Stage looked like that of an old theatre but had an ugly metal barrier that felt very out of place at a seated venue. Box office people were really mean and made fun of my poor Italian grammar. The gig I saw here was fantastic and had great energy, which made up for the venue being less than lovely. Located near the main square (Plebiscito), which is also convenient, because by the end of a concert here you will be so overheated/dehydrated that you'll want to dump an Italian ice on your face.

Excellent speaker placement, both aurally and visually. Everyone standing at the front of the stage had a great view. Most of the staff I interacted with here were pretty nice, especially the older guy at the cash register downstairs. And here's what I didn't like... Bad air conditioning. It was uncomfortably hot in the audience, even in the front row... I imagine it was much worse for people deeper in the crowd, surrounded by the body heat of other audience-members. And they don't take credit card... Or at least they weren't last night. The whole system to buy drinks was annoying to me... Go to the basement... Go to a cashier... Buy a ticket... Bring the ticket to the bar. But the cashier was really nice.

In Ravello, there are two better-known villas touting scenic eye candy worth checking out (with many other more or lesser known viewpoints)--Villa Cimbrione and Villa Rufolo. The latter takes its name from the wealthy merchant family that built this domicile in the 13th century. In the 14th century, banquets were hosted here for King Robert II of Naples and other Norman royalty. It was even written up in a story by Italian Renaissance author Boccaccio in "Decameron," published in 1353. In 1851, Sir Francis Neville Reid, a Scottish botanist and philanthropist, visited the villa in a state of deterioration and neglect, purchased it and renovated what was remaining of the property and gardens. Famously German composer Richard Wagner visited in 1880 and was so inspired he remained in Ravello to complete the second act of "Parsifal," an opera that had been in work for two decades. Today this villa is a historic landmark and cultural center, hosting musical concerts, open to the public for €8 regular admission, €6 discounted, tickets available at the entrance. There is a Moorish-inspired smaller tower and a taller bell tower from which you can climb to the roof to take in the views from behind a glass barrier.* The staircase inside this bell tower stands out in its criss-crossing design for stairs going up and down--reminiscent of MC Escher's lithographs showing impossible perspectives. From terraces and gardens outdoors behind the villa you can also catch sight of the hillside and coastline. While I was there in April, the gardens were in transition, they had various signs posted that apologized for the bare appearance due to recent storms. To me they still looked nice and I appreciated that they were so conscientious with upkeep! Wandering around you can spend anywhere from 30 min to 1.5 hours here. It's conveniently located next to the main town piazza and close walking distance to local restaurants and businesses. Thankfully, it's a very easy stop to get to. From the bus/shuttle drop-off point, it's only a short walk. Located high above the Amalfi Coast, Villa Rufolo dates back to the 13th century and was built by the wealthy Rufolo family, one of Ravello's most influential families at the time. Today, it's one of Ravello's most popular attractions, largely because of that incredible combination of history, architecture, gardens and the incredible views. The villa sits high in the mountains overlooking the Amalfi Coast, and there are so many different vantage points throughout the property where you can stop and take in the scenery. There are so many postcard-worthy views of the coastline, mountains and sea below. I will say, I was expecting a little more in terms of flowers and blooms. I'm not sure if it was because we were visiting at the beginning of summer, but the gardens weren't quite as lush and colorful as I had imagined. There was also some construction happening of a stage during our visit that unfortunately obstructed the main viewpoint I had really been looking forward to seeing. I thought it was pretty unsightly and took away from the experience, but construction happens--and there's always *something* being worked. I also took a quick peek inside the villa itself. From what I was able to see, it was lovely, and you can step out onto the balcony that overlooks some of the gardens. Overall, Villa Rufolo is a relatively quick and easy visit, which makes it especially worthwhile if you're short on time in Ravello. I'm glad we made it here. The views alone are worth the stop, and the setting is truly spectacular.

What can I say... RAVELLO! You were a dreammmm..... I only…read morewish I was there longer, a full day or even a few days. Ravello, being set high up the cliffside above Atrani and Amalfi, is sufficiently populated with historic/cultural sites, parks and trails, local businesses and restaurants to have some relaxing activities to partake in if you choose. Yet it's set apart from the larger towns along the coast with a more serene atmosphere suitable for resting and recharging. Being there in April during shoulder season, I wonder if I'd say the same during peak tourist season though...with how crowded most other towns already were in April, I have a feeling Ravello would be impacted similarly during the summer months. Reaching the town by local guide with transit or bus is optimal. The narrow, winding roads leading up to it are not for the faint of heart, and much of the town center is pedestrian only, so you'll need to find parking, then walk by foot on the medieval stone streets anyways. I read online that public buses were small vans, which doesn't seem to be the case anymore as of April 2026--they are full-sized public buses seating about 25 and fitting about 45 including standing room. There are also private "buses"available that are large vans that seat 10-12; inquire about these in the larger towns. Always book a round trip ticket bc it's not necessarily easy to find a shop selling bus tickets in Ravello. Sweeping, dramatic views, a connection to Richard Wagner, and a centuries of history (founded in the 5th Century, reaching peak economic and political prosperity in the 11-12th century) draw musicians, writers and artists. Some of the famous names who were inspired here were: Italian Renaissance author Giovanni Boccaccio, Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg, mathematically inspired artist M. C. Escher, British novelist Virginia Woolf, silent actress Greta Garbo, American writer Gore Vidal, Novel Prize in Literature winner André Gide, Spanish 20th century painter and sculptor Joan Miró, American author and screenwriter Truman Capote, and the list goes on. Notably each summer since 1953 the Ravello Festival is held in honor of Richard Wagner, though has expanded in scope to include orchestral performances, chamber music, jazz, art and photography exhibitions, dance shows, speaker sessions, discussion groups and artist meet-and-greets.
