They were about to short me $500 by not listing one of my children as a student. While there, I was asked what school my 21 year old child went to. I expressed I had never been asked that question and was deeply offended she ask such a question and I felt it was intrusive and I was uncomfortable answering the question. The tax preparer told me it was a mandatory question that it was a new policy the just took effect this year they HAD to have this information to complete my taxes. I provided my children's school information and watched her enter it into her computer. She came up with an amount of $900 something for my refund amount. I was adamant the amount was incorrect that I had $1400 something through TaxAct. I left the initial visit and returned about a week later. I spoke to the same lady and advised her through TaxAct I only enter an import code and the refund amount generates. Again, she told me I was wrong and the refund amount was $900 something. I asked her to be patient while I pulled up TaxAct to see where discrepancy was. As I was scrolling through my phone she asked was $1400 something the amount I came up with. I asked what she did to now have the correct amount. Initially she gave me a bogus excuse I honestly don't remember but I then said no you just did something to have the correct amount what did you just do? She did not have my 21 y/o listed as a student. After the entire conversation we had about how offended I was to be required to provide their schooling information and me watching her enter it int her computer she STILL did not list him as a full time student. I asked for someone else. I explained what happened and had I not known any better would have walked out $500 short on my return. I told her I was pretty good at doing my own taxes (as I don't have any property or assets) and I knew the amount she gave was incorrect. I was asked if I wanted a job since I did my own taxes so well. Because she had so called problems navigating through her computer she could not figure out how to submit my return saying they needed to call tech support. At that point I said never mind thank you but I did not feel comfortable with them processing my return and left. I reached out to H&R Block via Facebook who advised me it was not mandatory or a new policy to provide my children's school information. I am very upset...pissed for a lack of a better word at how I was treated at H&R Block.This happened at the H&R Block at Eastland Mall. I kept asking and asking over and over again, and was finally rudely pulled to the side by some woman who said "come here". Kathy was not in the office at that time, but this other woman said that Kathy had experienced a computer glitch and that everything was lost, also tried to play it off like there was a misunderstanding about the year of the taxes. She said that I would get a refund, but the work would be completely done. No one seemed to have a good answer on what actually happened, and I wonder if any personal information was lost.
