Why do I like Sunset Mesa? Mainly, unlike other preschools in the area, Sunset Mesa tries hard to be an actual school. Instead of me paying to have someone keep my daughter distracted with Sesame Street and sugary drinks, they try hard to teach her something. Since starting at Sunset, I've noticed that both her reading level and math skills have improved dramatically. My daughter also really enjoys the other students since the teachers keep fighting and bullying out of the classroom. The childrens' parent seen to be mostly Sandia employees or military. Also, a child has to be at least two and potty trained before the school will admit him or her. The price is steep compared to other places in Albuquerque. To me, the place is worth the money. Preschool is definitely somewhere a person gets what they pay for.

At the previous school my child was hit by a teacher and we created an investigation. So I wanted my child to be in an educational system in which I could have access to video monitoring services and one that held teachers accountable. So I as any parents of a little one I was skeptical of every place that I went to observe and I ended liking kiddie academy because of their philosophy, rules, and how they hold teachers accountable. My child has a few couples of days getting used to his new school and he did bite a child one day and got suspended. However in no time he learned to get a long with the rest of the children and be friends with children. I saw my child grow as the little butterfly he is and be confident in his social skills and educational journey. He was able to graduate from pre-K with his peers and do the summer program as well. He loved it so much that me that he is in kinder he tells me he misses Kiddie academy friends and teachers. The team is amazing and wonderful and I will forever be grateful they took care of my little one as one of theirs.

The management had an attitude of "kids will be kids" and not an attitude of how to make sure he and the other children were not bitten. One or two bites may be a toddler behavior but not 32. Each time myself or another parent shared a poor experience on there, the replies came across as cold, generic, defensive, and frankly gaslighting, lacking any genuine empathy or understanding. Unfortunately, my in-person experience matched that tone exactly. The atmosphere earns a 1/5 at best. The building feels far more like a sterile clinic or office than a warm, inviting elementary school or preschool. The outdoor play area is extremely small and limited, with very little equipment for the children. Even small details like Christmas stockings with typed and stapled staff names suggesting high turnover, and awards displayed on the walls that are all several years outdated gave the impression that things have declined and aren't improving. Those old awards seem to be up there for a reason: nothing recent to replace them with. The staff interaction was the worst part, warranting a 0/5. I found them consistently rude, condescending, and disingenuous. They gossip openly about the director and each other in front of kids and parents. If your child is remotely unsettled, you're called to do an early pickup. Staff do not seem to enjoy their jobs, and it shows. You'd see kids walk out from the day with mucus dried and crusted from never being cleaned during the day. During a visit, I observed teachers chatting among themselves for several minutes while a young child slid down the slide and hit their head at the bottom and only got attention once he started crying. My own kid was injured quite badly by the teacher which is why we disenrolled immediately. My kid used to HATE it here, cried every day about having to go, and wow I can't imagine why. What struck me was how indifferent the staff seemed toward families leaving. When we decided to withdraw, there was no curiosity about why, no attempt to understand our concerns, and certainly no effort to retain us. It genuinely felt like it didn't matter to them whether we stayed or left. That complete lack of care or investment in the families they serve spoke volumes. This similar observation was also echoed in another Google review that's also now gone. Practical issues only made things worse - parking is severely limited, turning drop off and pick up into chaos with constant car horns and aggressive maneuvering. The overall operation felt disorganized and unwelcoming from the moment I arrived. I'm genuinely baffled that this place had a waitlist. We quickly found a much better option just down the road- one that actually feels like a school, with engaging play spaces and genuinely kind, warm staff. My kid LOVES the new school and is thriving there. I'm just sad that this was our first experience in a learning environment when there are clearly MUCH better options. I didn't even get into everything like the complete and utter lack of communication. Even for free, I wouldn't consider it worth the time or stress. Save yourself the disappointment and look elsewhere.

They implied that something is wrong with our baby and maybe he will need special care/attention. One of them said she "has not seen a baby who has so much social anxiety in her whole career". The school is located past the Coronado Mall in a beautifully kept church. The church is clean and the classrooms are medium-large and welcoming with cubbies and wonderful activity centers as well as toys. The bulletin boards and walls are kept neat with projects posted and daily and weekly activity records listed. School starts promptly and ends promptly; the school does offer before and after care, and if a child needs either care once in a while and there is room, the school allows it and the care is rather inexpensive. School starts at 9:30 p.m. and ends at 1:00 p.m. It is a nut-free school and lunches must be packed. Snacks are brought in by the parents and rotated depending on the teacher. Our teacher had us rotate by week and I enjoyed trying out new healthy recipes on the kids who, for the most part, seemed to enjoy them. The curriculum for the three year old class was outstanding. Although my daughter did not come home with papers everyday, thankfully, she always told me about what she learned and how much she loved school. At this age, a lot of the teaching involves play, but St. John's also included the whole alphabet in the curriculum and thoroughly went through it. I was also impressed that they involved the kids in the 2008 presidential election process. My daughter's teacher was very experienced and I felt that she gave my daughter great attention. The teacher-to-student ratio is also quite low which helps as well. As a Christian institution, it also supplied the Christian values we wanted our daughter to learn about even though I and some other families who attended were not Christian. Keep in mind when factoring in price into education that St. John's has ASCI accreditation and although it may at first seem costly, it is well worth it. The current preschool in Ohio, where my youngest daughter is attending and my eldest attended, costs about the same and is on par with educational value.

If you are at all affiliated with the University of New Mexico, (and I have a friend who audits one…read moreonline course a semester just to gain access to this place) this is a facility that is unlikely to be matched for a couple reasons. First of all, they have an unfair advantage in facilities. There's not a lot of day cares that can afford such an institution with about 9 age-segregated buildings a giant court yard, 6 age-segregated playgrounds, and a full office staff without state subsidies and student fee. So take advantage. There is a primary teacher and about two assistant teachers per room and the kid to teacher ratio is well below state standards. The facility is very organized and they have a long term development plan which goes from infancy through the Pre-K program (which thankfully got some of it's funding cuts returned.) Kids leave this place with extremely good communication skills and are able to verbally resolve conflicts and express feelings and needs maturely by the age of four. They also seem to be very well prepared academically for public kindergarten. The prices are on the high side of moderate but not out of the vicinity of other top daycares around town especially with the student discount. There is a significant waiting list of about 6-12 months so I recommend putting your new-born on this waiting list and several others even if you don't intend to start daycare for another year or so. My five year old started here when she was about 1 and a half on a drop in schedule and moved into a half day by two and eventually a full day. She always had a good time and never once complained about not liking it there. She had several wonderful teachers that still know her and me by name. They still offer before and after school care for kindergarten but we've decided to try other places. My two year old went there for about a year and loves her teacher and I think the feeling is mutual.

It's wonderful that both kids are encouraged to interact with God on a personal level every day. They are asked to memorize scripture and pray regularly. Eastern Hills Christian Academy is an amazing place where my children are safe. They are learning every day and are being taught by people who want the same things for my children that I do. I never doubt that the people who work there love their jobs.
