The Falaise House literally refreshed my opinion of life…read more Arriving in the sparkling Henley On Thames, my girl and I easily located Falaise after getting dumped off at the Henley railway station. We didn't even realize it while booking, but the location is tremendous. It is at the peak of town, so all we had to do was roll out of bed and we were right into the heart of the place. Upon first arrival, we were greeted by "Jane" who was so friendly that I had forgotten humans could be that nice. My girlfriend and I looked at each other in shock after our interaction with her, it was so pleasant. She wrote down restaurants we should check out in town for lunch and even wrote down the prices which she had memorized. She even volunteered to print tickets to a show we were going to for us!! Our room was such a fresh, lush haven of clean, white tones. The pillows soaked our heads in glory and the whole vibe was so fantastic. There was a curious amount of horse imagery in the room, but hey you only live once. May as well horse around. Yak yak yak. Anyways the shower was great and the soap/shampoo/moisturizer supplied smelled amazing. The room was also supplied with hot chocolate, cookies, and tea for our enjoyment. At first I didn't understand the wifi situation which concerned us, but after flipping through the book in the bedside table, we found the code for it and it was super fast! That book also has menus and local information, use it! Only two little complaints. Something was clearly wrong with our toilet and after flushing it, it would run for a LONG time, sometimes up to an hour or more. We didn't care so much, but it was a bother at night. Also, the heat was on at night after a fairly warm day. The room subsequently got very hot and I wasn't very comfortable at that point. Everything else was so amazing about Falaise House that I don't care about that anymore. Our street-side windows were great to crack open, sit on the ledge, and look at the town from above. At night it was cool to look at the ghost town of Henley. In the morning, we actually did not utilize the complementary breakfast as it ran from 7-9:30 AM which was quite early for us after a long night. Let Falaise House hold you tenderly as you visit Henley, you will not regret it!

We were greeted by Jane, one of the owners, who was such a friendly human that I thought I was in some sort of alternate reality. She knew my boyfriend's name upon arrival and greeted us at the door. She was eager to recommend places for us to eat, which ended up being very delicious. The Falaise House is an actual house - a very classy, simplistically decorated home. The rooms are rented out to customers. Our room was beautiful. A big bed, a TV on the wall, a vanity, a dresser, nightstand, and spacious bathroom. The bed was deliciously comfortable with a soft down comfortable and wildly soft pillows. The room was warm (too warm at some points), but the windows were easily opened for some fresh air. In our room there was a large binder of menus of the best places to eat in the area, along with a wifi password, which was a definite perk. Breakfast is complimentary in the morning. What an amazing, amazing place.

On August 31st, my family and I were on a tour with a wonderful guide (Jill Pretorius of Windsor…read moreDay Tours)... We had already walked all over Winchester, we were on our way to Stonehenge, we were excited and hungry, but also jet lagged and exhausted! Jill brought us to The White Lion joking that, being only 400 years old, it was practically a brand new pub! We came in (mind your head), and were immediately sat down at a big, groaning, family table! Water was served, beers and ciders followed, and then meat pies and fish and chips were ordered all around! This meal was absolutely delicious in the way that only homemade country pub food can be. The cider selection was excellent, and we left refreshed, happy, and ready to take on the rest of our day (mind you, we ALL passed out cold in the van after Stonehenge and on the way back to our hotel)! Thank you so much to the ladies of The White Lion Inn & Pub for your extremely warm hospitality!! Much love! I hope to make it back one day!

We booked the family room (one full and two twin beds) and it was very comfortable and clean and the en suite bath was a good size. The proprietors are helpful and pleasant to their guests, giving us maps of Oxford and tips on things to see and places to eat. There is a bus that stops just outside the Sportsview, but the walk to town is easy and picturesque as you cross the river. This hotel is a really good value if you are spending time in Oxford.

It was inexpensive but the location was great and served our needs perfectly for a quick night. The room was quite large, with snacks and bottled water included. The window was a little funky as was opaque, but we got some ambient light. Be aware there is no elevator, but we literally only had backpacks, so it was fine for us. Desk service was very good. He clearly explained things to us, polite and friendly. Overall, this was a clean, very serviceable budget hotel with a great location. They apparently have a deal with a nearby restaurant for a discount on their buffet, but we didn't partake.

