Her and her wonderful assistant were both so friendly and kept us at ease that even my camera shy husband was relaxed and comfortable! I've been following Amber's blog for a while and have been consistently impressed with the quality of her photography. My husband and I had considered asking her to shoot our wedding, but we had to scrap that plan when we moved away from DC - which is too bad, because she really does excellent work. I was back in DC for a few days recently, and scheduled a boudoir session with Amber. I've lost some weight recently, and really liked the idea of documenting my new and improved figure with photos that I can use to embarrass my grandchildren. I thoroughly enjoyed the session - Amber was encouraging and professional, and really made me feel beautiful and comfortable. And the photos! They're gorgeous. The lighting is perfect. The editing is perfect. My skin is (or at least looks) perfect. I am 100% happy with them, and have shared them with as many of my friends as are willing to look - and c'mon people, we're not talking about NSFW content. We're talking about gorgeous, flattering, sexy photos that are less revealing than most high-fashion ads. This review barely scratches the surface of my happiness with Amber's work. We had Amber doing our wedding photos. We love the way they turned out. Neither my wife nor I tend to photograph well. We seem to make weird faces, stand in the wrong place, or otherwise find ways to screw up pictures of us. Somehow every photo Amber did turned out great. We booked Amber for a DC courthouse wedding and couldn't have been happier with our decision. She was very familiar with the surroundings and suggested some awesome outdoor and indoor locations to shoot pictures. We hired Amber to photograph our wedding in Washington, DC after we found here here on Yelp. She was great! We chose to get ready at our house with our wedding party and families, so Amber arrived just after lunch to document the event. She stayed with us throughout the afternoon, making sure to get lots of great candid shots of our family and friends. At Amber's suggestion, we decided to do a "first look" (where the groom sees the bride) outside our house before we went over to the venue, in order to give us more time to enjoy cocktail hour with our guests. We headed over to the venue early with our wedding party and families and Amber took some group shots before the ceremony. During the cocktail hour, we snuck away by ourselves with Amber for a few post-ceremony bride/groom photos. Amber was there throughout dinner and the reception and took fantastic photos that really captured the evening. Throughout the day and evening, Amber always seemed to be in the right place at the right time. We were thrilled when she sent us a preview of our photos a few weeks after the wedding -- an awesome mix of cool artsy shots with all the must-have photos of family, friends, etc. The best thing about Amber, besides delivering amazing photos, is that she is down-to-earth, not at all pretentious, and listened to what we wanted. I never felt like she was in the way or in our face at the wedding -- which is a huge pet peeve of ours with wedding photographers. Also, unlike many other photographers, she does not watermark the photos she delivers and she provides digital copies on a DVD for us to share with family and print as we please. She showed us a few samples of the wedding albums she makes. They are stunning. We plan to order one soon. Hiring Amber for our wedding was definitely money well-spent. read more

Amber is the best. When looking at portfolios online, my husband and I were both independently drawn to her style and uncanny ability to capture moments and emotions. More than just stylized shots of decorations and shoes and rings (though she's great at those!) Amber was able to capture the emotion and tone of our wedding day perfectly. The look on my husband's face when he's saying his vows, guests getting down and dirty dancing, quiet moments between the two of us surrounded by our friends and family, I get a smile every time I look through our album remembering how loving and fun the whole day was. A couple of months ago I turned the big 3-0 and wanted to have some fun pictures taken to commemorate the occasion. Now, I know Amber specializes in weddings, but I read her blog and am constantly impressed with how versatile she is as a photographer. Her pictures are always clean and crisp, with fantastic lighting, not to mention that she has a fun and creative way of planning her shots. So, I asked her to photograph my husband and me for my big birthday milestone. Unsurprisingly, the end product was fantastic! She is such an easy person to work with and I would hire her again in a heartbeat. I've been through my own wedding and have perused my fair share of wedding photographs, enough to know that there are some real dud photographers out there; Amber is NOT one of them. Amber Wilkie is fantastic. She photographed our wedding, and I have since continued to follow her photography on her website. The many, many pictures we received were wonderful, and I