners. 2. Make it clear to customers when scheduling maintenance, that the time provided is more like a "range" than a strict timeline. It was like waiting on the cable guy to show up, between 8:00 AM and 11:00 AM. I requested a call from Dean prior to arrival, but I didn't get that...they probably thought since I called, that constitutes a call from them. 3. Dean provided some useful information for maintaining the system. It would be great if Alternate Energy made instructional videos and posted them on their website for their customers to refer to. read more

With all the news coming out of HECO and the potential for excess charges to new PV owners, it might not seem like a good time to install PV. But after talking to Mark Ida from Alternate Energy,we decided to go ahead and install our PV now, so we could still take advantage of the tax credits available to us. He was patient and professional and answered all our questions and concerns. He was even there on installation day to make sure the day went smoothly. We had Alternate Energy put in our PV unit and AC for my home office last year. We were very impressed with their commitment to service and professionalism. They provided us with excellent advice regarding how big a system we needed and how to prepare our garage roof for the panels. This year we had to move our cable to reroof our home. We had gotten agreement from AE to move our cable before installing the new roof. We forgot to schedule their work, but when we called, they were at our house w/in 2 days to do the job. I really don't know where to start. We originally got out system installed 3.5 years ago and we were​ really happy with the quick and fast install. We heard some really good things about this company from our friends who hired them so we decided to follow and pay the extra money to go with Alternate Energy. 6 months later our solar Wifi repeater went down so we were unable to view our solar production. When I called in to get a replacement I was told this was not covered by the warranty. I guess that wasn't part of the 20-year​ warranty ok fine. A year later after the install,​ I received​e a $400 dollar electric bill and I called them and they said "it wasn't their responsibility to keep track of your system", ok fine again. I asked if they would pay for the electric bill and they said no. 2 years after it​ broke the first time it broke again and I received​​d another $400 dollar electric bill. I didn't even bother to ask and if they would pay for it. I just asked when they could come out to fix it and was surprised​ to find out that I would be charged $50 bucks an hour for their technician to fix it. When I asked why was I being charged when I have a 20-year warranty they said only the parts were​ covered and not the labor. Then​ for a cherry topper,​ I was never informed that they would send me a bill via email, I was waiting for some type of bill in the mail and never got it. ​Then​ my wife tells me we have a late fee on an email. So I called them to ask for the late fee to be removed because I never received​ notification I would get a bill via email and they said the "billing department is on lunch and they would call me back". I waited​ all day and no one called me back so I called the next day. Then​ the billing person tells me they did notify me via email the day before and that I got denied for waiving the late fee. I told the billing lady I was promised​ a callback​ and not an email. O well at this point I wasn't surprised by their poor customer service skills. I would look elsewhere​​ if you were looking to get solar installed at your place. There are cheaper places out there with better customer service, save your money. I feel the need to leave this review because 6years ago we went with this company to install 4 Mitsubishi AC units around our house. We have had issues with the units, had pseudo "repair" but were told it was due to placement, etc (which they played in part where to install initially) that is wasn't working well. And on top of that we had to wait so long for a part they told us was "back ordered" which I found out was not true when I contacted a Mitsubishi parts center in the mainland out of frustration. Not knowing any better we have dealt with it until this year because our investment in this system cost so much. We found a different company to replace 2 of the units because they are not working anymore. But.. when they inspected our units we were told one of the outer units was a older model that wasn't in line with all the other units. Also we were told that we should have had a maintenance plan in place to keep the units running properly which the new company provides. This is something I had asked for over the years but was always brushed off as "but it's working ya?" We would have to charge you a ridiculous amount just to go there per hour. The new company actually explained certain things to do, watch out for, and their warranty is MUCH longer. **I must mention as miffed as I am with the company, there are GOOD workers there who tried to help us as much as they could. You know it's not good when people start answers with "Well............." But of course by then we were already stuck. I finally got A/C entire house with them. It took for two days for them to install the Mitsubishi A/C and did an amazing work! We had a great all around experience with AE! We had 24 panels and two Tesla Powerwalls installed in July of 2019. I got quotes from 4 companies and I choose AE because two neighbors said they had good customer service experiences. This was important to me because if wanted to know if something broke I would receive prompt responses and repairs. AE did just that. Installation crew were professional, and did a great job. They even let me keep a big Powerwall box for my son to play with! In October 2020, one of our Powerwalls failed. Tesla replaced it under the ten year warranty and AE had a crew out to our house to replace it within a few days of receiving the new Powerwall from Tesla. Their solar system warranty service was horrible. It took 49 days and numerous complaint phone calls, a complaint to the BBB and a letter to them. First complaint May 23 followed by several calls. Finally their service crew came on June 10. They left without the system working. I complained immediately and many times thereafter and they gave me some incomprehensible excuses that some mainland company need to turn it on and approve. But nothing happened until I finally filed a complaint with the BBB on July 5, 2019 and sent them a letter on July 6 and left a nasty call on their answering machine. On July 11 they finally came made the 1/2 hour repair and it works and produces electricity. Don't use them! read more

The problem with reviews is you never know 2 sides of the story, I believe no company can satisfy everyone but the company's that try their best are the ones you got to go with. That's why I'll stick with alternate Energy, I wrote a bad review earlier but after thinking of all the negative outcome it was wrong of me because I don't really know what that worker had to deal with today but I can say she was very nice, thank you Mari who took over and made everything right! They are sending someone over tomorrow morning, why am I giving the 5 star before they even come? I realized my PV panels were not reporting info back to our system. I have called repeatedly over the last few months to get a hold of the Solar Department and they have failed to give me a call back. My system is still under warranty, but it is impossible to get a call back from this company to come troubleshoot the system. Do not recommend due to service department. read more

6/20/19 Update: I received a call from the manager Roy and we had a good discussion on the issues, and together we identified process areas for improvement. Roy was receptive to my concerns. My invoice was adjusted for the service and parts. Hopefully Roy implements internal fixes to the customer service process so that issues like mine do not escalate unnecessarily.
