Fear this no more though, as Edinburgh City Private Hire are here, like a superhero arriving to save the day...in a cab. They have cheaper rates than both City Cabs and Central Taxis by quite a bit, and although most cab journeys in Edinburgh don't last very long, if you are heading out of town they save you a fair amount. As well as this they actually turn up when they say they will, whether you want them in half an hour, or more impressively if you say you want one right away, they are always there within 5 minutes. The cabbies are all pretty cool from my experience as well, having a bit of a chat with you. Also all the cabs are good cars, a few mercs and audis and the like being used. The system for getting one of these taxis is pretty much the same as in London, Edinburgh, or any other city that boasts hackney cabs. 1. Decide whether you want to go to a taxi rank or just cross your fingers and wait at the side of a road. Taxi ranks are more reliable but have bigger queues. The choice is yours. 2. If you decide to try and flag down a taxi, stand on the street and look for a cab with it's orange light on (if the light's on it means it's for hire, and if the light's off it means somebody else has already beaten you to it). When you see one, wave madly at it until it pulls over to you. If it doesn't pull over, which is fairly likely, then repeat this process until one does stop. 3. Get in to the cab and tell the driver where you want to go. If you (shock horror!) have an English accent, they will probably pretend that they don't understand you. Don't let this put you off. 4. Watch the meter anxiously until you reached your desired destination. Once you get there, they'll probably expect you to tip - but don't feel that you have to. A lot of the drivers are pretty grumpy, and I tend to go by the rule that you should only tip people who have made an extra effort. Aside from the grumpy drivers, though, you will sometimes find some great characters driving Glasgow taxis. A couple of my favourites include the driver who said he would give us £5 if we could tell him why the taxis have a door on both sides and the driver who tried to read our minds. My least favourite was the driver who nearly got us killed in an incident with a double decker bus. Hey, you win some, you lose some.

The Cal Mac ferries are great for getting around Scotland, as they keep the mainland connected with…read morethe islands and more remote places in Argyll and the like. They service the west coast and like clockwork there are certain routes situated in certain places. In Largs, the Cal Mac ferry will take you to Cumbrae. It's a short trip, and so is unlikely to make you seasick. For tourists, Cumbrae is small but a must see as you get a great alternative view of the west coast from its shoreline and it is a great place to cycle round because of its compact attributes. It's a good idea for a day trip if you're staying in Largs for a few days and fancy doing something different. I would recommend ticking Millport off the list as even though it's small it's pretty and quaint, with lots of great wee tea rooms. When the Cal Mac ferry takes you to Cumbrae for under a fiver return as a foot passenger, it's on the list for something you should do while in Largs. Blink and you'll miss the ferry ride but it's always fun to savour the time you get on deck as the views in this region, even on a rainy day, are something else.

I was a lonely, innocent girl stranded in a far, far away land. Still, where exactly this land was, remains to be confirmed... Said, young, lonely girl was not feeling too bright. It's thought that somewhere along the way from getting wined and dined she had been attacked in the form of tequila and Jager bombs. As awful as this was, the story gets worse - intake of breath please. I WOKE UP in a strange land, jumped off of a moving bus (once it had stopped moving) and fell upon the kindness of a Great Western Taxi driver. A tiny fortune later (for this land was further away than you could image), I was tucked up in bed hiding my face in shame. The moral of the story is: do not drink that much and do not fall asleep on the night bus home. However, IF you do, you'd better hope one of these beauties happens to be passing by and rescue you.

If you're in the city centre and are looking to be picked up, however, they're not quite so excellent. When it's busy, in particular, they can leave you hanging for quite some time. Be prepared to call back at regular intervals to make sure they've sent a car for you, and suck it up! A friend of mine has this problem pretty often and has been stuck in the cold waiting for an hour and a half at times. Once I was with her - and once was enough for me! Overall, a good service in the local area. Further afield and when it's busy, though, altogether less dependable.