Big cons: very oddly shaped rooms and no elevator even though the lobby is on the second floor. Loud at night with bar and street noise from below. Breakfast was also included the next morning and the eggs benedict had a perfect sauce, not too heavy. We would definitely return.

The rooms (there are only two) are modern, spotlessly clean and very well equipped. Last but most definitely not least is the breakfast! Don't feel like eating for the rest of the day? Then you won't have a problem here. I won a one night stay at this peaceful rural retreat by composing a poem about The Chilterns area…read morewhich has been published on the Visit Chilterns website. The booking by email was administered very efficiently and we extended at a cost of ninety Pounds for one extra night as my Australian friend was over. Miv, the owner asked us if there were any special dietary requirements but there are none for us. We caught,at some expense, Chiltern Railways from London Marylebone to Princes Risborough. The internet instructions I got, not from the actual B&B website, but from Google Maps or something, proved to give us the runaround. We walked in the pouring rain and I had to knock on someone else's door in a different part of town for directions as there are two streets with 'Icknield' in them. Our upstairs room was very clean, quite large with a small TV and a rocking horse, shower and comfortable bed. We were able to order an Italian meal from a local takeaway to be delivered on the first night which we ate in the kitchen. The breakfasts are superb with bacon, sausage and the usual, lovely bread and I tried Grape Nuts for the first time with yogurt and lemon curd. We walked into the quaint town on the next, much sunnier day and gazed at the lovely church and Amy Johnson's house, browsed charity shops and then caught the 300 bus to Aylesbury which I had never visited before. The 300 bus we caught back (destination High Wycombe) and this dropped us at the end of the street from the B&B (we just had to pass a crossroads). Miv gave us use of the annex lounge and kitchenette which opens onto a very large garden and I finished a crime book sitting and lying in the sun next to a farm at the end of the garden. The cats are shy - I would have liked to have stroked them. A real rural retreat from London, peaceful and some of the houses are very 'Midsomer Murders' around this area. Well done Miv for donating this prize - I've never really spent the night in a large house in The Chilterns before and her husband very kindly gave us a lift back to the station for our train to London as it was raining. I can understand a B&B owner not wanting smoking inside but I think an ashtray for the garden would be handy although we didn't really get negative comments about our cigarettes. It reminded me of New Zealand this B&B!
Never Judge a Book by it's Cover…read more Never has a statement been soo true. I would never have walked into this pub. If I had walked in, one look at the football flags on the ceiling, the dirty dated decor, dodgy loud electro music and the clientele would make me turn right around and run away. All over the walls are an eclectic mix of female film idols, drink advertisements for beverages they don't even offer and general tat all look odd and out of the place. The walls are painted in rich colours and trendy wallpaper completely juxterposed the original - old man pub - carpet. Inside there menus describe themselves as a 'shot bar and restaurant' with a picture of a flaming glass. This is possibly the funniest thing I've ever seen, as apart from the Blue Neon lights installed above the bar, this is so far from the image they really project. When I was there it appeared two 14 year old boys were manning the bar. One, clearly experienced, the other who - while polite, couldn't serve alcohol for some reason. They sell wine in mini bottles and if it doesn't come out of a gun, they don't sell it. Also in that night was Southall's biker society. Why am I here you ask? Apart from having little choice in the matter (demanding ex) I was told the curry was great. In fact I was told that the previous owners of what was The Glassy Junction by Southall Station were now set up here. So, we order the food. The Menu had a great variety and was very very reasonably priced for the area. Lots of veggie options clearly displayed under 'non meat'. The barman who was new had no clue how to use the till to order food and so the farce continued. It may have taken half an hour for him to take our money and another 50 mins for our food to come out. However - (big however) when the food came out, it was pretty amazing. Moorish and full of flavor. Generous portions, cheap prices and absolutely beautiful grub. The veggie curry was so yummy and the Dhal was the best I've ever had. Smooth and creamy in texture. The Baji's were not grease, but perfectly cooked and seasoned. The entire experience was so awful and surprising at the same time. I'm torn. Do I give one star or 5? One star for just how awful the place really is, or 5 for the hilarity and beautiful food?
