This review is long overdue. I found Ms. Amanda via Yelp after looking for a qualified esthetician/waxer in the LA area circa 2014. I was impressed by her promptness, professionalism and most importantly her warmth. As a black woman, my skin has different needs so I had a lot of questions for her. She was knowledgeable and totally understanding of my concerns. I felt welcomed and comfortable each time and never felt rushed. It has been six years since our paths crossed and she has seen me through weddings, babies, and the trials of motherhood. She is a wonderful person with a heart of gold. I recommend her without hesitation to anyone who is looking for a top notch esthetician. read more

I've been waxed, prodded and poked at by a slew of practitioners in the Los Angeles area and they've all been fine. But then it was suggested that I check out this gal with pink eyebrows and a wit that's quicker than mine, and after just 5 minutes of introductory, "Yo, here's my philosophy for skin care and de-hairing sensitive spots" talk I knew Amanda would be my "girl" from now on. She's fixed my face a handful of times and now does it every three weeks or so. She does only what she feels is necessary to make my skin stop looking like a disaster zone, and if there's a little extra she thinks I would benefit from, she just does it. Never does she end the session with, "Well I didn't ask you permission at the time but I put ground diamonds in your pores to brighten your complexion. And it's an extra $75. You don't mind, right?" And all of her products are holistic and non-abrasive (unless they're supposed to be) and she approaches skincare and hair removal with a "less is more" ideal, which means she isn't going to give you an acid peel and pick at your face just for the sake of doing it. She's a fast waxer, the wax is always at a comfortable temperature, and she chit chats and makes you laugh while she strips it away so you're distracted and entertained. I leave knowing I'm paying for only what I asked for, and if I'm requesting something more than she feels I need she'll honestly tell me before she gets started, which makes me feel more confident and usually saves me some cash. Cuz when you're getting your vag waxed or your pores unclogged the No. 1 thing you need - besides Advil - is trust in your aesthetician. And I've got that with Amanda! I'll admit that I tried Amanda Hyde due to the Yelp Reviews about her and because of her fabulous pink eyebrows. She is a lovely, bubbly young woman with a personality to match those eyebrows (that are really very pretty on her). She is also no-nonsense, straight to it, but warm warm warm. She hugged me before I left. Being a southerner, and a hugger, this was an unexpected but appreciated touch. She's like your new best friend who just happens to know skin...really, really well. As for the chemical peel I got (first one ever) - wow! My skin really did look amazing ten minutes after having it and, since Friday (when I had it done), it just looks brighter and better every day! I had to come on here to make sure you're all aware that this lady is the best! Since Amanda has been my facialist (the last couple years), I find that I don't spend hours in the mirror wondering why my pores seem to be the largest in the universe. She treats my sensitive, fair complexion with such a gentle hand. You know when you go to get a new haircut and you tell the guy, "I want something easy, that will just dry and look good all day?" Amanda has this way of doing that with your skin! You go to her and all of a sudden you're not spending half the day covering up imperfections and washing your face with 10 cleansers and 5 different toners every morning/night. She's also the quintessential esthetician/therapist. Whether it be a hormonal zit the size of Uranus directly in the center of my forehead, or boy problems, she always knows exactly what to say (or not to say) and how to get you out of there with a smile on your face and a case of the giggles. You almost want to compensate her separately just for the laughs. And it doesn't end there. Being of strong eastern euro descent, I grow some serious hair. That, mixed with my sensitive skin had me terrified at the thought of being waxed. So I never did, until Amanda talked me into it. She is so fast and really knows how to keep it painless. You probably think, how would I know since I have no one to compare her to. But unfortunately, after being waxed by Amanda and it not being so bad I decided to have it done again while back up north at school by someone else. Needless to say, I scared away all this other persons costumers with my gut wrenching screams. It hurt like hell!!! So that's why I say Amanda is the best! It's always a pleasure to come in to see her. She's as fun, loud and rambunctious as she is soothing and comforting. None of that snooty, pretentious, "we're trying to make you feel as comfortable as possible while really making you feel like you're not welcome and we're totally judging you" thing you get at most spas. I've been going to that other waxing place on Ventura in Sherman Oaks for almost 2 years. However, after waiting for almost 45 min to get waxed, the owner running late and never calling me to say she was, I was like this is my last straw! Amanda is the best at what she does because she's been doing it forever and she cares about her clients. For waxing: I ONLY wax when it comes to my bikini area. I have been going to Amanda for about five years. I have tried other estheticians when I was away at school, and I found that I was miserable with those results. Amanda uses organic wax that is gentler on sensitive skin. That means no redness, irritation, in-growns, nothing. Just a perfectly smooth and gentle wax. And she is QUICK. I loved how good looking and easy to navigate her website is. I was able to book something pretty easily, and decided to treat myself, so I got one of her full treatments.... WOW WOW WOW! She calls it her WORKOUT facial, and it was amazing. She massaged and used these different tools to push the fluids out of my face, and completely changed how my whole face looked and felt. She showed me my face in a mirror halfway through, and the half she had worked on was visibly less puffy... I looked so different, so much