Due to circumstances beyond our control, we had to find a place, in a hurry, for our father and…read morethey were our only option at the time. The facilities nearby had no beds, so he was going to be over an hour away. We were so hopeful that he would get the care he needed. He had a fractured femur and a catheter. He was at Arden from 8/26 until we were able to get him out of there on 9/18. On my 1st visit there on 8/31, the overwhelming stench of urine was striking. His 1:1 caregiver (paid xtra) informed me that that there had been feces and blood all over the bathroom. When the staff was questioned, I was told that one of the other residents would sometimes wander into other people's rooms and defecate on the floor. Say what? Shouldn't someone be watching them? I asked to see the video footage from my father's room but was told it only records if there is a fall. Total bologna! One would think that it was cleaned up properly but upon my return on 9/5, there was still blood and feces smeared in the bathroom. I found my father in the "common area" with his pants removed and nurses doing an "assessment ". My father kept saying, "help, help, help" until my sister and I went to him and helped to redress him. Mind you, there were residents wandering around aimlessly. One resident was trying to pick up medicine (pill form) that was left on the floor. Thankfully, a nurse caught her before she actually picked it up, but not in a timely manner. Said resident also came over and ate food from my father's breakfast platter. At this time we asked if my father had been weighed. Nope. They went about the procedure to weigh him. He weighed 148lbs. As of 2 days after he was relocated to a much better facility near our home, he weighed 131lbs. I returned on 9/6 and found urine all over his floor because the nurse forgot to "lock" his catheter. No one bothered to clean it up but I did find a nurse to properly reattach his catheter. His 1:1 caregiver was the one who actually cleaned it up, along with the old food stuck to his wheelchair. On to neglect. I called every day to check on my father's condition. Most days I had to leave a message. Most calls were never returned or were returned to a family member who wasn't the one who called. At one point, when I actually got through to the nurses station, the nurse told me she would check and set the phone down instead of putting me on hold. I could hear her saying to someone that she needed info on my dad. On her way back to the phone I heard her saying, "I don't give a shit". She got on the line and said my dad was doing well. I said, " I certainly hope that you weren't saying you didn't give a shit about my father". She stammered and said it was about someone else. Those words shouldn't come out of a nurse's mouth under ANY circumstances! I called another day and was told that my father was doing great, eating and walking around. I asked, "He's walking around?" to which she replied, "yes". I said, "with a broken femur?" to which she responded that she had no idea he had a fractured femur and would notate it in his chart. My father had already been there for 2 weeks and it wasn't in his chart? He also received no PT while there. We had one heck of a time getting them to return calls from the facility to which we were trying to transfer him. Again, I had to call myself and insisted that they call them back and the nurse said she was unaware of any messages or emails to that effect. I could, and did, go on and on but I think you get the picture. PLEASE do not send your loved one to the facility! The care is abysmal and the place is a pigsty. I have to live with the guilt of having my father there for the limited time that he was. I don't want anyone else to have to live through that particular hell.

From the start, the…read moreadmissions office and staff were both responsive and thoughtful through each step of the entry process, and their professionalism and care were excellent. Since my mother's arrival, the level of support has been exemplary. She has been in her independent unit for over six months and continues to express her gratitude of being in such a personable and caring community. Each day she is establishing connections with both residents, and staff and I feel the value-centered community of "friendship, dignity, and respect" is truly woven into the fabric of this very special place. Our family, and most importantly my mother, couldn't be happier with her move to Foulkeways.

It has taken some time to process what we experienced at Gwynedd Estates while caring for our…read moremother after our father died in late 2020. Now that she is safely relocated to a high-quality assisted living facility, I feel I can document the take-always. Negatives: 1. This place has zero professional capacity to support people experiencing even minor memory issues; your loved one will be mistreated and disrespected by management. 2. The assigned medical doctor was out-of-touch and perfunctory, and appeared to be dispensing questionable medical advice. 3. The assisted living area where they "offered" to move Mom (literally minutes after Dad died) was sad and cramped--kind of like a day care dungeon. 4. The maintenance staff and "computer guy" would respond only after multiple phone calls over several days or weeks. 5. The nursing contractor tried her best. Unfortunately, she couldn't muster a consistent nursing staff. Nursing was wildly uneven, ranging from considerate to sketchy. 6. The management seemed focused on taking the big downpayment, offering minimal service and support, speculating about imaginary liability risks, and gaslighting vulnerable residents (and their kids) so they could turn over the "good real estate" to the next sucker as soon as possible. Overall, what struck us most was how much the people running the place showed almost no evidence of caring for older people or having done any actual homework into gerontology. It was a head-scratcher why most of the managers were even working there. Oh, and they were really sloppy; we kept finding out that they would make stuff up, promise to do things and not do them, and even lie about medical protocols and contractual matters, if it suited their purposes. Also, they seemed to really want to "hide" anyone who was experiencing, well, being old. It was bizarre. We'd get panicked calls that our mother was "spotted outside the dining hall." A quick check would reveal she was waiting to meet some "friends" who didn't want to walk over to get her and left her hanging. Rather than helping her, the management would call us and complain. Whatever! Positive notes: 1. The hair stylist was devoted to her clients. 2. The transportation team was very good. 3. The food was adequate, and the wait staff was high school kids who were mostly sweet. 4. The minister came through for our Dad's funeral. 5. The security folks working the gate were really nice. 6. There were a few active residents and volunteers who made things fun--like curating residents' artwork or organizing bridge or golf. 7. Several of the neighbors were quite kind, and they backed us up when management attempted to deny some minor service request, claiming the "residents' council" objected. We checked, and the leader of the council stepped up and corrected that nonsense. So it was a real mixed bag, but, unfortunately, it is the poor and dishonorable management that really spoiled the whole experience for us. But, hey, if you're into "fighting city hall" to get minimal service and you enjoy having to dog incompetent managers to do the job that your parents paid a chunk of their life savings for them to do, then this is your place! As for us, we took the financial hit to liberate our mom. We have since found an amazing place in another state. Very glad Acts is in the rear view mirror!
