Check-in was prompt with the host and included a complimentary coat check. The restaurant was modern and staff were super cordial throughout the evening. Started off with the XO Beef tartare and it was tasty. The toast was fresh and the beef was tasty, topped with some creme fraiche. Portions were perfect for a couple diners. Moved on to the Wiener Schnitzel with veal and it was tasty. The veal was lightly breaded and lightly fried served with a potato salad along with a lingonberry side. Portions were gigantic and the entree could easily be shared for a couple diners. Finished off the meal with the Bienenstitch and it was tasty. This was a lighter way to finish off the meal. Again...portions were gigantic and perfect for a couple diners. It was interesting to see that the vast majority of diners were tourists...

really good innovative food with a fun modern twist. kind of pricey, but great place for a night…read moreout. attentive staff and dark moody interior that i like. good lighting and ambiance! vague asian influence in the dishes, with like only one Austrian dish. gorgeous presentation on all the dishes, loved the ceramics they were served on! bread and butter was really fresh - the butter was whipped and had a fresh creamy flavor. kale salad was just a regular kale salad tbh. good flavor pairings and textural variety but nothing super special. sashimi was salmon, and really fresh and good flavor texturally. ponzo was a bit overpowering, and led to the sashimi tasting a bit like smoked salmon. still overall good flavors. braised lamb was really good. good color and crust on the meat, tender cook and melts in your mouth. not as gamey as other lamb I've tried as restaurants - still definitely a lamby taste but balanced well with the other flavors.

Haas-Beisl is an old Viennese Beisl in the coolest part of the Margareten neighborhood. Without a…read moredoubt this establishment is extremely charming in appearance - both outside and inside. It is on the small side but that only adds to the charming atmosphere. The food here is very decent - think tasty classic Viennese and Austrian specialties. I was there recently because they had a special menu with a Pumpkin Cream soup, mixed salad, and a Tirolean Gröstl which I always like a lot. (By the way they also had as a decoration the largest pumpkin I have seen in Vienna this year.) There are lots of old fotos on the wall which are interesting to look at .... but be careful as we sat at a table underneath an old Rapid Vienna team photo which I never would have done if I had noticed it before sitting down. I felt like writing "Austria Wien Rules" underneath that foto, but I resisted the temptation as I didn't want to get thrown out before devouring the authentic Gröstl. Now what are some of the negatives? Haas-Beisl certainly is a little bit too "Bieder" for any real hipster. Perhaps for some, it might be a little too smoky (I didn't think so but I'm not that vigilante about smoking like I know some people are). But to me, I think there is only one major negative - the service. This is a Beisl filled with Stammgäste (regulars) whom the wait staff all know and seem to treat pretty well but those same waiters can be pretty perfunctory and unsmiling to outsiders. If you are visiting Vienna and feel that you have somehow missed out on the "mürrisch Kellner" (grumpy waiter) treatment, dine here and there is a good chance you will experience it in live action!!

The presentation of the food here is also very artistically done. I recently enjoyed a paprika-coconut soup here. I wish it could have been a one more ladle larger portion as the bowl did not really contain a great amount of this tasty soup. A lightly fried Wels filet (catfish) was perfectly done and served over a zucchini bean salad. Water and salt & pepper were brought to the table upon request. The only annoying thing here was being grilled by the chef/owner about taking photos in the restaurant. He certainly could have been friendlier about this. And c'mon - it's 2017 and people are taking photos in restaurants. In fact I've done so in hundreds of restaurants in Vienna and elsewhere with no problem and in actuality it has been good free publicity for the restaurant. Anyway other than feeling lectured to - Duspara is a good creative restaurant.

We came on a Thursday evening as a party of five and were seated promptly (with reservation). As many others have noted, the ambiance is intricate, quirky, and packed with character. Every booth is a mini shrine to celebrity guests; ours was lined with plaques from dignitaries and ambassadors galore -- a conversation starter for sure. While the setting is memorable, the food could use more attention. We tried the asparagus two ways (steamed and fried), asparagus with salmon, and asparagus risotto. The white asparagus itself was well-prepared, but the accompanying dishes fell short. The risotto was overly soft and lacked any discernible grains, the salmon was dry, and overall, the sides didn't match the quality of the star ingredient. Prices are high, though arguably fitting for the ambiance and service. In short: a fun and unique night out with lots of flair, but I'd love to see the kitchen step up to match the setting.