better! It was an instant sculpting that actually lasted a couple of weeks. Absolutely the best eyebrow shaping around!! After becoming unhappy with the place I was going to I tried a few other places through groupon type deals and was continually unhappy. So I finally decided to do a yelp search and found Amanda had the best reviews (and pink eyebrows!) so I decided to give her a try. I've been going to Amanda for almost a year now and I've never been disappointed. My eyebrows always look amazing after my visits and I actually get complimented on them. Aside from just giving a great wax she is also one of the coolest most down to earth people. She always remembers who you are and what you talk about. Getting waxed is a VERY personal experience. So is getting a facial. Why? Because the esthetician gets in your personal space. For me, it's awkward because you can't really talk the awkwardness away. Needless to say, I've had awkward & painful waxes before & paid a lot more for those services. Enter Amanda, the speed goddess of waxing. She waxes (I won't say where) so fast that once it's over, I wonder if I was really in that studio or if it was just a dream. While she waxes, she can converse about ANYTHING & make you laugh. Heck, try broaching random topics such as space monkeys & I guarantee you, she'll roll w/ it. All estheticians have their own unique style of approaching facials. Some are more clinical than others. Amanda's facials are the mood rings of facials. What I mean by that is that I tell her my needs: "I have an event tommorrow" or "I have down-time to heal- I just want to look AMAZING after I'm done healing so I need long-term benefits" *cough, Mangobrite resurfacer* & how much time you have. Amanda takes care of everything else. Each time, I've had a different facial depending on my needs at that time. And that's comforting. It's comforting that there's no brainwork needed in addition to all the various family & work obligations. She also has her own brand of products. I've gotten her "Organic Anti-Aging Eye Makeup Remover" which smells like a garden in a bottle & removes my eye makeup. Heck, I'd use it on myself even if I had no eye make-up on. THAT'S how good it smells : ) P.S. I was someone who doubted the importance of good facial skin care. I was so lazy! I'd buy a cheap face wash at the grocery store, use it irregularly, and then wonder why my face was always breaking out... but then a friend told me to go see Amanda at Amanda Hyde Skin in West Hollywood. This was my first experience with a aesthetician, or with any sort of professional skin care at all... and Amanda has made me a believer in the power of proper skin care! I feel amazing, and my skin has never looked better. It was super easy to book online through her website, and I felt the prices were very reasonable... however, after how I feel now, I'd have paid double! I've had terrible skin my whole life, and now I finally get to look in the mirror and see the "me" I always knew was buried under the blemishes. I went in recently because I read the reviews but I wasn't impressed. The facial was basic, nothing special and the place is located inside a chain of other small businesses. The worst part is that I could smell all the chemicals from the hair stylists next door. It gave me a HEADACHE. Then on top of that the LOUD talking and their music they had. I've visited Amanda for facials and a brow wax. I struggled with my skin after moving here from a very, very different climate. It turns out I was doing it all wrong. Go figure. Amanda asked a lot of questions and listened closely. She took her time and took great care. My skin was significantly better after she worked on it. She gave me product recommendations (and generous samples) and when I actually follow her recommendations (most of the time! I swear!) my skin is soft and smooth and even a little glowy. My former waxer always had to do a good bit of plucking to clean up my brows after waxing, but Amanda did my brows in about three seconds flat, and they were perfect. I scheduled an appt. for a chemical peel & a bikini wax. Once I arrived I was being talked into a mango peel, not at all what I wanted so it was a little frustrating. Once I explained that I had already tried regular peels for my hyperpigmentation, none of which worked, and that I had taken time off of work just to allow for peeling and healing from a chemical she obliged. Yay, finally! Amanda did a great job and even followed-up, which I truly appreciated! Unfortunately, one Jessner peel is not going to do the trick. Looks like I'll need multiple treatments or something else. Sigh. Onto the bikini wax. I let Amanda know it was my first BW, so I wasn't sure what to expect. I now know you can expect to be completely nude from your belly down. I wore a g-string thinking we would work around it but no such luck (haha)! Anywho, it was medium-to-mildly painful, but Amanda is quick so that helps. I would say my first experience went well with one big exception which I am still upset about, she shaped my hair-down-there the way she wanted it without asking me. Admittedly, I wouldn't be so upset if it was what I wanted but it's not! I am now dealing with the long awkward period of letting it grow back in.. the way I like it! Grooowl! The reason I am giving A.H.S. 3-stars is because I had to talk her into giving me what I requested, the prices on her auto-appointment booker were different than what I was billed (and not in my favor, but when I saw them I thought they were wrong anyway) and the big one, she shaped me down-there her way. I've had this location bookmarked for over a year and I am so disappointed that I waited so long to finally come in for an appointment. I booked a Brazilian wax and an underarm wax with Amanda and she was literally the best waxer I've ever had. That's saying a lot since I've been getting waxed for the last 12 years. Her skill is really next level and her wax is very high quality. The building her suite is located in has convenient underground validated parking. Her suite is very cute and was clean and organized. I most enjoy that she doesn't use the cheap paper sheets as a barrier between clients and uses cotton covers instead. As we wrapped up I saw her changing the sheet for her next client.