was thankful she caught all the events we discussed beforehand, as well as the spontaneous moments that could have never been planned like my 80-year old Grandmother dancing with a friend to Backstreet Boys. During the portrait session, she was even incredibly patient while my husband and I repeatedly laughed while trying to photograph a kiss or romantic look. I don't even know how many photos we destroyed by laughing right at the worst moment, but Amber just kept trying and never seemed impatient. She was very laid back and comfortable which is a nice break from the usual wedding stress. Amber's editing is also great. There was one photo we wanted, but we couldn't get people out of the background. No problem- Amber seamlessly removed the people from the background during post-production. We were amazed when we got it back; you never would have known there were people there in reality. We also got the photos back quickly which is always nice. From my experience and what I can tell from her website, it seems like she tries to send at least one photo to us expectant brides within a couple of days. It made me so happy on our honeymoon to see that first photo. And the rest came soon after. As I follow her on her website, I am repeatedly impressed. You can really tell from her blog how much she loves photography and the awe and respect she has for things we mere non-photographer mortals don't notice like light, color, and the mood of certain settings and venues. She has true vision for her sessions while still being flexible enough to listen to what the couple wants. I love how I never know what I'll see when I visit her website. You would think weddings and engagement photo sessions would be all pretty much the same, but every event I see is new and different; she really knows how to capture the exact mood and character of the people she's working with. My husband and I booked Amber to shoot our wedding after my mother-in-law showed us awesome photographs she took of another wedding that had been held at a summer camp. We were looking for someone who did lots of natural-looking shots, some quirky stuff, and most importantly, a photographer with a personality that would mix well with ours. Our fantastic experience began when she found time to take engagement photographs in New York City, where we were living while we planned our DC wedding. Since my husband and I are obsessive about food, we asked if she would photograph us preparing a meal at home in our apartment, and the entire session was awesome. Amber spent hours taking hundreds of gorgeous photographs. Each of them makes the two of us - and our dark, smallish, Upper East Side apartment - look absolutely gorgeous. Seriously, I have no idea how she managed to make a kitchen and dining area with no natural light look like it belongs in a magazine, but she did it! She was funny, easy to get along with, and answered my many questions with clarity and grace. On the day of our wedding, Amber spent lots of time in the hotel room with me, my mother, and my bridesmaids, taking lots of awesome getting ready shots. We took portraits at the National Gallery of Art, and although we picked out the location, we had no idea how to really take advantage of the space. Amber checked it out ahead of time and had plenty of excellent ideas for incorporating the art into our portraits. The photographs from the event itself (which was at Longview Gallery, and held entirely indoors because of the rain - basically, a huge challenge to photograph) are absolutely breathtaking. I agree with the other reviewers who say Amber is really fun to be around. She made me feel absolutely relaxed and comfortable, even when I was tired of people asking me to smile and taking my picture. I know I was in denial about it, but it's totally true that once it's all over, what you really have left is the photographs to look at. We were so lucky to find Amber, and I honestly cannot recommend her enough. I am keeping her number around in hopes of hiring her to photograph our next big family event. read more

Amber is a fantastic wedding photographer. She photographed our wedding (and also engagement pics) in October 2013. Not only are her photos classic and incredible (go look at her website, are the images not wonderful?), she is a great person to work with. She is a calming presence, she makes you laugh, she puts you at ease, she makes you look great, all seemingly effortlessly. She will also nerd out with you about Doctor Who, if you're into that kind of thing. The only thing that's cut through the happy glow that's persisted for weeks after my wedding is the fact that Amber is moving to Sweden, at least for a while; she was so wonderful that I wish she could photograph every major event for the rest of our lives. Amber shot both an engagement session and our wedding day for us, and throughout the process, she was wonderful about communicating, a relaxing presence even at moments when I was anxious for things to move forward or happen in a particular way, and she delivered gorgeous images to us at lightning speed. She shot us both in our home and in a Washington park for our engagement session, and really captured the essence of who we are, what our relationship is like, and the way we live in our neighborhood. She was thoughtful about what time of day the light would be best, what poses would make us both feel comfortable and like ourselves, and creative about using winter foliage and even some clever graffiti in our shots. For our wedding pictures, Amber and Tim, her second shooter, blended in seamlessly while my husband and I were getting ready, but also used the time to take beautiful pictures of things like our flowers. They shot beautiful, efficient portraits with our families before our ceremony. And the pictures she took of us and our families during the ceremony and reception that followed were, hands down, some of the best pictures that have been taken of all of us at any point in our entire lives. The hardest part has been picking which ones to print for our albums, mantlepieces, etc. Amber is a treasure. I just hope we can find a way to work with her again as we pass other milestones in the future. read more

Amber photographed our small wedding. So far three people have had tears in their eyes when I showed them the photos. In a good way! We're thrilled with the photos and I feel lucky to have found her. She was the first person we knew we wanted to hire for our wedding. Our experience with her was great. She strikes a great balance between being a professional who takes the job seriously but is also down to earth and fun. We really appreciated that she had her stuff in order pre-wedding. She let us know what was included, when we should expect to hear from her, what info she needed from us, etc. She was also very organized with our wedding information, was responsive to emails and did not ask the same questions multiple times (which happened more than I expected with other vendors and left us feeling nervous). Choosing Amber Wilkie Photography for our wedding and engagement photos was the best decision we made regarding our wedding. Amber is a truly gifted photographer and a pleasure to work with. My husband and I have nothing but glowing feedback regarding our experience with Amber. To give a bit of background and more info... my husband and I are not from the DC area. We searched for a photographer through friends and colleagues in the area, the internet, wedding sites, photography schools, etc. The other photographers we checked out either didn't exactly have the style we were looking for or were way too pricey. We were on a budget, but we definitely didn't want to compromise price for anything less than great photos. We met with Amber once before doing our engagement photos (which she included in the price of the wedding photos just so she could get a chance to know us before the wedding!). She was on-time, organized, and got the information she needed from us to know what styles we liked best and what we were looking to capture about ourselves in the photos. My husband (then fiance) and I had never had professional photos before, so we were unsure of how they would go. Amber made us feel so at ease and by the end of the session we were having so much fun we were reluctant to quit! Amber had a few photos ready for us to view by the next day and she had a CD in the mail to us very shortly thereafter so we were able to develop some photos to show off before the wedding. As a side note, I needed some extra help finding other vendors since were relatively new to the area. I asked Amber for some help and she was always quick to respond with contacts from her previous wedding shoots. At the wedding Amber was so prepared and since we had already met her twice before we were so comfortable with her. She was with us all day and captured every important moment and so many of the little moments in between that we didn't even realize were there until seeing the photos. I wanted to send out some photo card "thank you" notes to the guests after the wedding and Amber send me a few great photo options right away so I had something to work with. When she completed our photos, she emailed us a link to her website where we could view them and show all of our friends and family. Then, she sent us a flash drive with all the digital images for us to keep. We were totally blown away when we saw the photos. The way she captured the colors and the light was simply amazing. Amber's photographs are works of art. It's almost impossible to just pick out a few to develop for our wall, we are so happy with them all. We are so happy we hired Amber to take photos of our courthouse wedding and reception in D.C. She is very responsive to our need -- very professional, funny, and a fantastic photographer. While she is great at doing the typical composed photos that might go on your save the date card or on your mother's dresser, where she really shines is finding the unexpected pictures that all of your friends will think are the coolest pictures they have ever seen. During our engagement shoot, we were walking around DC, when she saw an alley that was getting fantastic light, and she said "quick, let's get some pics in there!"
